Just a word to the wise. Sometimes we are in too much of a rush to clean up the "dead" stuff. I had transplanted two red buds and two crepe myrtles at the same time last fall. One of each leafed out like it was going out of style, the others just seem to sit. Did not look like anything at all was happening. Same with a burr oak that I planted at the same time. NOTHING was happening.

Two or three weeks after these others leafed still nothing. Then, a day or two ago I noticed that both of the slow ones had green showing. YIPEE!!! The red bud is still taking its time but the CM is covered in small leaves now.

I have the same thought about some pyracantha that a fellow gardener gave me. They look dead brown and she says be patient. They may still end up coming to life.

I cut down some yaupon holly last fall to clear out some room for one of the above redbuds. Later, I wanted to transplant some rough leaf dogwood seedlings and used one of the yaupon limbs as a very loose support. The support is growing. Now what do you think about that? Looked neat to me.

Mike, you are so right. One of the pyracanthas that I dug up for you looked dead, while the other one is growing. Today, I noticed new growth on the one I thought was dead, so I will still have TWO pyracanthas to bring you if you still want them.

Mike, I have done that before, using limbs for stakes or whatever and they rooted but on the other hand, I have tried to root things and well not being able to, lol
Last year when I was cutting a brug back and getting the leaves off that the hoppers had ruined I dropped a small piece of limb and instead of picking it up, I just crammed it in the ground. I saw it today with leaves on it, lol
Carrie has brought me cuttings before and I couldn't get them to root, lol

Catrose - I think that "rule of thumb" is meant to apply to climbing roses only. I have seen it in my garden lots of times - the first growth on a new baby climber is small, short canes that sometimes go sideways, and look pathetic. Then they just sit there. Then in a year or two you get the first real climbing cane, which is 3-4 times larger in diameter than those first babies, and goes up like an elevator. I totally agree about the fact that pics of pretty blossoms are not helpful when trying to decide about a rose. If I cannot find pics of the entire bush on HMF, I just google it - you would be amazed how many pictures show up. If that does not work, I ask on here, and some kind person usually will have a picture to post. Jackie

It is 2 different situations. Bottom watering by sitting the containers in an inch or so of water for a short period of time is what is recommended. Then remove them from the water. The gravel discussion is only for those few plants that either a) require excess humidity or b) will be left unattended for a period of time, say 2-5 days of vacation. The use of gravel plays a minimal, if any role, in average garden seed starting. Lighting as discussed in the How to get started FAQ and the Lighting FAQ is 99% of the time only fluorescent ie: 4' 2 tube shop lights. There are many discussions here about this that the forum search at the bottom of the page will pull them up along with pics that many of us have posted of our light set-ups. That is all that is needed for seed starting. LEDs and special grow lights or special colors only come into play when one is growing full grown plants inside under lights and need to encourage blooming etc. Mirrored sides??? Never heard of anyone using them yet millions start their seeds without them. Simple aluminum foil, the $2 mylar camping blankets, even white paint can all help with light reflection but the benefits are nominal and none of them are required for any reason. Well water is no problem. It is hard and chlorine free. It is artificially softened or some city water that can cause problems. Most packaged seed starting mix, what the majority use, and potting mixes are already sterile when you buy them. They are sold that way. If you mix your own out of non-sterile ingredients or use old mix then some recommend first treating it with boiling water. Seed starting can be as simple or as complex as you or the folks selling equipment for it want to make it. As with many things in life, simple is best. :) Dave

The shelves.... We originally wanted a 30" x 12" niche but when we opened up the wall, there was a septic vent smack in the middle. We decided on 2 niches instead, I wassn't about to mess around with those pipes. When figuring the tile layout for the design I wanted, our friend suggested that we oversize the niches so the tile would lay out nice - he suggested 18 x 18 niches and I freaked. But the 12x12 would not have been big enough for the 3 kids and all their stuff. He suggested a granite shelf on the bottom and then one above it to make a shelf for soap, razors, etc. We talked about the length and width of the shelves, but never the depth. When I picked up the shelves from the granite fabricator, I freaked - they were 1 1/4" thick just like the countertop was being made. Friend said, don't worry, they would be perfect. They are. I honestly wouldn't want them any thinner. When he laid the tile, the bottom shelf slid in tightly and then he cut the bullnose on the side and the back tiles so the top granite shelf sits on the cut tiles all around. The tiles abouve the top shelf are full 6 x 6 and as you can see, we have enough height for those huge oversized shampoo and conditioner bottles. There is kerdi behind so no worries about water issues and they were all caulked and all afterwards. Being the over-emotional one, I figured this design that had been in head my for 2 years was ruined when I saw how thick those shelves were, but I wouldn't want them any different. I think they 'fit' the design perfectly as is. And I just love the niches. Before, the kids had a tiny corner shelf and bottles were all over the place, now there is enough room for everything plus space for guests when they are here.

Wow! That is real - deal thinking -cap on engineering- 5 year all in warranty and designed for 20 years. Not denying Miele also has some real - deal engineering and I would admit Miele probably even a better build but not a tank like Speed Queen. Miele- excellent but too small for the 120 volt one, and quite a bit of money - I noted comment about doing laundry all weekend. It was at least $500 more and it was tiny. So it was out. Electrolux - suitable machine no doubt about it- more features- very easy to use controls- unlike 'guessing at kind of' on the SQ.. And Elctrolux has alight in it -kind of neat! - and steam clean - an excellent machine. and could be installed for at or about $1,200 all in. I did the same. I staked something in a pot with a vitex limb. Which is how I happen to still have a vitex that came from my MIL.

Carrie, bring them on.
I had heard of things like that happening before, the stick leafing out, but never had it happen to me. This stick had been cut a few days before and was almost an inch in diameter so you wouldn't normally think of it as new wood.
It was neat to me.

Mike, we missed you at the swap! Be sure to come next time (assuming there will be a next time)! My Barbados Cherries are finally putting out a few leaves. Don't know if the entire plants will return, but it's starting. Poor babies, I didn't feel good that night it got to 20Â° and didn't even throw a sheet over them. That stick in the ground thing didn't even work with me for willow.

I've seen this happen too!!

My Mom had a fair sized plumeria tree in her garden, which needed to be removed for some construction. They cut it down, but my Mom liked the shape of the tree enough to want to keep the bare trunk/branches as a decoration in the living room. After a week or two of sitting on hard floor (no soil, no water, nothing!) the tree started sprouting leaves at the top.. To me, it was nothing short of a miracle!! Mom was so intruiged by this tree's will to live, she replanted it in a different spot in the garden. It's a bit shorter that it was before but it's been doing fine for the past 7-8 years :-)

In Dec.'02 in NE FL I had a potted 10 yr. old ficus with huge sentimental value that got whacked by heavy freezes when I was outta town for several weeks. In March I cut the trunks back to stumps, hoping to stimulate growth. Didn't happen. So, I kept the stumps in the pot, unable to trash them (I'd already gotten a cutting from a cutting I"d given someone years earlier that had grown into a huge tree, but. . . .I just couldn't toss it.) It came back to life in July! And quickly grew back int it's 8 ft. beauty!
