need more birds

what kind of birds eat on the unside down feeder besides goldfinches

also want to get some bluejay to come i put peanuts in a shell and some sunflowers seed out but the squirrel and chip monk eat that i hear the blue jay but never see them

what kind of bird food can i buy for them?

I have a extra bird feeder maybe i can put it out with some food for the blue jays

My Scrub jays are gluttons for roasted in the shell peanuts (no salt). They're easy to tame when tempted with peanuts.

most any of the hanging birds will eat from upside down feeders. Nuthatches chickadees tits and woodpeckers and sapsuckers. grosbeaks try but have trouble hanging for long. most of the above birds eat suet or sorghum or molasses blocks with nuts or sunflower seeds raisens or
dried berys ect.
once the jays come they will eat almost anything especially peanuts and food scraps and mixed seeds and dry bread.

I use fingernail clippers to clip the seeds to expose the white meat inside, but just a bit, then I soak them overnight in water. I don't know if it's required, but it doesn't hurt. I do get volunteers around my garden, so they're not too tough from seed. Let us know which types of Caesalpinia pulcherrima you try and how they work out. Glad you like my Echium too. I'm still so suprised it has done so well here for so long. It self sows around my garden and I love it. It gets a bit tired looking mid summer but then perks up in autumn and does great. I'll check out some of Annie's other Echiums too. Great stuff! I get her catalog/emails and grow a lot of plants from her. Fun! Happy gardening all! I need one of those. Ceresone, loved your hawk story. Don't you wish you'd had a video camera. I saw something I remember a few years ago--2 somethings really. A Suet feeder attracted a titmouse and a redbellied woodpecker at the same time. They landed on opposite sides of teh feeder. The woodpecker didn't want to share and feinted at the titmouse to run it off. The titmouse left but returned just a few seconds later. The woodpecker feinted again. Titmouse left again. Titmouse returned in few seconds. The woodpecker grabbed the titmouse's beak in his beak, jerked him off the feeder, shook him a couple times and slung him over his shoulder. I laughed so hard inside the window only five ft away that I startled the woodpecker and he flew away. On another occasion I watched a squirrel come down a tree to drink out of the dog's water dish at the base of a tree. It is an old large skillet and a sparrow landed on the rim of it and began to drink while the squirrel was there. Sparrow at 3 oclock, squirrel at 6 oclock. Without looking up or making any indication that it was even aware of the little bird, the squirrel arched his tail over and whacked the sparrow on top of the head, knocking it off the rim. The sparrow left and again, I burst out laughing and startled the squirrel, which headed back up the tree. Sure wish I'd had a video camera.

I have a 14 inch plate with peanuts in the shell sunflower and dry bread and some corn seed in it.
I have 4 squirrels and 2 chipmonks the dish is empty in a couple of hours.they come full there mouth up and take off then come back 5 mins later
so now the only thing i can think about is a bird feeder so the chipmonks and squirrels cannot get to

its easy to make a pvc pipe pole and either bury the end of the pipe in the ground or a small bucket of cement so it stands up well. make sure its away from trees or fences or other things a squirrels can climb and jump across to the feeders. Squirrels and chipmonks can't climb the plastic pipe you can put 3 way T fitting on the top so a short pipe sticks out two ways. you can hang a feeder from each side either by a shepards hook or a hole in each side to use a cable or chain to hang the feeders, Put a platform on one side for nuts or fruit or bigger seeds and a hopper feeder or tube feeder on the other side for sunflower or saffflower or choppped nuts or raisens.

Magpies - they couldn't hang long enough to eat much but they would try to knock chunks out and then eat it on the ground!

magpies are the hardest scavenger to defend against as they will eat anything and will raid almost any feeder or platform. the only feeder i have found to slow them down is a cage feeder made of wooden dowels on end spaced around the edges of a platform with a hopper or tube feeder in the middle. the little birds fly thru the dowel spaceing and land inside. and if the platform is big enough the magpies can't reach inside far enough to get much.
