Flowers blooming too early?

I was out looking at the garden today and noticed a winecup already in bloom - just one bloom. These usually don't bloom here north of Dallas for another couple of months, so I was really surprised to see it out so early. Anyone else have things blooming earlier than they should? It must be due to these warm days, then cold days, then warm again. It is very confusing for the plants - and me!

I think it's really messing with my plants. I need to get these bare root roses out of their water buckets and into the ground asap, they are shooting off mega canes. It's supposed to be 33 degrees tonight so I have to bring them in and cover the ones I just put in ground yesterday (when it was 94 degrees out). Hopefully they don't have a hissy fit but there has got to be some ramifications to this uber confusing weather out here. The only thing that I have blooming right now is my camellia and that's supposed to be blooming right now.

My California poppies started blooming last week and they didn't bloom until late March/early April last year. I have a bunch of throwaway tulips I planted in a container and within two days of them blooming, some of them crumpled and dropped their leaves as soon as it went over 80 this weekend. I wish their show wasn't so brief. It was 98 on Sunday in my part of Austin. I wonder if winter is ever not confusing here. The only thing I really worry about are some of my roses which haven't really stopped blooming all winter and just to keep them healthy and give them a rest, I picked off all their leaves 2 weeks ago to force them to take a break.

Then again some things seem right on time... a few Bluebonnets are putting out their first buds, the sweet peas are blooming... I just wish it hadn't been so dry this fall and winter, I fear we aren't going to have many wildflowers along the highways. I am spoiled by last spring's Bluebonnet and Indian Blanket show--how glorious that was!

If it's blooming too early it might be the day length. Amaranth is a summer crop and (judging by your post dates) it just might think that fall is coming! Pinching the bloom will redirect it to vegetative growth and increasing daylight should get it growing like a weed. Let me know if I was right, since I'm posting this in late May. You already know what happened! I'm just now putting mine out! It doesn't pay to try to plant this plant until summer comes.

I'm in zone 5 Indiana. The tomatoes have been in the garden just one month (since last freeze) and now have blooms. They look very healthy (used some composted horse doo-doo) and are knee high. I hope the early blooms don't abort like they did last year!

I wouldn't want my 12" plants blooming (even though they would already be in the garden for me if they were that tall) so I would remove the blooms. How long until you can plant them in the garden? Dave

There are some thing's flowering here, a salvia and one of my daylilies have a scape on it. My tulips are near opening up but my Daffs are behind. Then I have some other things that haven't come up at all.

It is early but like you said they warm days have a lot to do with it. Oh my trees have not started budding out yet, that's how I know we'll soon have flowers.

Austinwildflower,,, I suspect the same thing you do, the lack of rain is going to put a hurting on the blue bonnets. I have a small crop of them in my backyard that I've been watering myself. So at least I'll have some to look at.

Funny story for me, I always wanted to grow lupine. SO this year I decided to do some research and find some Texas hardy lupine.

Well what do ya know, I actually had some growing in my backyard. The Texas Blue Bonnet!

I have lots of Bluebonnets blooming, and today I saw some of my California Poppies are starting. I have had Irises blooming for weeks now, even during freezes. Weird!

I noticed 3 strawberry plants with flowers today (in February???), while the daffodils and crocuses are just beginning. At my other place (near Abilene) two peach trees were in full bloom last weekend.
