I don't know about your region, but I'm in California and my hens will usually begin to lay in late April-early May and will continue through June. This year they are still laying and that's odd. If they are breeding, then the hen is probably ready to begin laying but I wouldn't pay much attention to it until next spring. Fertility is not great at odd times of the year with turkeys and the second year is always better overall. I would suggest that if she goes broody, you pen them up someplace safe because while they roost in the trees at night, they build nests on the ground and are an easy target when they are holed up on eggs.

Thanks Bet, I just saw her visit the nest (11:30AM) but no egg. OOPS she's back 11:50, maybe she likes to sleep in..unusual for me but thanks for confirming that it does happen! Good to see you, btw!

Kendra the last time I heard A HOWR was a few weeks ago. Since then nothing. Plus my boxes are in a large field that have never had HOWR using them. The site is so open the chances of another natural cavity being nearby is VERY slim. Donna I can just barely see it from my house. It is in my neighbor's field. My yard is open enough but is too close to woods and would just have problems with HOWR. (Which yes, used to cause me problems) I also saw a Cooper's hawk fly right through and by the boxes today. Another suspect. I think you have it right on the money Donna. And the nest appears the same and undisturbed so I highly doubt they layed more. Again, I never actually saw a 3rd, 4th, or 5th egg. I was away on a trip. So predation is very unlikely.

Well, I checked my bags of potting mix, but neither of the open ones have the moisture retention feature. I did buy one or more with that feature, though, so it's possible that's what I used in those little pots. Still, I'll continue to observe the "egg." This could turn into a blonde joke.....
