the neighbors cast iron plant new growth has turned brown. do we think this might be too much water?

any more details? Old growth okay, no browning or spotting? New growth browning; is it the tips, margins, midrib out, softened water (NaCl or KCl), recent fertilization or amendment, etc? Is it getting too much direct sun? Inside/outside pot/ground?

They're called cast iron because they are tough buggers so first look to any aggressive changes that the tender new growth can't tolerate like the hardened old growth. If nothing much has changed and you feel it may be getting too much water, certainly decrease the watering amount and monitor the new growth. If it's getting direct sun, try shading it for a while. Hard to say much more without more details.

thanks, sorry, I guess you would need more info. These are all in the ground. they have like 15 plants, pretty much in the shade and all plants have this. the old growth looks ok. the new growth is all brown. adding picture.

I don't reccomend sceduled maintainance of sewer line,mechanical or chemical. Without doubt both work but only prolong the misery if indeed there are large roots. Chemicals are also envioromentaly irresponsible. I do have a suggestion that might save money and take maintainance off the table. Since you are digging up part of the line anyhow,get an estimate for "relining"the intire line from house to city. It's a proceecure where each end is dug up and a seamless linner pulled into place effectivly sealing the system.

I am delighted to announce that both the original aspidistra plant and the offshoot I planted in a different pot are exhibiting new growth. For the record, I put them in a north facing window where they receive light but not direct light, give them one cup of water every 12-13 days, and left them alone. It seems July is the growing season for these plants, because it is also around this time last year that they put out new leaves. As for your yellowing Sans2014, I'm not sure what's causing it but I did find a pretty good site here where they may answer your question: http://www.ourhouseplants.com/plants/aspidistra From reading that site, it seems your problem could be caused by too cold temps (unlikely in July), too frequent repotting, or most likely overwatering. I water mine every 12-13 days and this is in July in Las Vegas, where temps in my apartment can reach 90 if i turn the A/C off before going to work. If you leave in a cooler climate, I wouldn't water it more than every two weeks, maybe even less.

Thank you so much mari_t232 for your kind offer to go hunting for some cuttings (lol) for me. A neighbor just last week gave me his big old pot of arrowheads, they were in bad shape you know all leggy and scraggly and mostly dried out. After I cleaned it up, I asked him would he like the old plant back and I'll just keep some of the cuttings he said no way he didn't like the way it grew and for me to keep it. So I have been enjoying watching my new plant grow. Russ1023 sent me a variety of Pothos and Philodendron cuttings and they are all doing beautifully. Your living in Florida those arrowheads must grow like weeds in I guess your garden? There is one other cutting I'm looking for that would be PASSION VINE. Before I had to give my old one away it flowered all through the winter here in a south facing window, no fruits just beautiful flowers. Marina at this time I have ran out of flower pots and I an using just about anything that I can turn into a flower pot ( jars, cups, decorative cans, plastic drinking cups, baby shoes for succulents he also gave me some Sempervivum hens and chicks). I was looking for a variegated cast iron plant cutting, then a family member was coming from visiting family in Georgia he brought be a small clump of it, and boy was I surprised and over joyed not so much overjoyed by the plant but the thoughtfulness of the gift. If they're newly planted it's probably transplant shock and they'll outgrow it.

They are definitely tough plants and survive just about anything, but they do develop ugly foliage if they are stressed by too much sun, not enought moisture, or too much wind (shredding the leaves). They are an evergreen plant, so they do not shed off dead/dying foliage and I find that, regardless of the cause, it is necessary to remove brown/dying foliage and allow new leaves to grow.
