2 Eggs No sign of pair for four days..=(

I am new here and also completely new to bluebirds, although not new to watching other birds raise their families. We noticed a week ago when we would open our door to leave there was a pair of bluebirds under our shelter. They never fly very far while we are out in our pool etc. I am surprised they built their nest right where we are most active. On Monday, after much watching, I finally found where they were nesting. I was able to get a picture on Tues of two beautiful blue eggs. We've not seen the pair since. I am wondering if the fireworks we had on Sunday may have scared off the pair. The eggs have been untouched and have not moved in position since the Tues. picture. I do not know when they were laid. Should I just leave it all untouched and hope they return. I have seen what we believe are House Sparrows and have learned by searching how dangerous they are to bluebirds. I have seen them close to our shelter, but no sign of them building or being what I would call close to the nesting site, but I can't be sure of course. The eggs look in tact and again undisturbed. If the house sparrows had gotten to them, I am sure we'd know. Right? Do we just wait and hope the bluebird pair comes back? It's amazing how in just three or four days, we got used to easing our door open as not to disturb the pair and now there is just no sign of them.

I guess I would leave it for a bit but if they haven't been around since they probably abandoned the nest. The female normally lays one egg each day until the clutch is complete and then start incubation. If there were HOSP that got into there the eggs would be smashed. Maybe you should put up a nestbox (on a slick metal pole with predator bafle) and see if they would return to nest in a better place. Thank you Donna. We've lived here 20 yrs and this was the very first time bluebirds built here. I have noticed that the couple we thought to be HOSP are not here anymore either. I think we may try a box next year. We aren't home a lot to monitor it, so I've read if you can't it might be better just not to put one up. It might be better for us to just watch our barn swallows and mockingbirds. Thank you also for the website. It is an excellent site.

Shellybabe, the last (6th) chick hatched with a funny crook in it's neck. It's not eating much and seems sick. It's under a heat lamp in my bathroom with water and room to run around. I'm thinking it's going to either die peacefully or be a runt that I keep as my favorite pet. Poor little thing. There is no way to give it to mommy hen and the others. My hen is a great mother. And she knows how to count. When she was distracted I scooped up one baby and a few moments later she started counting, noticed one was missing and went nuts until I put the little one back down. I find that freaking amazing. Meanwhile, they are putting up with a zillion teenaged boys on a skate ramp only feet away from the henhouse. Hopefully chickens don't need peace and quiet.

Congrats, and break out the candy cigars! Sometimes they remove unhatched eggs, sometimes not. I like to wait at least 3 extra days to see if it will hatch, but after that, a nestling would be so far behind the others, it would not likely be able to compete and would not survive anyway. You don't have to remove unhatched eggs, but usually I do. They are SO fragile, though, it must be done very carefully. You don't want to crush it and soil the nest, which would surely attract ants and other problems. You can use a spoon; I have a nice plastic one that came with MiracleGro that has 2 ends, one end is very deep and holds the egg nicely so it won't roll out. BlueBars

I had a lady blue get trapped in a HOSP trap house too. They were already nesting with one egg in another house so I didn't think it was a problem. After I released her, I beleive she left my area. My male called and called for three days. I don't think your lady blue will go back there. I THINK another female showed up and did some building on their nest with one egg. That egg disappeared after a few days of her reworking the nest? Now she has four new eggs and is incubating. I like the hole reducing idea.. will get one for my trap house so this doesn't happen again.

Hi all -- Diane -- Hope you are being dramatic with language, "If I survive..." Prayers to you that you get well soon. I grow French Lace, and I can say with certainty that this rose seedling is not French Lace, thought it could be a parent - who knows? It's not a seedling I directed. Kristine -- you are making me want peaches peaches peaches. For our faculty retreat, we had an "iron chef" competition. Four professors as head master chefs, and all the faculty divided into four teams. Then each team under the iron chef made 3 dishes, plus beverages. We all ate amazing food. Afterwards, everyone was so exhausted, no one stayed for the film. I am going to bed now. Good time, but hard work. I mention this because one of the iron chef desserts included peach slices, some kind of chocolate ganache in the middle of the plate, and then somethign else on the side. When I got my little plate I had no fork, so just dipped a peach in the chocolate and was VERY HAPPY. No more from me for a while -- very busy week. Worried about my Dad. He may be having "issues" now. Wish he lived closer. Hope all of you are doing well and your gardens are thriving. :-)
