Too late for a cold crop?

Although I was raised with a garden most of my life, I really never paid any attention to cold vs. warm crops etc. This year is my first Texas garden and I am wondering if it is too late to plant lettuce, onions, and carrots? The cooperative extension says that these plants do best in cool weather but the nurseries still have them out for sale. I know Texas can get hot very quickly and wonder if the middle of March is too late to plant. Any suggestions would be helpful.
