A few pictures were taken on an early morning stroll through the garden and I'd like to share them with you.

All are so lucious. I love the lowly cowpen daisy sticking up its head, or is that something else?

Mara, I looked up 'cowpen daisy' and it sure does look like it, but it's "Galardia Mesa Yellow" I got off Lowes sale rack last year.

I do LOVE our Texas wildflowers. Here's a bouquet of wildflowers son Doug picked a couple of days ago from the fields around my house. The one with the orange center is a galardia, also called 'blanket flower'. What is the all yellow one with the brown center? There are lots of them right now, also lots of purple thistles...

Also I meant to post this photo that I took last evening just because I thought it was a nice shot back lit by the sun ...

Good Morning Annette, I just love these pictures! I think you did a terrific job naming them. Seems correct to me. I love the Oxeye Daisies. Daisies are among my favorite flowers. They were in my 1st bridle bouquet a l-o-n-g time ago. :) The Prairie Oxeyes are short little daisies and have tiny blooms, but lovely in their own right. I saw them in the Carolina mountains when we drove the scenic route one time. They were taller like yours. They just light up the forests with their friendly faces. Lupines are Mother's favorite flower, as you know. They grew all over the arid foothills of the Santa Margarita Mts above our home in South Calif. There were Indian paintbrush, Shooting Stars, Mission Bells, yellow Johnny-Jump-Ups, Calif. Poppies, Red Sage (red native to So. Cal and N. Mexico) and Red Monkey Flowers, to name a few. The Yellow Monkey Flowers grew in the canyon with the tall ferns and Miner's Lettuce and Johnny-Jump-ups. The Shooting Stars grew at the base of the hills just at the edge of the Live Oaks near the canyon floor. I cannot recall all the flower's names. We kids called the Red Monkey flower Monkey's Blood flowers - we had all sorts of pet names names for the wildflowers. The Shooting Stars where we lived looked like a pretty lilac flower with a Bumblebee getting nectar, so I called them Bumblebee flowers. Your pictures brings back fond memories of my childhood home. Mother will enjoy looking at your photos. Mother's entire family were wildlife and wildflower enthusiasts, as well as Rock Hounds. We would ALL go for treks up on the hills every spring. Grannie and her elder sisters and their families and all of us would hike up the hills taking only a little sandwich and a canteen of water. The older ladies all carried walking sticks or canes, and God help anyone who "accidentally" picked one of those pretty flowers. You would get a sharp thump for breaking "The Family Rules". I don't know how those old English ladies managed those steep and rocky trails (They looked like they could be sisters of Queen Elizabeth, especially my grannie). They would not allow anyone to help them either. "I can do it myself, thank you very much!", with a dour face that meant business. The incline was very steep, having to climb on hands and feet part of the way to get up to the trail. Grannie usually wore jeans, but her sisters usually wore light cotton dresses. They all wore big straw hats, tied securely under their chins. Cotton gardening gloves were also part of their hiking ensemble. You had to be on the lookout for rattlers, especially around the granite boulders where they liked to hide during the heat of the day. The trail was made by rabbits and other wild creatures, but used by the family, especially us kids...my Grand Aunt lived on top of the mountain and a few cousins and we lived in the canyon, so that was how we went up to visit her. It took 3/4 of an hour to climb to the top. (It would take me a day to do it now!) It was a narrow little trail, that sometimes zigzagged a lot, but we never stepped off of it or took a shortcut. That was against the The Family Rules. ---------------------------- I got sidetracked....sorry. The Common Camas is sure a beautiful flower! My goodness! Not so common looking though is it? The Death Camas - I remember those! Oh, and those Columbines! What a beautiful orangey color! They are their best in the wild, aren't they? Look how tall and lush. That little wild rose looks much like the one in my meadow, except it is pink. These here are thornless - has a few tiny prickles, but not anything that hurts to touch or grab you when you walk by them. Sweet little rose in every way. I so enjoyed your trek out into the wilds. Do you ever go out to pick the wild blackberries in July-August? Those in the piney forests taste so good to me. Of course, you do have to watch out for the bears who also happen to like them. But we never had any trouble with them. Those are the biggest, juiciest, most delectable blackberries. Just wondering if they grow there. Surely they do. Thanks Annette. ~Annie

Cheeky, I would suggest contacting whoever manages the cemetery and getting directions to the grave. If it's a large cemetery you might be able to contact them via their website. Or if the cemetery has a telephone listing, you could use that. Others may chime in with good tips for you. My country cemeteries are often managed by volunteers, and I get those names and phone numbers by calling local funeral homes. The funeral directors have a lot of knowledge about the cemeteries, which I guess figures. Often graves are grouped more or less chronologically, with those buried in the same decade close to each other. My earlier family plot is at Woodlawn, which is enormous: 400 acres! I'm not likely to wander around there without a map.

