Attn Element about confederate rose

Hi Element, I got two cuttings from you last fall and they one is blooming like crazy. I just love the huge blooms. Some are dark pink and some are light pink on the same plant. Is this normal? When can I take cuttings?

I got only one cutting from him, Kay, and it, too, has bloomed. I have a couple that I have had for some time. I cut them back BEFORE the first freeze and root them in water. Element may have a different way of cutting them back.

Hi Carrie,
Thanks for the reply. I was trying to see if I need to cut them now or wait until after all the blooms are spent. I guess I can enjoy the blooms for a few more days before cutting them. I was afraid that the stems would be too young to cut and that it wouldn't root.

BTW, are your brugs still blooming? Mines are shooting out new buds so it will bloom again in a few days. My yellow ones bloomed at the beginning of spring, but my pinks ones has been blooming since september. I so happy to grow the brugs. These are my favorite!!

If you come outside onto my front porch we will lay in the Swingbed and take our Folgers I.V. I put a light cover over me if the cool winds are blowing from OK. Yes Southerners do SPRAWL out on their front porches, LOL and snorting!!!!. I use a mosquito net in the summer. This swing holds a regular twin sized mattress. Hubs did not build it. It holds 2 adults, 2 dogs and whole bunch of grandbabies that I dont have yet. I took the doggies to the pond in our neighborhood. Windy and high 60's but supposed to chill down this week some. My hair ended up wrapped around my face and my lips pruned up. Check out the pier. That is where the wise-as_ kids who took my bike for a spin one night dumped it. You should have seen me jump in my car in my pajamas going to hunt them down and retreive my bike. (See why Hubs wont let me have a gun????) I was running to the pier, flannel and terry cloth flying in the wind. There was plenty of unintelligible fussing and stomping around in my furry house shoes. They had removed the front basket that my poodle dog rides in (I'm guessing they were fishing and needed a place to put their fish.). Yes, I am one of those ladies who ride around with a dog in the front and a dog in the back. Now you know why they took the basket and left the "Maw Maw" bike. Watched the Sun sparkle on the water. Went down to the fishing lake. Came back to the empty nest to find an ORB on my roof. Help!!!!! Kudzu. What kind is that???? Enjoyed adopted poodle, Bailey Jo hiding behind the pansys!! Shhhh-hhh-hhh, he doesn't know he is adopted. He thinks he came from planet VISA like his little brother did. I hope you enjoyed our little walk. In August it will be too hot 'for me' to do this at this time of day. You might save some snow in your freezer to send to me then. Thinking about my favorite snow bears!!!!!! Susie/DFW TEXAS

Jackie, Good for you! Fragrance is very important. BUT, most of the time, I can't smell most of my roses. The Rugosa Rotesmeer is the only rose I grow which consistently provides me scent. I can also smell myrrh which is probably why I like it. I can pick up a little wafting scent as I walk through the garden. It is light and pleasing. But, disappointing when you figure I have at least 30 very fragrant roses. On the other hand, the fragrance of the butterfly bushes is overwhelming. And I love my "Miss Kim" too. So fragrance is not necessary to allow me to love my roses.

Darlene, I'd love elephant ear if you still have some (or one). My brugs ARE still blooming, Kay. I will be cutting the ones inground soon and it is very painful for me as they still have buds on them. They are wonderful plants, though be it time consuming.

This plant is from my grandmother's neighbor's yard. It gets to much shade.

As for your confederate rose starting out white and turning pink. This is correct. Its strange, but some of the cuttings will do this mine do not. But then again my new cuttings aren't blooming this year.

As for cutting them back. What I normally do is wait till after first frost when all the green dies back. I then cut it back to 3 inches from the ground and MULCH heavily. Hopefully it comes back next season! Each year it will get bigger and produce more blooms!

Now my in-laws just sold their home and had to leave theirs behind? I went to dig them up and they left one stump that was over a foot tall. In 3 years, the trunk is over a foot in diameter thick and they do not mulch them. I could not dig it up w/o destroying their yard.

Element--Thanks for the reply. yes, mines does have varying range of color from verylight pink to dark pink. WOW-- those are huge!! I didn't think it would grow that big. I guess I better move mines to a different spot or else it will choke all my other flowers in my little flower bed. Thank you so much for the pictures. It was very helpful.

You're welcome. :) It will probably take a couple of years to get that big. Those are around 10 years old, maybe older.

O.K. people how do you root this cuttings? I friend of mine gave me a cutting , Her plant blooms white RED and pink at the same time!But anyway my cutting died,so I would like to know how to root this plant before I get another cutting so that this time I can actually have a confederate rose to brag about. Thank you all so much marcie

Check out this link on the southern gardening forum. Rooting in water really does work, but I think timing has a lot to do with it.

The ones Element gave me, I root them in just plain water. When the roots start to show I planted them. For some reason, the one I planted in my raised flower bed did very well, but the one I planted in my other flower bed is still a very little lonely stick with just a few leaves, no blooms :-(

The three I got from my Mom last year are blooming like crazy this year. She just cut some stems in the fall,(about as big around as your thumb) in about 10" sections and shoved 3 of them into a large pot of damp soil. She left them outside the greenhouse all winter and brought them to me in the spring and they did great!

I should have more cuttings by next spring. Most will already be rooted. I can not get any cuttings until this Dec. Those plants are in AL. I will not make another trip until then.
