Don't give mealworms pineapple

I had the mealies out of the fridge Saturday for their weekly "thawing" and thought I'd give them some of the pineapple I was cutting up as a treat instead if the usual lettuce, collards, carrots and cabbage. They ate it, but I think even with small pieces the fruit was too moist. It seems like once the bran gets that slightly moist feeling the worms start dying. In the future I'll stick to less juicy foods- I think lettuce is their favorite. Just sharing my experience in case anyone has been experimenting too!

When I first began ordering from Sunshine, they recommended either carrots or apples, sliced very thin...I follow their instructions, but my mealies never look any better even after I feed them...they don't plump up, so to speak! Maybe mine need a new menu!!!

They pig out though! I'm always amazed when I put a thin piece of lettuce or a collard leaf in there and come back in a few hours and it's almost gone! If you listen very carefully I swear you can hear them eating too...

Hey, I've got a Bluebird pair nesting in my backyard this year, and they aren't following the "rules" either. One - My back yard could be described at best as an "open woodland" with numerous large canopy trees, plenty of evergreens, shrubbery, and tangled thickets, intermixed with some lawn, gardens, and a couple overgrown meadow/weedy areas. A very mixed habitat. While numerous Bluebirds visit daily during the winter to eat the home-made peanut butter suet, they usually disperse by Spring and I never in a million years expected any to nest here. On the plus side, the next door neighbor has a large lawn he mows and there is a meadow across the street, so they probably hunt there, but I often observe them perching and hunting in my yard too. Two - Even though I rushed to put up a traditional Bluebird nestbox mounted on a pole w/baffle, the Bluebirds have chosen to nest in NATURAL CAVITIES in the dead pine snags in my back yard. They have had 2 broods and chose 2 different natural cavities for each brood, while ignoring the nest box. One cavity was about 20 feet up, one about 10 feet up. Guess they didn't read about safety rules, proper hole size, and predator guards. :) I am very excited because their 2nd brood fledged about a week ago, they disappeared for awhile, and today Mr. and Mrs. Blue showed up to repeatedly retrieve some suet nuggets and fly off to the large Pin Oak in the front yard where I'm guessing the fledglings were hanging out! You shouldn't have to worry about any of them nesting for a while. The House Wrens may still migrate further south, and you may end up with Bluebirds for the winter, which is loads of fun. Do you have anything to feed them like suet or mealworms? I guess what I'd do in the spring is put up more housing for the Bluebirds, and move the one the HOWR know the location of. You could also leave it up and if the HOWR come back to claim it, just keep removing the sticks to discourage them. Have you been to the sialis web site? If not, I'd strongly encourage you to do so. They have tons of information like how far apart to space the boxes, what kind of guards to use, etc. Good luck getting Bluebirds to nest there in the spring. My Yuzu tree also has fruit, but I have not counted how many. I also have a bottle of Yuzu juice that I have not yet opened. Yesterday I went to TJ's and bought two pineapple plants. I'm not sure how much sun to give them - the pineapple plantations I've seen were growing in full sun in the tropics, but when I put my other pineapple plant in full sun, the leaves seemed to get a bit burned, and so I put it in partial shade. The tag with the plant said "bright light" but also indicated that it could be grown indoors if you are not in zones 9-11. I put one of the new plants in full sun (see below) and the other one in partial shade, next to the other pineapple bromeliad. I will move the one in full sun if it starts to get burned. Lars

I don't get the marshmallow sweet potato dish

My camera memory card died so I can't take pictures right now. But the sweet potato dish was a hit. Here's how I ended up making it. Didn't use an egg, and the vanilla yogurt was moldy so didn't use that., it would have been unnecessary anyway. I scrubbed four sweet potatoes, and put them in a 9 inch metal pan with a little bit of water in the bottom, and baked them at 400 degrees for just under an hour. Then I peeled them and diced them up and mixed them with about a half cup of crushed pineapple, 2 TBLSP of melted butter and 2 TBLSP of brown sugar and a heaping half tsp. of cinnamon and a tiny pinch of salt. Mixed and mashed this all together and put it into a greased 8 inch pyrex baking dish. Topped with mini marshmallows mixed with chopped walnuts, two big hand fulls. Took this to dad's house covered in foil. Baked at 375 covered for about 35 min. and then uncovered for about 10 more. I have to say I kinda liked it and the marshmallows went well with the toasted nuts. They didn't add much other than color and texture to the top, but that was not necessarily a bad thing. It was totally a dessert though, but since I just had ham and rice pilaf and salad to round out the meal, it was fine, not too sweet under those circumstances.

Yes...they need to be fed!!! I learned that when I first began the "mealworm thing"....my supplier suggested once a week, so that's what I do...I take them out of the fridge, put a few very thin slices of apples or carrots, and let them feed for about a day...then back in the fridge..there may be a better way, but I'm still not sure what that is!!!

If you use them up pretty quickly they really don't need to come out and be fed much. Once every other week is sufficient. I use apple slices, they only need the fruit for moisture otherwise they eat the wheat germ or oatmeal that they are in. I had some in the fridge for five months and kept forgetting about them, only had them out about three times to feed. I did loose some of them but some lived for those five months with just being fed 3x. Just make sure you take the fruit back out before you put them back in the fridge or the moisture will mold and kill the worms.