Well, I've been taking photos, but can't download them on my computer. We thought it was due to the old computer not having a USB 3.0 port, but.... My older son bought me some new computer called a Gigabyte that's a tiny box, and a new monitor. He put a Linux program on it again instead of Windows. I've had like 4 different Linux operating systems in the last couple of yrs. He's always playing around. They are good because you don't have to worry about viruses, but not everything works on them. They don't have the drivers or the support for alot of things... like my new camera. I keep getting error messages that it "failed to mount." or something like that. Sooo... he's going to try and see if there's anything he can find to fix it. Otherwise he said he'll have to put Windows on the computer. The camera downloads fine on my other son's computer and the one at my shop. Both have Windows. I did get these pics downloaded the other day at work. Christmas decoration shots... These were all in basically in just Xmas lights and maybe some light from the TV. No flash. This is our dog KYA. She was about 12ft away on the couch. No flash again, and the viewfinder looked almost pitch black. Hard to focus on a dark object in darkness. Not bad. And here's my favorite cat, Ginger.... the psycho kitty. I'll try to get some outdoor pics tomorrow if it doesn't rain again.

They have been buddies since they were just not much more then babies. We were going to breed them but the" female horse" we were told turned out to be a male too. Never got down that far to look. Charlie was named after the English prince because of his large ears lol. Fun little creatures they are

Wow !! I want to go with you on that stroll :) Lovely Roselee as always. I have been wanting to get Thomas Affleck for a while. Thats Mike Shoupe's right?

Yes, i went back and tried to see where the sack was ;) I wouldn't have noticed it had you not mentioned.

Fawn is doing great. Love the big blue plants for La Marne. Everything just looks so nice, I can well imagine the effort you put in.

The Austin's Lady of Megginch and Thomas Afflect are just beautiful. I love that color.
The yellow with brown center flower looks like a coreopsis.

I think it is C. tinctura (or something like that) maybe.

I looked at native wildflowers and I believe this is the correct name,
Coreopsis tinctoria
commonly called Plains Coreopsis
Roselee, did you find your new roses locally?
I'm going to add those 2 to my want list.

Ruth, I got 'Lady of Megginch' from Coolroses.com. They have a lot of roses on Fortuniana roots. I get as many roses as I can on those roots because they do much better for me in every way. When I belonged to the S. A. Rose Society I found out that the serious exhibitors grew all their roses on Fortuniana, even minis.

'The Fawn' I bought from Burlington Roses, although others might have it. Bring up the variety name of any rose on HelpMeFind and you can find out who sells it.

You're right, Indu. Thomas Affleck was hybridized by Mike Shoup, owner of ARE, from Carefree Beauty x Basey's Blueberry. I think it got the best qualities from both parents.

Shirley, so is yours! I think this year should be called "The Year of Lantana." I've never seen them so beautiful as they are this year.

The roses are beautiful but I find my eye wandering to the decorations. That angel birdbath is gorgeous! I also love the iron work hanging on the brick wall and the blue swirl pots are really pretty. Love the seashells and phlox too!

My goodness, your photos and your garden are just beautiful and are always an inspiration for me. I don't have great success with roses in containers, but your LaMarnes (or are they some other rose?) in the blue pots with the dichondra are really showy and give me hope for container-grown roses in my garden.

Pam, thanks for noticing the decor. I love finding things to use in the garden.

Molly, I wish I could just dig a hole and plant stuff, but rock or caliche is encounted just a few inches down. When I had just a few plants Bob would dig holes with a pick ax and crow bar, but when it got to be so many I resorted to using pots, most of them plastic or something similar. For the roses several very large holes are drilled in the bottom so the roots can go out into what soil there is. The pots keep the growing medium moist and hold the nutrients and they seem to do pretty good planted this way. The blue pots that the La Marnes are planted in are ceramic so just have a small hole, but so far they are doing okay.

Carrie, sitting a spell is my favorite thing to do early mornings and the rare cool evenings. If you lived nearby you could join me :-)

Jim, Central Texas Gardner shoots in the fall. They say the Texas sun is too harsh to film in the summer time. It's just as well as the tropicals will be at their best then. By the way, I'm no longer watching their programs. It would just make me nervous ... LOL! I'm going to pretend it is a garden visit like I'd have from any of you and try to forget it's being filmed. Anyway, the actual garden visit they show on the program is only eight or ten minutes long so it's not that big a deal.
