How much sun does Cleodendrum unganese need?

This plant was received at a plant swap last year (thank you!) and has grown wonderfully well!

It had a few of those beautiful blue butterfly looking blooms in the spring, but none since.

It is in the shade of a pecan tree simply because it was the most convenient place to put it when moving it out of the green house, but I'm wondering if it needs more sun to bloom well.

This is about as much as it gets all day ...

What is your experience with it?

Mine bloomed in heavy shade but was much happier in full sun. They are not salt tolerant LOL! It was another victim of Ike.

Roselee, mine was in full sun and bloomed almost continuously from May through Oct., but it didn't survive last winter.

Partial sun usually means the plant can't handle the strongest rays in the middle of the day, from about 10 am to about 3 pm.

Both are right. In the northern states and Canada, it can take full sun. Just make sure it can withstand your zone. I am not clear on the zones where it can be grown as some plant nurseries & universities claim Zone 4 while others (www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com & other nurseries) claim even Zone 2. In the southern states, like Texas/Georgia/etc, it must have afternoon shade or the leaves will suffer from sunscald as summer approaches. And yes, Annabelle probably would grow in full shade (if that is what you meant) but bloomage might suffer. The blooms may be smaller than normal or fewer; if planted in dense shade, the shrub may end up with nice dark green leaves and no blooms at all. However, I have never done that or heard of someone who has tried that with Annabelle.

In the southern states, you need to shield them from the sun by planting them where they will be protected from the hot summer afternoon sun. As you move further northward in the map, you will be able to plant in sunnier spots, to the point of being in full sun (> 6 hours) in the northern states! In Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida and Texas, we have to keep them in "part shade". The definition of that term means 4 hours of sun or less. For example: my plants are in part shade during the summer because the sun shines directly over them from around 6:30am through 10am-ish. Growth is a function of many factors. The amount of sun is just one. The ones that you planted in the fall produced those flower buds starting in August/September, more or less. Conditions at the time in the nursery may not have been conducive to produce many flowers. Only the flower buds to be developed in Fall 2007 for Spring 2008 will actually reflect conditions in your yard. If they bloom poorly then, take appropriate action. Until then, do not transplant them. Instead... Fertilize twice a year with manure or cottonseed meal. Mulch adequately (3-4") and maintain the soil moist, specially during the flower bud developing months. As for the Ladies In Red, I need more information since I am unclear as to whether they were planted at the same time in the fall? Are you not getting any bloomage? How was your weather since Fall? How much fertilizer do they get? How much water do they get in fall? winter? What hours do they get sun? Luis

Well, it's kind of tough to start some plants right now, but okra, peanuts, sweet potatoes love the heat. Peppers and eggplant can take the heat. Realistically, July is the time most people put their gardens into hibernation and then they start their seeds indoors/out of the sun in the next month or so for fall planting. Love the blue butterfly clerodendron, roselee! I planted one in the ground 2008 with a lot of sun and it bloomed for months in 2008 & 2009. But up here in far NW Austin it died back so hard in the winters that it's now smaller than when originally planted.
After a lot of hunting around, I recently bought a second plant already in bloom and have it in a container on the patio. It will need more watering in a pot, but I can bring it in for winter.

Thank you so much for your replies! I'll be moving it into more sun today.

I'm sorry to hear y'all lost yours, but it seems a replacement will grow pretty fast. Just in case we have another hard winter down the road I'll be keeping in a pot so I can move it to the greenhouse for winter.

I bought one last fall. I was told it needed a warm place but also a little afternoon shade. I planted it next to a south-facing privacy fence in a spot that gets a little afternoon shade from a tree. Miraculously, with a lot of mulch, it survived the harsh winter.

I have wondered if it gets enough shade, but it seems to be happy so far. Overall it's currently about 18" tall, with a couple 2.5' branches working up a trellis.

Thanks patriotizm, that does help me to know it is fairly well placed for the moment. I moved it two weeks ago to where it full sun most of the day, but it gets some late afternoon shade. It has grown considerably and has not wilted at all which tells me it is pretty happy. No blooms yet though.

Roselee, I just realized that my clerodendrum isn't a unganese, but a thomsoniae. Hope my info is still applicable, but I don't know whether it is or not. =(

Scientific names are so confusing...

It's even worse than you thought, patriotizm!
Some sites are now using the alternate name Rotheca myricoides 'Ugandense'.
