homemade suet feeder

homemade suet feeder that works for me it is a scrape piece of wood hung by nylon strings with a plastic lid sitting on it. I bring the lid inside and fill it with homemade suet mix and put it back out.

I use either lard or shortning or bacon grease mixed with peanut butter and warmed in the microwave to soften and mix in chopped nuts or old trail mix and rolled oats dried fruit or cornmeal or grits. the lid is about 6 inches across and just about every type bird i get trys it out.

even the starling which i don't care for but feed anyway.

It sounds like an interesting idea, but your picture is a bit small (for my eyes anyway) to see the details. How do you keep the birds from gorging on the suet mix? I only fill a couple holes on the suet log each day, and put some crumbles on the tray. I'm not interested in subsidizing the House sparrows and Starlings of the neighborhood. Fortunately there are usually only a few of them that come to the feeders.

Hi,

It's not clear from the picture, is the plate the suet feeder or is the block thing below (with possible holes filled with suet).

oh my, blue birds...I love them, unfortunately they are practically extinct here on the Island due to the DDT spraying years ago. Yes, buy the meal worms...I understand it's easy to start raising meal worms...do a Internet search to get started...this way you can feed them all year long...Do you have nesting boxes for them? Look on youtube as well. We feed our birds black oiled sunflower seeds and thistle for the American goldfinches...and suet for all the birds. It's just a joy to watch them! We had multiple Cardinal babies born in our yard this summer...They were all over the place. I took so many movies of them, I would feed them on our deck and they would be just a few feet away from us. Joann

Common Grackles and other grackles are natives and they have their fans. I happen to like them myself - they eat caterpillars that defoliate trees. I'm happy to give them suet if they'll stay around long enough to slurp up the winter moth and other caterpillars that are a curse in my region. Claire

I ended up removing the suet feeder today as the sparrows figured out how to get enough of a foothold to eat from it. I guess upside down feeders just don't work here either. Its rather frustrating to look out into your yard to see all your nice feeders completely covered in house sparrows. So much so that I've almost quit feeding birds altogether a few times. I really do wish the neighbors would just quit feeding and putting out nestboxes for them. Woodpecker-feeders.com has one that they swear is starling resistant. Ive emailed the site owner and inquired if it is sparrow resistant as well, and I'm curious to hear what he says.
