This is great!

We had a snow storm yesterday, and DH and I were out in it all day. We lost count of how many times we had to scrape ice off the van!

I feel warmer already seeing these great pictures!!

One serious problem that I had in my zinnia breeding was that bees will grab any available zinnia pollen. I mentioned previously that I started using "hairnets" last year and they solved the bee problem. I used to have to race the bees to get at the pollen on my selected breeder zinnias, but the nets let me relax and get the pollen over a period of many hours. The nets insured a good supply of breeder pollen and they can also keep the bees from randomly pollinating female breeder flowers. I make the "hair nets" from mesh fabric. I got mesh fabric from the fabric department of Wal-Mart. The material is inexpensive and has an open mesh that allows easy air circulation and sun exposure, while keeping bees from getting at the zinnia flowers. The nets are reusable. The nets don't harm the flowers or plants at all. I have seen butterflies sipping nectar from zinnias through the mesh of a net, but they don't go after the zinnia pollen, so I don't mind if the butterflies do feed through the mesh. The nets are simply approximately square "sacks". I fold over a rectangular piece of the mesh and secure the top seam and side seem by weaving a piece of black yarn through the mesh. I alternate sides with the yarn about every ½" to ¾". The seam doesn't need to be really closely stitched. Obviously I leave the bottom open to allow the "hairnet" to fit down over the flower. I use black mesh and yarn because the black nets are less conspicuous in the zinnia patch. I make the nets in several sizes to accommodate different sized flowers. You shouldn't have any trouble making these nets to your own specifications and designs from needles, yarn, and mesh fabric from a local fabric store. Deeper nets are more wind resistant, but shallower nets are easier to remove and replace for access to the zinnia. MM

