A hawk tried to grab my dog.

Earlier this morning I took my toy yorkie outside, he's just about 4lbs, and right before my eyes, a hawk swooped down from over top of the house and went after him. I couldn't see the dog because the hawk was so large. Luckily, after screaming and waving my arms, the bird flew up again, and I could see my yorkie hunkered down, terrified. How can I get rid of this hawk, I can't take the dog outside without the hawk circling him, but he never tried to catch him until today. I need help, someone please tell me what to do.

All raptors are protected, so there really isn't much you can do to get "rid of it". You may just have to resort to going outside with your little pooch while he does his business to make sure the hawk doesn't try it again. Also, be careful at night. If you have Great-horned Owls around, a Yorkie would be easy prey for these birds too.

Leave the hawk alone. Get a bigger dog!

Birdsong: I can certainly understand why you feel the way you do. In fact, I agree with your views 100%. I am saddened that we are all in the position of losing our tempers because this issue is so near and dear to our hearts, and we always feel that we are losing the battle (especially when facing the approaching season of Chemlawn ads). I think I pointed out to Dil in one post why we all feel as strongly as we do: . . . I have often seen posts on this board seeking information on how to lure and feed deer, raccoons, etc. only to later see the same people here seeking a solution when the natural reaction has created a nuisance. . . . so you can see why people develop strong opinions about this issue. However, after spending a couple of years reading, I believe that we all have a unique opportunity here. This kind of board gives us the opportunity to debate these ideas online for many people to read. I like to think that there are other people out there, like Dil (and probably each one of us at one time or another), who are similarly fertile ground. I think that when we do lose our tempers and get sharper than we want to, our argument loses power. I'm as guilty as anyone of losing my temper in this thread, but the amazing thing about Dil is that he hung in there. I personally think that takes a pretty big person . . . not to mention that Dil has promised to try to explain his new understanding to his neighbors. He won't win them all over, but he may convince a few. What more can we ask for? Afterall, what we are asking for is a paradigm shift. Our culture values making money and personal enjoyment above and beyond all else. So, we are asking for deeply-rooted cultural ideals to change. That won't happen overnight. Maybe I'm being way too optimistic, but I think if people did understand the common sense of it, some of them wouldn't do the things they do. The only way to hope to change people's opinions is to debate them respectfully. So, while I understand where your anger comes from, I hope you will rethink your approach. You obviously understand the issue clearly and have some valuable insight to add.

I own a small yorkie poo and and when I met a guy this summer when we were camping, he told me his sister used to own one that looked like her. She was mowing her lawn and her dog was at the other side of her lawn. She said a hawk (I'm wondering if it may have been a golden eagle?) came down, grabbed him in his talons and carried her dog away. She never saw her dear pooch again. My small dogs never go outside alone. I stand right beside them and always have a shovel or rake nearby. I worry more about nasty dogs coming around since they aren't afraid of humans, but whatever tries to take my dogs will have an indent from my shovel if they ever try.

Caitlyn ... Can you get extra credit in biology class for writing a report on the hawk behavior? Have a friend hang back and take pictures for the report. Video it for YouTube! Seriously, for a couple of weeks more you may need to wear a bike helmet because they are very protective until the chicks a. Or walk under an open umbrella.

I feel your pain!! I had an Afghan Hound that ate every thing! I had roasted a whole chicken with potatoes and carrots in one of those cook in bags, we ate the chicken and stuff but the carcass was still in the bag on the counter to be put in the trash, quick as a blink he jumped up grabbed it off the counter and snuck off with it. He ate the entire thing! bag, chicken carcass and all. All in one gulp it seemed. Well we were very worried and followed him around and lo and behold a couple days later he was out in the yard trying to do his business and have a bit of a problem. My husband had to put on some plastic gloves and lend assistance!! It was the entire bag still in one piece. No sign of the chicken LOL I had one of my Great Danes that would eat the rocks that were below the bbq grill where the grease would drip down on them, no matter how much we tried to cover that up she dug till she got those rocks and ate them. Never a problem she would pass them. That same Afghan hound had got loose from the original owner and gone trash can hopping, had apparently eaten a large wad of aluminum foil. Well that was a problem because it will not pass and will not deteriorate quickly. In fact this is how I became the owner of that dog, my vet called me and asked if I could take it on that the current owner traveled and just could not deal with the dog. I said sure. We ended up having to give him special digestive enzyme pills to help break down the foil, his other bad habit was drinking toilet water and I had the blue cleaner stuff in my toilets, well that nearly killed him, it ate holes in his stomach. I had no idea he was drinking in there. But to this day I will never put anything in my toilets again I had no idea that stuff was so dangerous Long story short he lived to be a very old dog and ate many more things in his long life including an entire Christmas ham and an entire Christmas Turtle Cheesecake! and a shoe or 2. And survived testicular cancer and the removal of um them. I hope that makes you feel a little better and know I am praying for you and your dog!!

This is one of the disadvantages of having 4 lb dogs. Don't even think about harming the hawk - that's the wrong way to tackle the issue. I'm sorry but the best solution would be to accompany your dog closely at all times on a short leash. Perhaps get a bigger dog to give him company.

Walk the dog on a leash every time. Don't leave it outside alone or the bird will take it. That's all you can do. Getting a bigger dog won't protect the little dog. Let them separate for one moment and the little dog will be taken despite the big dog being nearby.

moddyzgirl: If it were me, I'd get a New Year's Eve noisemaker of some kind; a horn, or one of those things you crank, that makes a bunch of noise, and carry it with me.

Keep your Yorkie on a short leash, and if the Hawk is bold enough to STILL swoop on it, make a bunch of racket with your noisemaker. Should freak the Hawk into avoiding you and your Yorkie.

I think the law allows for a person to protect himself and his property if it is being threatened with harm.

I would think only a Golden Eagle, Bald Eagle or a Great Horned Owl would be big enough to take a small dog. A shame to kill one of those or lose your dog. One may be nesting nearby, what region do you live? I would discuss the problem with the local Game Warden. Please don't harm the raptor.

My 18 month old was playing in the front yard yesturday. I was about 15 feet from her. She was crouched on the ground playing with the grass. A hawk swooped down above her, about a foot and a half above her head, and then flew off. It scared both of us, we didn't even see it coming! I would guess it to be a Cooper's Hawk, and obviously a 25 pound toddler would be way too heavy, but it took a look anyways!! Christy

No, the hawk was not looking at or thinking about taking the baby. The child happened to be there as the hawk swooped past.

Your child is safe.

It clearly was taking a look, I not suggesting she wasn't safe, just thought it was an interesting story.
