My friend, Helen, sent me this photo of a spider she found in her garden. Does anyone know what kind of spider this is?

Hi Denise. I saw a spider like that a few days ago. It was in the center of it's web which was smaller, but of the same design as those of the big black and yellow garden spiders.

I'm not sure, but because of its shape and faint coloring of black and yellow I figured it was an immature form of what is commonly called a 'garden spider.'

Someone on the insect forum could probably give you a positive ID.

The first one "will" be a vine, just like the larger one, it's just green all the way through, no yellow in the leaves. It was a "break off" of my daughter's plant. Thanks for the name. Wrote it down and will put it on the pot. (That one is Petie- lol.) Oh and about re-potting my Spidy, the pot now is 28 in. round. From what I remember, it shouldn't be anymore than 2 in. larger?? If I am wrong, let me know. I'm not really afraid to re-pot it, it is just that it's so large, I don't want to break any leaves. My daughter is going to help me with that when I do it, she's pretty good with things like that. I just don't want to hurt it. When I do re-pot it, should I soak it from the bottom? Or just water it like I have been. another question?? I have some plant food. I don't know if I should put it in the same water that I mist my plant with, would that be too much food? Can you over feed? I try to mist every morning. This morning the spiderets don't look too good. Am I feeding them too much? Thanks for your advice in advance.. :)

Thank you all for this compliment. I found out on our local site....it's one of the Garden Orb Weavers (Araneus sp.) The female sometimes eats the mate after breeding....this might have happened here?

It's a Pholcid spider, sometfolks call it a daddy long legs which is misleading. Another common name is the cellar spider. Not dangerous or damaging. Take it outdoors and release it.

I love those wonderful little spiny spiders! That one's the spiny orb weaver. We called the next one Banana spider back in south carolina. Those fur bracelets give me the eebie jeebies! She's the golden silk spider. Don't know about the next one, eating the caterpillar for lunch! But the last one is the daring jumping spider.

Oh, is that what she wanted? Well, Charlotte has been a little over used so I vote for "Sweetpea Spidy" ... ;-)

But, it'll be a little easier to warm up to it as a pet if you go with something like "Fido".

Denise, I believe this is a Argiope - Argiope trifasciata. If it isn't the Argioe trifasciata, it will be a close cousin.
