id bird eggs

hi..... my 6 year old & i folded back the cushions on my outdoor glider tonight & discovered this nest inside the folded cushion. needless to say, we remained standing, but we've had a hard time identifying the bird that could've laid these eggs. can anyone help, or suggest some other sites we can explore?

Wrens eggs. They make nests in the silliest places sometimes.

Actually, skinny, that is an old wives' tale. Bird banders and ornithologists often handle chicks and eggs during research. The parent birds will return to the nest as soon as they can. (Assuming they aren't dive bombing the researchers.) With a very few exceptions (vultures and some sea birds), birds have no sense of smell at all, and have no idea anyone has touched the eggs or nest if they don't see it happen. The nest looks like it might belong to a wren, just based on general construction, and the egg is the right color, though it is hard to tell what the size is. Wrens will build nests in potted plants, in old shoes left outside, in clothespin bags on lines, in grills, on shelves, and in a variety of other manmade objects. That's my best guess on this one. And it is probably a Carolina wren, the one most likely to be nesting here and around people. Nice pics! Marcia

Sometimes different is bad; sometimes different is just different. I have to keep reminding my wife and myself that the Lord has been making bluebirds for a long time in all sorts of different circumstances. He has a method and while it may not always conform to our wishes that all hatchlings live and thrive it still seems to be working. We know of 150-160 birds that have fledged from the house in our back yard and I just know this ain't the first time a dropped worm turned into a beetle and crawled on a bird there. It's just the first time we saw it. This is our first year out of 20 with a camera in the box and we have thought every day how helpless and doomed those five little things were. And yet after 14 days there are 5 not so helpless little singers that will be winging their ways aloft in a few days to look for their own bugs. We will have to deal with some deaths in future clutches but every day just shows us more and more how well the Lord equipped these things to make more bluebirds.

Yes, wrens nest in crazy places, and the Carolina wren's nest looks like that. What's the status--is it safe?
