New hosta beds....am I insane?
Comments (5)I am on the other side of the fence too. I had the side fences replaced for privacy but the back one faces an overgrown drainage ditch so I left that one down just using the hurricane fence. I have always kept about 3' cut back and over the years have dumped my grass clippings ect behind the now gone woden fence. I added a bird feeder in my yard and now I have a preserve for the birds who are spoiled. I have started adding the plants that did not do well, some extras and the ones I may not have liked. This winter I am adding Crepe Mertle out there. Over the fence is great! No one is behind me and it is the citys. In 25 years they have cleaned it once....See MoreAnyone grow Lavender in DFW area?
Comments (22)I've had success growing French lavender, but there are a few rules! First, amend the soil where you'll be planting it. Mix some fresh in-ground potting soil, a handful of gypsum, about 1/2 a cup of Azomite, and a handful of Perlite together, then add that mixture to the existing dark gray Dallas clay. I would buy small plants instead of starting from seed, so after you've amended the soil, simply plant your new plants and water well. Water daily until it takes root. As for choosing a location, it should be planted somewhere shady. I have mine on either side of a bench that sits under a huge tree. The smell...you can't be angry when you sit amongst the lavender!!!...See Morewhite corian/solid surface--I am crazy?
Comments (65)My countertops are solid surface that isn't as thick as Corian, but is the same kind of material. It may be a local name because when I google it, the fabricator I used is the only one that comes up under that name. I used this material because they had a blue that I liked . . . I didn't really like the Corian blues, and in my color scheme -- cream cabinets, yellow walls, blue counters -- it was important to me to get the blue color right. My integrated sink is a lighter blue, speckled. The integrated sink is one of the things I like best . . . absolutely NO place for yucch to collect. It almost never looks dirty, but when it gets stained, a quick swish with soft scrub does the job. To solve the problem of not being able to set hot pans on the countertop, I had the area next to the stove inset with tile the same color as the cabinets. I also have one long serving counter done in the same tile so the area by the stove doesn't look out of place. It has worked perfectly . . . I'm thinking my next kitchen will have the same thing. I've liked my solid surface counters a lot. My make-up table is the same product in matte white. I get lipstick and other makeup on it regularly, and just soft-scrub and it comes off. You know the pitfalls -- you may be cleaning more often -- but if you love the look, it will be worth it....See MoreTell Me The Truth - Am I Crazy?
Comments (25)Newhomebuilder Thanks! Why don't you try it on a small window? Or get some cling vinyl and try your hand at that? If you like what you make you can stick it up and build the rest of the window around it. I have a cling stuck to my sliding glass door -- keeps folks from trying to walk through the glass. Patricia43 Thank you! Did you have to have the entire piece of glass removed? I've read that in time the color can migrate into the glass as glass is really a liquid, but I don't know. We're supposed to be able to just scrape these off if we change our minds and hopefully they wouldn't leave a trace behind. To me being "artsy" has always been a matter of wanting precisely what I want and it doesn't exist and I can't afford to hire it done. So I figure out how to make it myself. Necessity is the mother of invention, or maybe poverty is - haha. Jenn I'm glad you answered. I've book marked your site for future ideas as your home is so lovely. Thanks for your kind words! Why don't you try playing with the Gallery Glass? I'm glad you said go ahead on the antiques in my tract home. I did in my last house. I think it was a surprise when people came in the front door as it didn't look like the outside of the house. I don't know why I feel more awkward with it in this house. So much of my furniture for the other house was bought for it and doesn't seem to fit here. But I guess I'm going for it anyway. I wish I could make my big bulky bedroom furniture disappear and start over but I'm not quite sure how to accomplish that. Cactuscatie Oh, I'm delighted that you're feeling inspired now! That's great and I hope you'll start a new thread one of these days soon and give us some pictures. I'd really like to see what you're working with. If you like my window, you can just grab a piece of glass from a picture frame from a thrift shop and start practicing. You may find you're a lot more crafty than you thought and it feels good to say "I did that!" You have SO many windows to do I don't envy you, but I'd love to see what you end up doing. I think if you post pics folks can post pics back to give you more ideas that are geared to your individual decor and colors, too. As far as heavy curtains in Victorian homes, yes in cooler climates they used the heavier ones in winter, but they had just lace and lighter treatments for the hot summer days... so you can go either way you want and still be right in step with the period. Those big heavy treatments weren't for year 'round....See Moremikeandbarb
