afternoon egg laying different bird Bet?

okay so this bird laid a second egg sometime between 12:30 and 3:00. She definitely likes the afternoon and this is a completely new thing for me! I wonder whether birds are consistent from year to year with this aspect of egg laying? or could this be the same bird from last year with a new pattern? She had no trouble navigating around the wren guard, which makes me think she has been here before, but could be coincidence. Any thoughts? Bet if your still checking mail I'd appreciate your input.

OKAY now I'm really confused. She is back; it's 3:30 and she is sitting on the eggs. She couldn't just have 2 eggs could she? I've never seen that before either. Has anyone seen a mother bird sit on the eggs before the whole clutch was laid? I have to shut this camera off NOW!

Sometimes different is bad; sometimes different is just different. I have to keep reminding my wife and myself that the Lord has been making bluebirds for a long time in all sorts of different circumstances. He has a method and while it may not always conform to our wishes that all hatchlings live and thrive it still seems to be working. We know of 150-160 birds that have fledged from the house in our back yard and I just know this ain't the first time a dropped worm turned into a beetle and crawled on a bird there. It's just the first time we saw it. This is our first year out of 20 with a camera in the box and we have thought every day how helpless and doomed those five little things were. And yet after 14 days there are 5 not so helpless little singers that will be winging their ways aloft in a few days to look for their own bugs. We will have to deal with some deaths in future clutches but every day just shows us more and more how well the Lord equipped these things to make more bluebirds.

Well I was so busy I was unable to visit the forums for responses. Kendra I haven't heard or seen HOWR in the vicinity. To add to that, the blues and swallows laying are around 100 yards apart. This is my neighborhood backyard site that has 2 pairs spaced 20 ft between boxes and about 100 or so yards apart. Nor have I found any destroyed eggs. I had HOWR problems in the past and that's why I moved the boxes...they are in my neighbor's massive field. Okay...The TRES and Blues didn't lay any more eggs! The TRES still have just TWO and they don't appear to be incubating. the other TRES nest that has 4 eggs are still unhatched (presumably gone bad due to upper 40 degree weather a few days ago) Another strange thing...at site #2 the swallows layed just 3 eggs and not sure if THEY are even incubating! What it the world is wrong with my birds this year?! By the way, I now think I've lost 3 female bluebirds already this year! If I lose one more I will top last year's record! Which was 3 in one season! I saw the male bluebird perched on the sparrow spooker in the Am and the powerlines in the PM. No sign of Mrs. Blue. Really wish I knew. This is the STRANGEST nesting season ever! My bluebirds can't even manage to complete a clutch! I might not see nestlings this year if this keeps up:( Mr. Blue might decide to leave:(..........why?!

Chipping sparrows seem to be really easy prey for the cowbird. For the last 2 years, I've seen the chipping sparrow come to my feeder and then feed the baby cowbird, which was twice the size of the chipping sparrow. Hopefully, this year, the cowbird isn't around. I've seen a pair of chipping sparrows at my feeder continually so hopefully, they will be more successful this year.

Lily, every one that enjoys any species of birds is lucky, too! I am very proud of my little PM colony though. I don't know where they're nesting, but I have a pair of catbirds that visit my nectar feeder every day. Yes; they have a sweet tooth hidden in that sharp little beak! I use an older style Opus nectar/"oriole" feeder. It has rubber plugs that function as bee guards. I took two of them off and was surprised at all the other birds that love sugar water when they can get too it. I've seen chickadees, house finches, purple finches, Hairy and Downey woodpeckers, and hummingbirds all using it, along with the expected orioles. Of course, I don't have a photo of the catbird on it, but this is the nectar feeder all the yard birds enjoy.

Oh yes! Photos will be showing up soon. Some of them will look like this! LOL This photo is from 2012; I already had eggs hatching on June 15 of that year. The eggs I have now won't hatch until about July 7.

Thanks to the webcam, sometimes a blessing, sometimes a curse, I saw her lay the third egg at 3:00 today. I will tune in tomorrow to see if she is consistent. Don't ask me why but I HAVE to know. haha
