How long does it take for fruit trees to become established?
Comments (4)So much depends on your local weather and soil, not to mention the tree type. Where I live, I have sandy loam soils and a virtually rainless summer. However, the winter and spring rains reliably saturate the soil to field capacity. This soil drains well but there is a reliable source of moisture at 18 inches deep and below. Not lots of moisture, but enough for plants to draw on, and it gets replaced constantly by capillary/wicking action from deeper below. This is how our wild blackberries grow foliage and juicy berries with no rain. Not to mention the trees and other perennials. I generally water my newly planted trees liberally for the first year, less for the second year, and maybe a bit on the third year. None thereafter. It's quite possible I'm overdoing it, but I figure better safe than sorry....See MoreWill PineApple plants die after fruiting?
Comments (7)Yes after fruiting the pine apple plants and all of them die! But you may observe that before dying that plant will set some buds just under the fruit and one single cown on top of the fruit. This crown may be planted and in one year you will have a juice fruit. But you must give the plant tropical hollydays on a resort in a Caribean Island. If you live in a cold place or if you live where bananas and papayas won´t grow give up and buy them on syrup and canned. Monocarpic plant die after blooming. Agaves and most bromeliads are bye-bye plants that do not anouce life by blooming but say farwell to life. Everything must be started again and again. If you treat them correctely, if you do your best sooner they will die ´cause sooner they will bloom. Monocarpic plants bring the flowers to their own funeral. This is nothing if the plant is an Aechmea a small one but when it is a Alcantarea imperialis weighting more than 250 kg or a quarter of a ton...humm then you will need a crane to get rid of the rotting death body. Monocarpic is a good plant to teach us tha life and death run together like horse and cariage...If you keep monocarpic plants you are bound to face death and deal with it sooner or later. Unhappily some of the juiciest and tastiest plants are so and also some of the prettiest....See MoreHow long for a Mango tree (from seedling) to set fruit?
Comments (23)There are tall growing varieties and there are not so tall growing ones. Probably your best course of action is to let it grow as tall as possible to get a thickened trunk then cut it very low. That way you should get a number of side shoots/branches. If you cut it early with a thin trunk you're likely to get fewer branches. Having it up against a fence reduces the area branches have to spread out and is what promotes a taller tree. If you had a grafted tree those don't grow as tall as the ungrafted ones....See MoreHow long do tomatoes take to fruit from seed?
Comments (6)I though this was answered in your previous post about direct seeding tomatoes but you can look up any variety name and get its DTM - days to maturity - for an estimate. But that #of days is from the date of transplant not from seed planting. On average it takes 6-8 weeks for a seed to reach transplant size, another 4-5 weeks to set its first fruit, and another 70-90 days for that fruit to ripen, depending on the variety. So from transplant 3-4 months, but from seed, anywhere from 4-6 months. That's why nobody direct seeds them. Plus tomatoes will only set fruit within a certain temperature and humidity range so the goal for many is to get them planted, blooming and setting fruit before the severe heat of summer comes on.