I have decided what to do I am going back to garden beds not one huge garden with no paths. I only did that to accommodate my next year's attempt of a 3 sisters garden, but I am not going to try that next year after all. this year was a flop. and...Texas is a bit hot for corn and I read about all the problems with a 3 sisters garden. First the beans produce less. You need a really big place since if things are too close together, the beans will not get enough light. Sweet corn is not strong enough to support pole beans. I think from what I read, dent corn was used by the Indians. I could try that, but not sure family would like it since it is not as sweet as modern sweet corn. It gets very tall too, which would shade the beans even more. I have lots of food allergies and about all I can eat is legumes in the green stage (not dried), beets, winter squash and broccoli . So I believe I should focus my efforts there. I am not trying broccoli in Texas though. Fresh broccoli is easy to purchase organic. Limas, and cow peas can't be purchased green in any store around here. Green beans and peas can be purchased frozen at the health food store, but never fresh. Beets and winter squash are hit and miss. So there is a big benefit for me growing these. I am planting celeriac and rutabaga too. I purchased those at a whole foods once and they did not make me sick. Those two are not available at my local health food store. I do not think I will have any luck with celeriac, but I will give it a go. I am also planting herbs and greens for my family this fall. Not such a big deal if they don't work out though, since they do not eat organic. Anyway, I will build beds (again) about 12 X 3. 2 beds by the house and 2 further out. I am making them longer this time since everything does better closer to the house where it is cooler and gets more afternoon shade. If I made them shorter with paths between it would waste the valuable, close to the house space. The reason I am breaking up the beds with 1 path between, is 1 long bed is annoying to have to carry the hose around and I need to leave a space for the down spout. That area now is nothing but mud with all the rain we have been getting. I am not going out as far, as I have the huge garden now. Everything dies past 8 feet out, too hot! I guess I would have never known all that stuff unless I tried it first. If I don't have enough room for the beans, I will try something I saw in web land. They attached strings to the house gutter and attached to the ground. The beans climbed those. I also saw some neat beans climbing up privacy fences with strings. Sounds like a plan. As far as the drought problem. I will dig 1 foot round holes every 2 feet in the center of the beds. I will fill with rocks and put mulch over that. I will only water the holes when the soil shows to be dry. I surely hope that works. I did not think the ditch idea would work as well because: 1. the sides would eventually fall down 2. if I filled the ditch with water, even plants that did not need water would get it 3. seemed to me, the ditches wasted too much space 4. no place to walk 5. boring rows resulted 6. the mud problem near the down spout 7.water would evaporate from ditches unless I covered with mulch or something and would have to be re-dug when everything decomposed. If I filled with rocks, that would be a lot of rocks. 8. ditches wasted valuable close to the house space 9. too much water in the spring and fall, creating mud Just did not seem to be feasible to me. I filled in the ditches. I can't make beds until the current plants are done producing. I guess I will put things pretty much back the way they were in stages. Your post on ollas gave me courage to try out my rock/hole idea. Thanks for posting it. It is way cool! I hate to fail. I need a success every once in a while to keep up this gardening thing. I got so little produce so far. Here are the only things I have gotten so far: last fall -2005 about 5 winter squash - very sweet and yummy no sugar pumpkins 1 jackolantern in December - too late to use this spring - 2006 about 3-4 weeks of English peas every other day. Not sweet 5 small beets - not sweet 2 tiny rutabagas - not great taste no parsley - no sprout no scallions - no sprout no onions - no sprout no radish - died in heat as seedlings no spinach - no sprout lots of over ripe cover crop radishes not doing these thing in spring ever again. This summer - 2006 5 ears of poorly formed corn with ear worms about 6 tomatoes (from 2 plants) no green beans - plants died in heat, except one plant, it is blooming now (Sept 2006) no limas - very few sprouted, rest died in heat 1 unripe charentais melon - picked cause it split, rest of plants died tasted OK, but rather crunchy , pour sprouting no cucumbers - very few sprouted, rest died a couple of handfuls of cow peas, that I found out I was picking unripe. The last handful I picked, tasted great since I waited till the pods were yellow. I boiled in homemade beef broth with a bit of rendered beef fat. I would love to get at least 1 cup to make a decent meal for one. I will say things are going a bit better this fall. Hear is what has sprouted so far wax beans limas peas 7 beets squash - some have borers others may but not looking sick yet cowpeas - making pods! 2 rutabagas 2 radishes 0 cabbage - need to give a few more days I am disappointed with the beets, rutabaga and radish. I planted more beets and rutabaga. Sorry the post is so long. I am home bound so gardening fills my days, ether doing it or thinking about it. I wish it was working out better. Texas is very inhospitable. I will give the things that I have had little to no success with, a few more tries then giving up on them. My grandma had a nice large garden in Vermont. She did not have everything keel over like this. Just had frost to worry about. Not willing to move to the arctic for a bit of gardening success though. Thanks for listening. Mary

