Argh! Advice needed re: cd frig

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can share a good solution to my refrigerator selection problem. I had found the "perfect" solution, ordered it and am now told it's discontinued and no one can get it any more.

Here's what I'm looking for: a counterdepth, panel ready frig with NO dispenser in the door. The cabinet maker already built the cabinet for the Jennair JCB2282KTB I ordered. I had preferred a side by side (I have another bottom freezer frig for other food storage needs), but at this point would certainly consider french door style. Anyone have any ideas?

Alternatively, can I buy a frig with a dispenser & just cover it up with the panel?

Are you sure it's not available anymore? I did a google search and a bunch of online places claim to have it in stock - of course that doesn't mean they do.

It sounds like if you do go with a different fridge you'll have to have new panels made anyway. Why are you so against ice and water in the door? You might be able to panel over them but why - I find the ice in the door to be very useful.

Thanks Weissman. I called many of the online vendors who claim to have it in stock & was told that in fact they could no longer get it. I even called Jennair- the very helpful rep made a couple calls to local large vendors in my area hoping they would have some stockpiled somewhere. One told me they could definitely get it for me. I went in spent half the morning , gave my credit card & was assured they could get it. Then yesterday get a "tail between the legs" call saying they were wrong & can't get it.

My "issue" with the dispenser is two-fold, and honestly may be totally misplaced. If I'm crazy and it's a non-issue I'm happy to hear that. 1) Nearly all the models I have seen with dispenser, he dispenser is either black or white- neither would look great with my setup. I have only found one model, a Frigidaire, which has a stainless dispenser. All others have only black or white dispenser (which I don't like the look of). I worry about paying extra $ for panels for a Frigidaire when I'm not sure it has the longevity of the other brands. Care to weigh in on that aspect?. That leads to #2; 2) I'm afraid of investing the extra $ for custom panels and having the water from the dispenser leak, drip or otherwise damage the panels. Is this an unwarranted concern?; 3) I guess thee is a #3--I like the cleaner look of no dispenser on that side of the kitchen.

I found that Kitchenaid makes a new frenchdoor model with no dispenser that looks like it would do, but it's more than $1k more expensive and does not come with handles so that's additional expense on top. Trying to do this for less than $3-4K or the cost of a built-in.

We've had a bottom freezer, standard-depth, refrigerator for a number of years now, and my husband hates it! He has dug in his heels about the frig for the new house we're building--now at framing stage. We do not want to spend the bucks for a built-in, so I had my builder recess the wall where the frig will be. Doing so was easy; it just meant eliminating some but not all the bookshelves on the other side of the wall in the hall between our kitchen and din rm. I do not like side by sides because of the narrow shelves. I personally love the French Door frigs, but DH says "NO"! again b/c of the freezer being on the bottom. So what I'm looking for it just a regular frig, freezer on top. Of course I want it to be energy efficient, and it could be as wide as 36". Stainless would look best with my white painted cabinets, but panels are also an option, I suppose. My builder said the cabinet guy will build a surround cabinet to enclose it, and I've read all the forums RE doing this (making sure to allow space at sides and back for venting, etc.) But what I need is advice about which brand of "ordinary" and "old fashioned" frig with freezer on top some of you have had good experience with. AND do all frig makers offer panels??? Thanks for any help!

Red_lover, Those look like brass with a patina, where the patina has shined up (rubbed away) from handling. You might be able to restore them, if you still like them. Patina kits are available at art and paint stores. You might also be able to use an actual paint product just on the rubbed areas, so that it'll take longer to shine away. It won't look as good, and might feel odd, but it'll be something adhered to the surface, rather than a chemical change to the surface itself. (In the olden days grand people employed large staffs to rub all the brass and keep it shiny, instead of that dark patina you chose on purpose. :) ) If you're going to replace them, you'll need to find pulls with the exact same size from center to center where the screws are. Then the panels need to be removed to get at the screws and then replaced. If you don't have your installation manual, it should be available online. It can be done by any skilled installer or carpenter.

Hi All! If any one of you die hards is still interested in this thread, I've put a couple of coats on the back of my cabinet with the color I chose for the outside of the cabinets, Simply White (BM Aura). I also went on a field trip to Ikea to pick up a couple of things, and I ran across some very pretty Duck Egg Blue dishes, one of my other very favorite blues. I picked up a bowl and a dish, just to see how the color looked. I love it. DH would still like me to try a gray, but as I said, he's coming with me. I don't think I could face it alone. In the meantime, I am going to keep my eye open for two Duck-Egg-Blue serving pieces - I think that this will tie in nicely with the blue in the tile, (the duck egg is more bluish than gray - Ikea calls it turquoise, but I don't think it is quite so bright). Funny thinking that a serving piece can help to tie in colors. Now if I can just get the walls right! Smiles, Hestia ps, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Sorry you couldn't find the model you wanted. Personally, I'm more into function than form so I would recommend buying a fridge for it's features and reliability, not appearance. Also, I personally don't care for panelled appliances - I like a fridge to look like a fridge, a DW to look like a DW, etc. I don't really know much about Frigidaire reliability so I can't advise you on that. KA on the other hand makes very good fridges with good warranties (at least they used to). I've had mine for six years without any problems - and my older Whirlpool is still going strong in the garage after 27 years.

GE makes several CD models with stainless dispensers. I don't have the spec book in front of me now, but I think there is a SxS that is panelable and doesn't have a dispenser. I'll check when I get to work.

By the way, to answer your other question, I do occasionally get a drip down the front of my SS door but I wipe it up right away. I would imagine if you did the same with a wood-paneled door, you wouldn't have any problems.
