I'm sorry but i think weed and feed product is one of the worst products for the lawn. it contain too much poison to kill a few weeds. It doesn't even work because of the timing for weed growth and grass growth.

You just answered your own question why you're having weed problems. You are ruining your soil with those poison. Read about plant succession. Weeds thrives in poor soil. Trees thrive in much improved soil after all the years of natural soil amendments from the plants themselves.

In the other word, switch to organic program. No more of toxic chemical products of any kind....

Just keep mowing them.

I have to mow weeds frequently since I mow about 4 acres, but eventually, the grass crowds them out or the sun bakes them, but most of them do go away sooner or later.

What kind of post-emergent organic program is there that will keep the grass alive while killing the weeds

Is it simply a matter of taking a jar of white vinegar out with you and using a dropper or something to get the weeds but not the grass?

No such thing. You'd have to pull them out. Weeds be gone might be suitable because it does not get on the ground and destroy soil biology like weed and feed fertilizer does. I do nothing but mow high (st augustine) and water deeply only when needed. I don't have very many weeds at all. I fertilize every 3 months with soybean meal that I get at animal feed store. I apply 15lbs per 1000 sqft. The bag is 50lbs. I pay 11.50 each.

Actually, I didn't want to use weed and feed, but the dollarweed is taking over my st. augustine. If I use the soybean meal, set my mower to my summer height, that should choke out the dollarweed? We had a really good season last summer. I only had to water 2 times because we were blessed with plenty of rain. I think that is what made the dollarweed explode, moisture and heat. I appreciate any help on naturally killing this st. augusting choking weed.

I like my St. Augustine lawn better than the Bermudagrass that was previously there. The St. Augustine has crowded out weeds and other grass and has filled in very nicely. I also mow it fairly tall, especially when temps are really hot. I also found that my manual push mower makes a much nicer lawn than my previous power mower which tore up the grass pretty bad with its self propelled wheels. Our new push mower cuts the St. Augustine with a nice sharp blade for a nice even looking lawn.

I may be in the minority but I don't care if I have weeds. I let them blend in with st augustine grass. For some reason, they help grass perform better.

Weeds help the grass perform better? I have heard of clover putting nitrogen back into the soil, but never "weeds help the st. augustine perform better"
You don't understand, I have a MASSIVE outbreak of dollarweed. It totally choked out a large proportion of my country house's yard. It took me 2 years to get it under control. My house in town had one of the best yards in town when it came to NO WEEDS. I even got rid of the bahia and started a neighborhood bahia control group. Now my neighbors are enjoying a bahia free yard and many in town are coming around to ask what we used. You may like weeds including stickers, but I don't. I like walking in my yard barefoot. I am going to use Image, strongly mixed and kill this dollarweed one way or the other. I have also decided to put down triple 13 or the fertilizer my sister uses or that organic product listed above if I can find it. I hope tsc carries it.

Remember I said to read about plant succession. Weeds exist in the first place because the soil is in poor shape. They thrive on high nitrate level. It is seen in the early plant succession type. If you try and reduce nitrate level, weeds will not thrive. Perhaps your soil have high level of nitrate and usually synthetic fertilizer will cause that. Anyway, weeds themselves improve the soil over time leading other plants to take over and keep improving the soil leading to different plants and so on. That's the purpose of organic program. Reduce nitrate level in the soil. I've used molasses to speed up microbes growth to suck up excess nitrate in the soil and hold them in the form of protein waiting to be released back into the root zone.

Don't be silly about the weeds. I don't like some weeds like stickers but most are tolerable and blend in with st augustine just fine as long as the lawn is mowed regularly.

If you want to poison your lawn, that's your choice. I can do it without any chemicals because I understand how soil biology works and why things happens like that and I take advantage of the knowledge to control weeds. I don't want mt kid or dog to be rolling around in poison infested lawn. That's just my choice.

I would rather not use chemicals. Do you think I need a soil sample taken to find out just what is in the soil? Last year was the first year I used w/f on this lawn. As far as I know, it hasn't had anything put on it in years, so what you are saying makes some sense. What is the height you set your lawn mower to?
I use a push mower for my lawn. It does a way better job than any riding mower plus it is great exercise.

So what would you reccommend for a Bermudagrass lawn with heavy nutsedge and henbit infestation other than Image?

In addition to mowing often to remove the heads of the weeds before they have a chance to go to seed, you can improve the soil health by adding organic amendments such as zeolite and compost. Improving the health of the soil will do more to eliminate weeds than any amount of poison you pour into the earth.

If you have never used zeolite you will be very surprised in the long-term effects it will have on your soil. Zeolite is a naturally occuring mineral that has a variety of applications and is available at most garden centers that sell amendments.

Zeolite reduces the amount of water needed for irrigation by up to 35% and holds moisture and nitrogen in the growth zone. The held nitrogen is plant accessible but not water-soluble, reducing the nitrogen fertilizer requirement. This not only improves plant nutrition, but protects the quality of ground water since 30 to 35% of most nitrogen fertilizers leach through the growth zone and go into the aquifer.

By using zeolite and regular light applications of compost, your soil will improve and your grass and flower bed plantings will thrive. Weeds do not do as well in good soil, or what we would consider to be 'good' soil, but cultivated plantings require 'good' soil to survive.

Earthworms are attracted to healthy soil and will further improve the tilth and nutrients through their own natural activity. If you dig up a cubic foot of your soil and find at least 12 earthworms in it, then you have reasonably healthy soil.

Microbial activity in your soil ceases when you add poison to kill weeds, because it will also kill the microbes. And microbes are essential to plant, earthworm, and soil health. And just like those nitrogen fertilizers, much of the poison will leach through the soil and into the aquifer. Now you don't really want to do all that, do you?