Lambertson does not have any frilly edges...yet. There will be 1 in his '09 intros. He was talking about the excessive ruffling & angel wing cultivars from other hybridizers that he had issues with. His should just pop open because he doesn't have the ruffle factor. The part I'm concerned about with his intros is the heat playing a factor on color saturation. You always have to worry where you put a particular dl regardless of whether it is northern or southern grown. Is there tree or shrub root competition for water or nutrients? Is it on a slope, is it sitting low where frost hits the hardest...blah, blah, blah. I have the experience of my oh so famous way of planting things in 3's for a design element & I can personally attest to the fact that they don't all grow the same even though they may be a few feet apart from each other, all bought at the same time from the same grower & getting the same amount of water & fertilizer. Genetics of plants come into factor as well. When I was selling nursery stock for a living I found out that brand new cultivars of anything was pumped full of fertilizers to get them to grow as fast as they possibly could to get them out on the market. Those initial ones were not winter hardy! After a few years passed by & everything calmed down they got back to the natural growing behaviors that they were genetically incorporated to handle & then became winter hardy again. Do I dare even bring this up? Deathly afraid of getting hammered on here, but where did you buy them? Off the LA where they have been used for hybridizing? How small were they when you got them? This is the world of gardening where nothing ever grows the same even 2 feet away from each other. You can't bank on anything. I am one to definitely play the cards. I grow 2 dozen japanese maples in my yard that have defeated the odds & live on to be growing vigorous where no one thought they would. Same thing with exotic conifers... You never know until you try it. By the way, even though they are considered to be 'southern' some of those hybridizers do try to breed for the north. Petit & Peat have partnered up & Peat has a nursery in Canada that he tests their cultivars in. Stamile talks about his new cultivars that actually should be taller & more robust in the north. He also mentions several of his cultivars that are emo's that pop open in 40 degree weather. Not all of them will fly just anywhere, but you can't eliminate them just because they are 'southern'. I guess I may change my tune in several years if they fail me. I highly doubt it though, because I did my homework. I fail to see a lot of the northern hybridizers having huge branching & bud counts at this point where I see the southern bred ones much higher. I realize I will lose some of that due to my weather but it should make them VERY comparable to what is going with the northern ones. Why not take a few southerns until those northern ones get better? Sorry to say, in my mind's beauty eye, they still are prettier & enjoy them until the northern ones catch up. Should I deny myself of that? There are only 2 northern hybridizers that I can compare to what is going on down there & that is Brooker & Hanson & I will get them into my garden as I can find them available...not so easy because they seem to be consistantly sold out on the cultivars I want.

Thanks for the words of encouragement and photo ideas grannybj65, I have a really nice digital camera and plan to take LOTS of photos all along the way as I develop the garden. The photos linked here were taken by a good friend. I have an eye for good snapshots so once I'm down there I'll be taking dozens of photos from all angles and different weather conditions. The joy of digital photography - you never run out of film. LOL One of the things I like to do is take a series of photos from the same angle all day long on a sunny day to get a general idea of where the shady and sunny spots are. Doing that a few times throughout the year as the Earth changes kilter I'll perfect an image in my mind of where best to place different plants based on their light/shade tolerance. Looking at the photo of the front of the house dead-on, I just got a great idea. Facing the house, the living room is on the right side with the single window and the kitchen is on the left side with the double windows. In front of the double windows inside is the kitchen sink, so it is not a spot that will have tremendous "looking out the window" appeal. So, as the cogs turn in this hard head of mine, I'm visualizing lattice from the center pole on the porch going to the left corner, then around to where the porch meets the house. Then cutting a rectangular window out of the center of the front of the lattice and framing it a bit so there is a clear view out to the road from the kitchen window. And then I can visualize the lattice painted white (or more likely light gray as I'm not too fond of white outside) and covered in Scarlet Runner Bean and Clematis with maybe some "Joseph's Coat" (Amaranthus tricolor) in front and some dwarf Cannas with some "Love lies Bleeding" (Amaranthus sp.) along the side. The scarlet, violet, purple and deep reds and burgundys will all be in harmony with one another, at least until I decide on a totally different look down the road. I can have a nice metal frame rocking deck seat out on the porch hidden away behind the wall of vines where I can sit and enjoy the shade - and a good spray from the gardening hose on all the vines will create a nice cooling breeze. Well, it's a thought anyway. :) I saw on eBay this evening someone in San Diego California is selling several batches of Tillandsias (the common T. ionantha). They are offering them as a box of 50 child fist-sized clumps of them for around $20 if I recall - quite cheap. I immediately thought how neat it would be to buy 50 or 100 clumps and then carefully wire them to a wire-frame wreath for a living, blooming front door wreath, especially once the front porch is semi-latticed in and well shaded. A few sprigs of Spanish Moss draping down from the wreath here and there would further kick off the effect. It would live on the wet air, constantly regenerate itself with new growth, and bloom off and on throughout the year. During the colder months I could bring it inside and hang up it in the living room window where it can get plenty of bright indirect light. Ok, I'll shut up now.

