My pekin duck laid eggs; her mate was killed 2+ months ago
Comments (2)Claudia, by now you probably already know this, but it sounds like what you have are not Pekin ducks, but Muscovy ducks. Also, they will only lay...no more than once a day, if that. So, no way could she have laid 11 eggs in the last week. Are you CERTAIN the other duck was a drake? If it was, you can bet they are fertile. Is she sitting on them? Pekins usually won't bother laying in a nest. The eggs are more like an inconvience to them, I think. Mine would leave them on the edge of the pond! Never once found two of her eggstogether. Muscovies are good mothers...:) Suzie...See MoreViolent Duck mating rituals. SCARY!!!!!
Comments (13)You can boo if you want to, but the local wild life has to eat to survive too, owls, hawks, foxes, coyotes would all benefit from a healthy meal of duck. I know it sounds cold-hearted, but remember that natures balance depends on the predators survival as well as animals who rank lower on the food chain. And a (formerly) pampered pet would be easy game to a predator. "Fish gotta swim, birds gotta eat," - the helpful pelecan in 'Finding Nemo'. I don't think eye pecking is a mating ritual, it's aberrant behavior probably brought on by overcrowding and possibly by competition among the males. If releasing them into the wild is cruel, why don't you think allowing them to peck the eyes out of the females is cruel? I bet those female ducks would agree with me, if they had a vote on the issue. Cheryl...See Morequestion about color of eggs and duck
Comments (4)yes, They are quite good to eat too, I used to breed rouen ducks until a coon got them all,I have found that the goats seem to discourage the predators for them. The downside is finding a stepped on egg every so often in the barn. her eggs last year did lighten to a shade of blue/grey, I jsut didn't know if the black was normal. My brother is in the copier business, and told me she was running out of toner when they turned grey! LOL!...See MoreMy duck Topaz just laid eggs and I have a Q about it.
Comments (4)Genny, you may want to get some false eggs for her. Not everyone will agree but I feel it encourages birds to stop laying and go broody when there is something left in their nests. You can likely find some plastic Easter eggs this time of year in a dollar store. Weight them with sand so they are about as heavy as a duck egg and glue or tape the halves together. When she goes broody, you take back the plastic eggs and give her the real ones. Don't worry about keeping the numbers the same... birds can't count. My American Buff goose went broody just a couple of days after my sister put one marble goose-sized egg in the nest. It was a bit of a joke, because when I picked it up it was much heavier than a real goose egg and very smooth. I couldn't figure it out until I saw her laughing. LOL. Sisters! But it did the trick....See Morebulldinkie
