LOVE Green Grape and Black Cherry! No Sun Gold? I do not agree that Lemon Boy is a stinker--it is a delicious and productive yellow hybrid, good for containers. Cherokee Purple is my favorite tomato--deep dark color and velvety rich flavor, and Brandywine probably would win a best-all-around contest here, although not everyone would rank it first place. I don't grow it, but many say it's a low producer. Virginia Sweets is a beauty, a good tasting bi-color. And I haven't read too many mixed reviews on Kellogg's Breakfast--I think most who grow it really, really like it.

Thanks for the feedback azruss! I am really liking the sound of that Black Cherry... Oh, yes! I am getting Sun Gold again! It is an obvious 'must have', so I didn't mention it. I even have a pot reserved for it. ;-)

So, between the green tomatoes on the list, 'Green Grape', 'Green Zebra', and 'Aunt Ruby's German Green' what is the best?

It seems most of your list are burpee breeds, some are new this year and wont have a reputation yet.

two of my favs. off of your heirloom list are mortgage lifter and brandywine pink. cant go wrong with those two!

I grew Green Zebra in 2007 and Aunt Ruby's German Green last season. Green Zebra was good....but ARGG was great. Big fruits and a lot of them, and for me the taste was sweet and luscious. But thats just me lol.

You mentioned weather in your post. If you live in the Western part of Washington State, getting enough "heat units" to ripen various tomatoes may be a big factor in your decision. I would look through the tomato pages in Territorial Seed's online for comments on various varieties. They have test gardens in the PNW. Nichols is another seed vendor in the PNW. Thompson & Morgan, in the UK, should also be a good guide for cool season tomatoes. Check for the ones they mention as good for growing outdoors. I believe that they were the first big catalog to offer Sun Gold.

Below is a link to a list of tomatoes for cool climates. It may give you a little more guidance. Black Cherry is one of their picks for cool climates. In the Brandywine family, some strains are suited to different climates than others.

I have the opposite problem in summer - high heat. So don't count on me for recommendations for your climate.

-Carolync1, I actually live in Eastern WA. Our summers are fairly hot/dry. Because of that we get the biggest crop of tomatoes in the mid-later half of summer anyway, which is the hottest. Thanks for the link.

I did a Green Zebra last year. Tasty to be sure, but I got very few tomatoes out of it. I'm skipping it this year.
