Texas White Ash

Last year, I purchased a small 5g Texas White Ash mainly because of its reputed fast growth. Since it was small one and I planted it last fall, I figured it wouldn't take long before it took off. Fast forward to today, it barely grew, maybe 6 inches so I'm confused so I thought I'd ask this forum who had experiences with this tree. Does it take that long time to get established before it takes off? Does it hate growing in mostly clay based topsoil? I read that it prefer dry well drained rocky soil (I did expect soil to be that way but turned out to be not the case). I'm just trying to figure out what I should do with it. Dig it up and replace it with something that likes that kind of soil (it's a flat ground so if it rains a lot, well it's gonna stay pretty wet). I can give it to my in laws parents since they never water or anything and in their backyard, it's sloped down so it won't get very soggy if it rains a lot.

Is that the same as the native Texas Ash? I have one. It grew slow for the first year or two and then shot up & out.

Yes it is same as native Texas Ash. Thanks. I guess it is more like oak trees that takes a while before growing rapidly. Montezuma cypress is another story. It started growing right away in the first year after fall planting (same as Texas Ash). Went from a little less than inch caliper at trunk base last fall to maybe 4 inches now and maybe 2 feet taller. I'm just frustrated with Texas Ash. It's only 3 feet tall or so but the trunk did get noticeably thicker so it's a sign that the roots are spreading out.

I too have a beautifully growing Texas Ash shading my back southern-facing porch from the brutal Texas summer sun. I love butterflies and have studied them all my life and was quite surprised to see flocks of Hackberry butterflies and Red Admiral butterflies all over the ends of the branches feeding all day, since ash is not on the diet of either of those species. Quite a sight, but when I saw the curled up leaves I suspected something was attacking the tree. I assumed the butterflies were sucking up sap from the leaves, but y'all's posts have helped me - THANKS!! Now to return the favor, since we know these are aphids, I have the perfect solution...LADYBUGS. These cute little insects are quite the predators and their favorite meal is aphids. I'm heading out today to a local nursery that sells them in a little mesh bag. All you have to do is put them in the refrigerator, where they go into a kind of "cryogenic" sleep until you are ready for to release them. Just take them out and they will come right back to life. I'm going to start releasing handfuls near my ash tree today.

Yes, my neighbor has it. They planted a 5g size in spring of 2006 and barely grew since then. Not sure why but it doesn't appear to be fast grower at all compared to other trees. not even close! Live oak is nice. I planted on at the neighborhood park (the very first one there) when I decided I didn't want it in the front yard facing west because I figured I'd need all the sun I can get during the winter after seeing electricity bill in the winter! For the park, I also planted chinkapin (the one with rare red fall color), burr oak, a few montezuma cypress, a few mexican white oak, lacebark elm (fast grower!), a couple of texas white ash and one "shumard" red oak which remains to be seen if it's actually pure shumard or not. Believe it or not, I did all of the work myself. I happened to live across the street from the park and it was sad looking place without trees and it gets freaking hot so I talked to HOA about it and they gave me money for it! Can't wait to see how they turn out in 10 years. At my house, I have some shantung maples, mexican white oak (turning out to be a nice one!), burr oak (leaves are always ugly for some reason; may get rid of it and replace with rare New Mexico Montezuma cypress), big tooth maple (nice red growth!). I just need one more medium sized, a fast growing one right in the front yard that would provide shade rather sooner than later. I didn't want shumard oak because it would get too big and crowd out other trees that I had planted. I figured Texas Red oak would fit the bill but I'm not in a hurry to decide. Still have time till fall for it. Oh, I live on limestone rubbles so they need to be able to tolerate growing in that kind of soil.

If you find her profile, click on her activity, and see if you can find one where she talks about diff flooring. she talks a lot about diff LVP brands. or, start your own post, with a few pics, and ask for advice on flooring choices. Another thing to consider when looking at the engineered floors is plank length. I just realized why I didn't like some of the photos I saw ... they had too many short pieces which gives the floor a choppy look and to me, it looks too much like a tile effect. The Uptown Floors suggested above sound great, and I will look at them more closely, but they still have "shorter" board (12" to 8 ft). I am looking at another company with board lengths from 3 ft to 12 ft. Those longer boards make a big difference in the overall look in a larger open floor plan. The longer boards do cost more, so I need to do some more comparisons and value of spending more for a more pleasing look. Their other specs are mostly similar. I think floors are going to be my hardest decision!

Lol. It's actually at the park across the street from my house when HOA asked me to plant trees with low budget last year. I had read that it was fast grower so I figured why not get it at 12 bucks (5g/3feet). It grew like 6 inches when I was hoping for a several feet since it was pretty small to begin with so I thought it wouldn't take that long to get established before growing rapidly. I'm just afraid of neighborhood kids destroying a baby tree... By the way, I am planning on donating 'Fire Dragon' shantung maple to the park when I move Live Oak to a better spot with more space. It's a little too close to Montezuma cypress where it will provide shade on the playground. Where Live oak is, it won't do much as far as providing shade. It's on the north side of playground. 'Fire Dragon' will go in its place. It won't get too big to get in the way of MC tree.

I have a park...well a backyard with kids, that would LOVE a Shantung Maple tree! LOL! PJ

I have plenty of regular shantung maples that I grew from seeds this past year. I can give you one next year! :)

I have three Texas Ash trees that were planted in 1996.
From 5 gallons

How can I describe them???

Hmmm...They have sort of a lacey look, almost understory like look...

I never expected them to become major shade trees. I just bought a bunch of trees when we moved in our house.

They are about 15 feet tall.

However, only one is in full sun. I don't pamper them or anything....

They don't give dense shade like a red oak or bur oak or monterry oak.
