If you have webs you might have spider mites. Spray them with some soapy water then rinse it off before it gets hot outside. The sudden onset of heat might be the problem. Mine aren't looking so great all of a sudden too. Bird netting will keep them from pecking if you support it on something to hold it away from the plant. I saw a squirrel digging in one of my pots today, lol.

You might want to add some corn meal around each plant, this should help with the black spot on the tomotoes. We had the bird netting and it worked. The birds actually learned how to get under the net, but it really slowed them down. We still got our share of tomatoes, they were just trying to make a living. Barbra

If the bottoms of your tomatoes are brown, it's probably blossom end rot. Tomatoes need calcium so this year I added a few calcium pills to the soil when I planted my tomato plants. So far no blossom end rot here. There's a tomato forum where the expert tomato people hang out.

The webs on marigolds sounds like a bad infestation of spider mites as the poster above suggested. They are probably on the tomatoes as well. Look at the bottom of a leaf with a magnifying glass and you will see the tiny little mites moving around, or tap the leaf above a white sheet of paper and look for them. Spraying the plants a couple of times with a seaweed solution does a great job on getting rid of spider mites. Blast the leaves hard with it so it gets underneath. I use my trusty Gilmour hose end sprayer for this job.

I use wedding favor bags! I buy them for 3 or 6 for .99 and reuse them each year.
I would not even care what my leaves like as it will be so hot that it won't matter. You just gotta get the fruit set before it gets to hot.

The little bags are a great idea. I saw that done over in Korea only on a much larger scale. I had wondered how they could have such perfect looking fruit-absolutely flawless peaches, apples and pears. Then one day on a bus headed for another town I saw a family in their orchard and they were putting little cloth bags on each and every fruit on the trees. Some of the trees had at least 100 cloth bags already tied onto the fruits. It was an inspiring sight. And the fresh fruit from the open markets there was wonderful.

The birds don't attack tomatoes that much until the fruit starts to redden. I pick mine at first blush and let them ripen out of the sun inside the house. I have no experience with rodent problems.

As far as the browning on the plants, they probably have a fungal disease like early blight. You can use a fungicide, early in the morning or just take care of the plants long enough to ripen the fruit and then get rid of them---it's tough to get many new fruits(some small-fruited and cherries being the exception) to set after June or with the temps we have been having.

The plants don't care much for 100+ temps. Water them deep at least once, probably twice a week. From the beginning of fruitset to ripening takes around 40 days. The fully-grown green stage can last a couple weeks.

I vote with Pete as I'm competing with early blight here. The random heavy rains aren't helping, and I've lost large maters to awful splitting from the deluges. Right now I'm managing to stay just ahead of the early blight....but I think the plants are about done producing anyway. It's too hot and the blooms are dropping off.

I also pick mine when they blush and let them ripen in a window. The mockingbird sits on the kids' swingset (about ten feet from my raised bed) and watches for a ripe one. I also have a possum scratching around in the middle of the night...and he apparently likes to eat jalapenos. I have only gotten one out of three or four. Who knew?

Growing tomatoes down here is a race to the finish...I'm lucky to get this many tomatoes before tragedy strikes. I'm still hoping to stay ahead of blight and maybe be able to baby them through to August and see if I can't get a few more in the fall. Either that or I will get tired of sick and gross looking plants and pull them and baby the basil instead. :-)

I saw them using paper lunch sacks on the quava fruits in Hawaii. They fold it around the fruit and hold it on the limb with a clothes pin.

The Wedding favor bags really work! White organza is easy to see into and great for air circulation. I'm watching tomatoes ripen rather than wonder who swiped 'em

Dollar Tree has a wedding section. They have some large wine bags that are great for long clusters of tomatoes. They also have bride and groom bags that are good for sinle large tomatoes.

The Party STore had mid size bags with a square paper bottom...easy to remove and they are 6 for about $8
