fire ants are back and I'm wondering...

hey all, I've seen a lot of posts here about using orange oil for fire ants. I have several fire ant mounds going on--and all in containers with flowering plants. I'm worried about using orange oil since one time it burned the leaves of another plant (I also get a skin reaction to it). Would it harm the roots if I just spray it or pour it on the soil?

In one of the containers I also have a battle going on the last two days between ladybugs, fire ants and aphids on a milkweed plant. I'm also wary of putting anything in this container that would hurt the ladybugs as I need them (or the few monarchs that have been showing up lately)!

(I tried sugar and diatomaceous earth but they keep mounding back up again.)
