Live pineapple plants with pineapples at Trader Joe's

As we were leaving Trader Joe's on Monday, we noticed that they were selling live pineapple plants, all with pineapples already growing on them, but not yet ripe. We had already finished our shopping, but I plan to go back to try to buy one or two. They were about $12 each and are attractive plants. I already have a larger pineapple plant in my back yard, but I won't get a pineapple on that until next year. The pineapple plants in the nurseries here cost twice as much as TJ's.

Just thought I would give you a heads' up, as these are probably seasonal and won't be available for very long.

Wish I could get up to our TJ's, but they are two hours away. Hope you get a couple. Post pictures if you do.

My Dad started a pineapple plant fom top of on MANY years ago. After he died, just couldn't leave it behind. It took SEVERL years before it had a "baby". About size of large egg too begin with. When it got to orange size , and bending over stem, cut it off. Super fragrant and hard as a rock. AFter several days on counter... TOTALLY edible, even core.

You may want to try the Bromeliad forum as pineapples are of this family. I do believe that like most bromeliads after they bloom, the mother plant will shoot some side shoots or "pups" then eventually die. Don't know if your plant will fully ripen for you, but it is said of pineapples that they don't continue ripening after they are picked, so you want to make sure it's ripe when you pick it. Look for yellow color.

Ok, that is a great idea. Instead of rooting more cuttings and plant them later, I will lay some of the branches on their sides so they will fill in the space. Thanks. These are grown in clay soil on the west side of the house with plenty of sun. The day time temperature has been in the mid to high 80's. Night time temperature has been in the high 50's to low 60's. At the rate they have been growing, I should have a hedge of pineapple sage by Christmas. I am amazed at the difference in the plant structure. The one pineapple sage that is still in a 12" pot looks leggy and bare. The ones in the ground that I made from rooting cuttings look so much healthier. The stems are thicker(about pencil size)and the plant is not leggy.

Here's the information we posted on this page two years ago, Norbert, about how we encourage pineapple plants to produce fruits: We place an entire apple beside the base of the pineapple plant, Elena. Because your plant is growing in a pot, you should enclose the entire potted plant in a large clear plastic bag, and close the bag (underneath the pot for a more esthetic appearance). Then position it where the plant will get plenty of light but not in direct full sun, to avoid creating too much heat from the greenhouse effect. As the apple ages, it produced ethylene gas which induces the plant to create a fruit, which will grow to become as large as the pineapples you buy in stores. Note that after you pick the fruit for eating, the plant will eventually die -- but not before it has produced one or more baby plants, each of which in two years will provide your next crop of pineapples. I lock my car simply because it pulls in the wing mirrors which I think helps the people parking next to me. Are car parking slots getting smaller? Sure seems that way! If I can help it, I do not carry a purse to the grocery. I put my drivers license and a credit card in one pocket of my pants and the key fob in the other pocket. The closest TJ to me is more than an hour and a half away. I might throw a cooler in the car and go twice a year or so. I’m like a kid in a candy store buying stuff I don’t need! I have 2 packages of the puff pastry in my freezer now. Bought it only because I had heard how good it was. I guess I need to find a use for it since I will soon be without a freezer. I’m giving it to DD and DSIL for the 1/2 cow they are buying. @ratherbesewing, regarding TJ cheese…at all costs avoid the low fat Brie! I somehow picked it up by mistake and didn’t notice until I got home. If you have an old rubber ball, just gnaw on it; same texture and taste!

Lars, I have three T.J. around me, 5 minutes, 15 minutes and one I pass by every day on my way to work.

I have to check it out.

BTW, my Yuzu tree has 10 little oranges (marble size). Going to look for recipes to use Yuzu.

My Yuzu tree also has fruit, but I have not counted how many. I also have a bottle of Yuzu juice that I have not yet opened.

Yesterday I went to TJ's and bought two pineapple plants. I'm not sure how much sun to give them - the pineapple plantations I've seen were growing in full sun in the tropics, but when I put my other pineapple plant in full sun, the leaves seemed to get a bit burned, and so I put it in partial shade. The tag with the plant said "bright light" but also indicated that it could be grown indoors if you are not in zones 9-11. I put one of the new plants in full sun (see below) and the other one in partial shade, next to the other pineapple bromeliad. I will move the one in full sun if it starts to get burned.

Gal at work heard you could grow them from the top of a fresh pineapple after it has been cut off. She gave it a try and sure enough it sprouted roots and became a plant for her. Farmer's wife so she has some skill in growing things but I don't think she had to do anything special.

I'd probably use some rooting hormone... about $3 for a jar containing a lifetime supply at Wallyworld garden section.

I love house plants that produce something edible... hot peppers, rosemary being my favorites so far.
