What causes excess moisture

I am new to this. I was away and left my bin alone for three weeks. I came back to a very wet (puddles in the bottom collection tray, very wet compost in upper trays) and tiny grey bugs on the top layer , not to mention a million fruit flies in my kitchen. I have read all the posts and see how to reduce the moisture, and how important it is to reduce moisture (add cardboard, leave things open, aerate)...but what I don't know is what caused this excessive moisture when I don't think I did anything different than usual - same foods, same bedding.

And - do I need to do anything about these little grey/brown bugs that look like a layer of dust in my leachate?

Thanks so much. I do enjoy my worms, and generally find this "relaxing" but I am very concerned.

I have just had something similar happen to me. In fact, my worms tried to kill themselves. I don't think Ive got many live ones left, and I wasn't gone all that long.

My best guess is that I put in too much fruit instead of balancing fruit (banana, peach, apple, tomato) with stuff that has a lower moisture content (carrots, orange peel, celery.

The only bright spot is that I poured off a very nice amount of casting tea. But I think it killed my worms. Carmania

The moisture had to come from the food you put in. If you were planning to not look in on them for 3 weeks, did you feed too much?

The bugs shouldn't be in your leachate...mainly because you really shouldn't have leachate. It's just excess moisture.

Again, all that is is leachate, and all leachate is is too much water. Brown because it's leached through unprocessed worm compost, but water. It has no redeeming qualities other than as a drink for your plants.

Paulns, After watching your thread it occurred to me that your answer could be found at the very site you referred me to a short time ago. From the Journey To Forever website: "In addition to carefully recorded field observations, an extensive range of sample analyses (soil and products) was carried out by the consultant bio-chemist, Dr. R.F. Milton. These included analyses for available plant nutrients in every field every month for a period of over 10 years." Since there has been a study that specifically targets "soil tests" every month for over a 10 (ten) year period, one would think this would be proof enough of the validity concerning the outcome of using an organic gardening technique. Nonetheless, the study then goes on to state: "On the Organic Section, which received no fertilizers, the fluctuation was so marked that, for example, in the field with the highest humus content and the longest history of no chemicals, as much as 10 times more available phosphate has been recorded in the growing period of the year than in the dormant period. Potash and nitrogen followed the same general pattern. It was clear, from the fact of the closed cycle, that this seasonal release of minerals could only have been brought about by biological agencies, and it appears to be a natural action-pattern of a biologically active soil." This is the same exact finding you are experiencing with your garden. To claim it is a "fluke" or the result of an "unreliable soil test" is a bit silly to be kind. Since you were the one to point this site out, I was sure you had harvested this information for your own knowledge base. Might I suggest, when you get the time, to review the link below and go about the business of growing your garden with limited concern (when weather permits of course). Excessive small thorns by themselves are not a sign of any disease. If that was the case, all rugosas would be diseased. Excessive small thorns along with strange new growth, witches broom, and rubbery stems can indicate rose rosette disease but herbicide drift can have similar symptoms. Some roses just have lots of small thorns.

You need to look at the construction of the attic ventilation system above the insulation. You indicated they put the channels in and left a gap for airflow, prior to insulating the rafter bay. In order to get condensation in the attic, it takes two things, Presence of moisture and a condensing surface. Obviously, there is moisture present, and the source will need to be identified, but what baffles me, is that a conditioned attic (heated) remains cool enough to have a condensing surface on the heated side of the insulation. Have you looked into the insulation and up onto the baffle that was installed? It is my guess that by installing the baffles continuous from top to bottom, that they possibly did more harm than good, particularly if the channels are continuous or sealed. They certainly have a ventilation channel, but you need to consider the reasoning for that ventilation channel. Attic ventilation first and foremost (at least in my heating climate)is to relieve the attic of moisture. The other reason is to relieve the attic of excessive heat in the summer time. With the insulation at the rafter level instead of the attic floor, they will need to have a continuous(sealed) vapor barrier or a dual purpose air barrier, such as drywall (ADA Approch). Kraft facing is not an adequate vapor barrier.retarder, in this application. Couple this with warming the attic temp, should alleviate the problem, but dont do it by simply warming the attic without the sealed vapor barrier or you will just drive the moisture deeper into the insualtion system. With the types of temperature differentials this winter has provided us, problems are going to arise, that didnt happen last year, irregardless of how many occupants were there last year.

Cassie A couple of points: 1. The bathroom fan has to be vented through the roof or eaves. Having it vent into the attic space can cause condensation on cold surfaces (like the vent stack or wood framing)as well as mold and other problems. 2. It could be that the drops of water are condensation on the pipe - but that wouldn't be my first guess. The pipe would have to be significantly colder than the surrounding surfaces AND the humidity would have to be very high as well. What I have seen is that the vent is typically a little warmer because of hot water usage and because it's in a heated portion of the house before it exits to the attic. If anything, the condensation should be be closer to the roof. An exception might be if you are in a very cold climate (UP in Michigan, for example). I would look for a small leak where the stack goes through the roof. It's not uncommon, especially with cast iron pipe, for that joint to leak. Cast iron pipe is rough on the outside and doesn't seal as well against a rubber boot on the roof - often they are just sealed with roofing tar - which dries out and cracks. Look for daylight around where the pipe goes through the roof. A short-term fix is roofing tar if it's leaking. A longer term fix is to cut the cast iron pipe in the attic and use PVC pipe (very smooth surface) and a new rubber boot on the roof. Join the PVC with the cast iron pipe using a Fernco fitting. Be aware that cast iron is VERY heavy.

So, excess moisture is just due to the food I put in; perhaps they need more fiber.

I do have a brown/grey "dust cover" (of tiny bugs) in what is draining out, and a cover of what looks like sawdust in the top layer of the bin. Do I need to get rid of these? What is it?

What are the "beneficial" bugs and what do they look like?

all bugs are "beneficial" - there are dozens of organisms that are a normal part of the decomposition process and avoidance of most requires maintaining certain conditions - drier is better, especially right at the surface, within the limits of what the worms need

food waste of any kind [including carrots, orange peel, celery, Carmania] has a very high water content and needs to be combined with absorbant carbon, especially some that will keep the structure open to air circulation .... if you add a 'large amount' of food waste at once then leave it, the mass will quickly become anaerobic and soon be a liquid mess to cause the problems seen

the best bet for leaving a worm bin unattended for long periods is to leave only scattered small amounts of feedstock and put the bin in the coolest location you can with a cover to slow evaporation, the worms can do fine re-processing the bedding material for a long time
