Help for an April Bride

Hello all! I have finally found "the one" and I am at the beginning stages of planning an outdoor wedding. But I feel a little unsure, and I keep asking myself, "what will this look like in April?" Will things be green? Will most of the trees be getting a good start on their leaves? Or will it be in that ugly half brown/half green state of being? I feel like I should know this since I fancy myself a gardener...but still I can't really picture the state of things at that time of year. I am leaning toward late April and it would really help if anyone could post pictures of their gardens/landscape/grass/trees at that time of year or point me in the right direction of some help. Thank you all so much!!

Congratulations on the spring wedding!

Congratulations! A spring wedding will be lovely. I don't know how quickly you green up in the DFW area, but in San Antonio, most things are blooming or green. Roses are particularly nice this time of year. Have you considered a large trellis or arbor, perhaps with potted roses in urns on either side for a nice backdrop?

Rose trees are available that time of year and make a nice grouping.

You could combine roses with any number of plants in bloom at that time of year. Pink jasmine and confederate jasmine are usually in bloom and can't be beat for scent.

This photo is a little later in the year, but if you have a gazebo or arbor, try hanging baskets for a romantic look.

I love the elegant look of wrought iron and the nice thing about it is that you can paint it any color you want to coordinate with your wedding. The same goes for pots and urns. The cutest thing I've seen recently are standard black nursery pots with vertical white stripes of duct tape so that it looks like a black and white striped pot without the effort of actually painting it that way.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes! I had a package in the mail from Raeanne - adorable cocktail napkins with some cute "broads" on it saying "when it comes to dieting, remember one simple rule....if you can't lose it, decorate it." She also sent me a beautiful card and some tokens for your pocket which everyone should have..a heart for love, a peace sign for hope, an acorn for long and healthy life, an angel to watch over you and the world because in the future it's in your hands. The little sack is in my bag right now! Thank you my wonderful friend! I hope you do make it to the Jersey shore - I'm waiting for you! Maddie, I adopted 2 female Bichon Frise from a rescue. The girls are 4 years old and are puppy mill moms rescued from an Amish mill 6 months ago in Lancaster, PA. Their foster family was wonderful and, while they have far to go in their socialization skills, brought them incredibly far. They are sweet, good and housebroken. All they need is TLC and patience. We're searching for a good trainer who can help us help them without traumatizing them. I love this breed - I had my Lacey, who I lost last July, for 15 1/2 years. They are being groomed on Saturday and I will post pics after that. I am definitely going to have to watch Food, Inc. I would love to have a garden or even an herb garden but the critters around here would eat everything. Right now we are battling moles. Getting my act together to head to my mom's house for dinner. Hey! Have a great weekend, everyone! Friday: Went to a garden party at the local nursery. Dress up affair with wine, appetizers and desserts while strolling along, looking at the new spring plants. They had a cool smooth jazz band. I met up with a gal pal there and it was fun! Saturday: Having a luau bday party for my 9 yr old. Starts at noon with hot dogs, SUN chips, and Capri SUN drinks, along with bday cake and Hawaiia music! Then we're playing Aloha sack races, pin the coconut on the tree, the wrapping paper game, limbo. After that, I have a video of "How to do the Hula". We're having everyone dress Hawaiian and greeting them at the door with leis and then taking their picture. While the party is going, my DD is going to print the pics and put them in little Hawaiian shirt frames and place them in the goodie bags, slong with Aloha mints, bracelets, and blow up beach balls. I have little Hula bears and other fun stuff for prizes. It'll be a fun day! At 3 o'clock, I'm going to veg out and crash!!!!! Sunday: Picking up my kids' cousin for the week (spring break) and we're heading for the Oregoin coast for a week. Life's a beach! After picking her up, we're going to visit my friend with the twins. The teens will watch the twins while I and my girlfriend clean house and help her get ready for a garage sale she's having next weekend. Sunday night, one of DH's friends rented a place and is giving a slide show. He's a photographer who travels the world and his shots are really awesome. It should be a GREAT show! Monday, first thing in the morning, I'm off to the coast! DH is putting together a new laptop for me, so I'm going to try to check in a couple times by wireless connection while I'm gone. Make this weekend a good one! PS: I forgot to mention, LAUNDRY!!!!! In between everything, there's the ever-present laundry. Raeanne???? Are we still doing laundry together on weekends? Thanks for the words of (mostly) support. Here's an update: I decided to go to the source for information. I sent an email to the Archdiocese of Phila asking what the facts are on this issue. The next day I got back what I believe was a 'form letter email' if you will. It basically stated that at present there is no rule either way on the wedding procession and that there will not be until new Marriage Rite (from the Vatican) is published in english. I sent a follow up on an unanswered question - can an individual parish pastor decide on his own to forbid the father escorting his daughter - if that is her desire? I also asked if this practice is 'not a part of the Marriage Rite' in the future, will there be any wiggle room that would let the father and daughter walk together; or would it be a sin or invalidate the ceremony? I got no response for several days. Since the original query was answered so promptly, I decided that in case I was now being ignored, that I would resend the same email with a header ( second request, third request, etc.) every day until I heard from them. Well, after a week, I got a response, a personal one this time. The Marriage Rite is published with individual differences in different countries according to local practices / customs. Again, there is no current policy addressing who walks with whom; walking with my daughter is no sin and it would not invalidate the ceremony even after the Marriage Rite is published. I gave a copy of the emailed response to a friend of my wife. Her daughter is going through the same thing. It's my hope that she shoves the email right under my pastor's nose and calls him out on it, but I don't know how confrontational she is.

What do you have in your yard? April is exciting here in DFW plants are awakening. But that's your point right? You are in luck because TxKitty has great suggestions and you can buy almost any plant you will want and set them around in April. AND You could request them as gifts and set them out as they arrive just before the wedding. I went to a July wedding where the father of the bride decided to spend the money he would have spent on cult flowers on landscape blooming shrubs. A white gown and purple brides maids gowns were really enhanced by the natural plants and instead of trash the plants lived on just like the marriage.
AND you can plant daffodils and tulips to have a glorious show from March through mid April. Ranunculus are an underused plant that like it in our cool springs. Anemone corms soaked and planted now will begin blooming in early March and the foliage looks good all winter. If you want white they have them. If you are thinking about roses you'll have them blooming in mid April too....usually.

Remember if you find there isn't enough blooming in your garden, you can always get a few containers and plant some colorful petunias or other spring annuals to give a punch of color to your space.