It was in the 60's here today but working in the sun had me sheading the sleeves!!!!! However, everything gets brown or straw colored this time of the year.

I would love to see some snow but only for a few days. I am not hearty enough to fight the elements anymore. LOL Ya'll will have to enjoy some hot chocolate and hang on!!!!

I'll be praying for a cool breeze to be sent this way next August!!!!!!

If you come outside onto my front porch we will lay in the Swingbed and take our Folgers I.V. I put a light cover over me if the cool winds are blowing from OK. Yes Southerners do SPRAWL out on their front porches, LOL and snorting!!!!. I use a mosquito net in the summer. This swing holds a regular twin sized mattress. Hubs did not build it. It holds 2 adults, 2 dogs and whole bunch of grandbabies that I dont have yet.

I took the doggies to the pond in our neighborhood. Windy and high 60's but supposed to chill down this week some. My hair ended up wrapped around my face and my lips pruned up.

Check out the pier. That is where the wise-as_ kids who took my bike for a spin one night dumped it. You should have seen me jump in my car in my pajamas going to hunt them down and retreive my bike. (See why Hubs wont let me have a gun????) I was running to the pier, flannel and terry cloth flying in the wind. There was plenty of unintelligible fussing and stomping around in my furry house shoes. They had removed the front basket that my poodle dog rides in (I'm guessing they were fishing and needed a place to put their fish.). Yes, I am one of those ladies who ride around with a dog in the front and a dog in the back. Now you know why they took the basket and left the "Maw Maw" bike.

This pic I took during spring. The highlight in this bed was Salvia desoleana, the tall plant that has some leaves hanging over the edging. Flowered profusely and I'm now collecting seed to sow so I can have this plant all around the garden. It's one of the few Salvias that tolerates frost. {{gwi:77056}}

Here are a a few peaches ready for picking. There is nothing like picking peaches from your own tree. This has been a real treasure for me since I come from New York city where I had never even seen a peach tree. I love to pick them in the late morning, after the sun has had the chance to warm them up a bit. When you bite into them they are warm and the juice drips from your mouth. The are HEAVEN!

Soooo pretty. I can't wait until spring. Susie your house is beautiful. I wish I could sit on your lovely swing. Jules nice pics! It so funny to me that CA poppies are protected in CA cuz once you have them here they are like weeds. The garden club uses them on some traffic islands where its become dangerous for us to do much weeding or planting. They are gorgeous. Thank you golden pond for your pictures and for thinking of us!

Thanks for thinking of us, goldenpond! And thanks to the rest of you Southerners for posting your lovely pictures! We sure need to see some of that green and sunshine. Up here it is dreary, cold and the snow is all gray. Very depressing. With every year, I can definitely understand why Northerners move south when they retire!

GP ~ Wonderful pictures of your lovely gardens. I'm always inspired. That trout looks like it must have been delicious.

Jules ~ Your little hummer made me smile and I love your poppies.

Suzie ~ How inviting your porch swing looks. The pond and lake in your area look really nice also. Loved the deep blue sky in the fishing lake picture. Your home is lovely and Baily Jo a cutie pie.

Cait ~ How wonderful to be able to pick and eat your own peaches. Love the picture of your bed of salvia and the buddleia with the butterfly is great! I know what you mean about the heat wilting you so that you just want to stay indoors. We have lots of heat and humidity here for about 6 months, plus hurricane season for 6 months.

I'm in s.e. FL and this morning was really nice, then it clouded up and turned cooler. Tuesday night the coldest weather yet is predicted, 38 and supposed to feel like it's 27. YIKES! That is COLD for us. I think I'll have to take in my little orchid collection, and may cover my herbs and maters in my main garden. The rest will have to hack it.

I took the following pictures today. They made me feel thankful for what we have, and sorry I've wasted so much time, with what if scenarios. This is where we are, and I hope to continue to grow where I am planted.
