Prayers for my MIL please

On Monday, my 80 something year old MIL was out for her walk when she stepped on a twig and attempted to move her foot off of the twig by twisting it, which broke her hip. She fell onto the street when the hip broke, resulting in 5 stitches and a nasty bump on her head in addition to the broken hip. She is having surgery to insert or implant a rod to hold her hip this afternoon. Fortunately, all she remembers is stepping on the twig, then waking up in the ambulance. Her name is Maggie and she could use any extra prayers for a safe recovery.

Oh my Pam, she will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Poor thing. I wish it was easier to get older.

My MIL fell in Bealls a while back and broke her nose and her little face was puffy and bruised for a long while

Annie, I'm so glad your FIL's doing better enough to be talking about bringing him home. That alone is a large Blessing at his age. We've learned a lot about handicapped issues in the past 3 years because of me. Our bathroom was the real challenge. We didn't want to put in what looked like a hospital bath for the reasons Lars noted. So, I spent a couple hundred hours searching online for alternatives. We'd been advised from multiple sources not to go the fiberglass handicapped tub/shower over an existing bath route so that was ruled out early in the process. I was able to find handicapped rails, grabbars, etc. in normal finishes, in our case, polished nickel. For the shower, here's what we ended up with... It's called an "easy access" rather than full handicapped. We also had double doors made that opened outwards with safety grabbars inside/out. The glass itself is also thicker than normal for more stability. We also installed a thermostatically controlled shower so I can't scald myself (I have advanced neuropathy so can't feel hot/cold). Everything in the room has been considered for ease of use. The vanity is higher than normal to limit bending. There are no hidden cabinets or closets that are hard to get into or to reach upper shelves, etc. Towels are in baskets under the vanity. Bathing products, extra TP, etc. reside on open easy accessible shelves. The toilet is also higher. Even one medicine cabinet is placed for ease of access to somebody with limited mobility. The stool swivels and I can reach almost everything without having to move. There are glides under the legs so I can move the stool with one finger. There are six hooks (some both inside and outside the shower) to hang clothes and/or towels easily. These pixs were taken before everything was fully put together but it gives a good idea of the finished room. It was a long haul but it's finally finished and is working perfectly. I can tend to all personal hygiene safely and without help. There's room to turn a walker around, if necessary, without the stool. Anyway, there are lots of options if you look around. /tricia

I have been keeping him in my prayers and will continue to do so, Marie. FYI, any artificial part in your body, ie, knee or hip replacement, ect. has the same problem. Those I personally know who have had hip or knee replacements even have to be on antibiotics for a week before any dental work, even a cleaning, because if they get an infection from it, it will go directly to the replaced joint. So sorry to hear this, Tami. We were living in Pittsburgh and DFIL was in N.C. and driving back and forth for health issues was tough. It's so difficult when we live so far from our parents. Good thoughts and prayers coming your way. Hugs, too.

Need prayers for my mil and fil,both injured and need meal ideas

Thanks for the ideas. One of the problems is that they live in a rural area and meals on wheels isn't available to them. The home health people are coming on Monday and I thinking that I am going to go over when they are there to make sure that they get all the bases covered. My mil is the kind of person that is always the first to help others but never asks for help herself. I am going to call one of the church members that lives closest and see if they can get a group together to take meals over every other day or so. My FIL is the problem and thinks everything needs to be a hot dinner. Me I could make a pasta salad and we could eat it all week long with sandwiches or grilling out. But that wouldn't be enough for them. So will have to do some thinking. Also FIL's son ( MIL and FIL married when in their 50's ) lives in town and hasn't worked for months and has been taking money from mil and fil and part of me feels that he needs to step up and help. But I want to do what I can to help. With 3 kids under 4 and one more on the way, I have enough on my plate to deal with but will muddle through. I think the most important thing is to be there when home health comes and to make sure that we cover all the bases, physical therepy for both of them, bathing, cleaning, and cooking. Thanks for all your prayers. Maggie came through the surgery well and is resting comfortably right now.

I'm happy to say that she has been moved to a rehab room. Dad is so disappointed that she will be at Harris Methodist for 4-6 weeks. I was really worried that she would come home and stubborn Dad would refuse home health care or something. The docs have just taken that decision out of his hands.

She's in good spirits and told my FIL to 'go play golf, you grumpy old man!'
She would never say that without Demerol! She's feeling better every day and actually walked a bit over the past 2 days.

I am glad to hear she is doing so well. Staying in rehab is tough. They really make you do the therapies. I had days I wanted to slap them.

Pam - prayers for your MIL and the rest of your family; remember you're in His hands!

My grandmother broke her hip at age 88 and had surgery. She got out of the bed the next day and was walking down the hospital hallway before the nurses noticed she was missing! I was freaking out! But she was always a very "strong-willed" woman! She's my "Shero"!! Anyway, she stayed here on earth with us until close to her 95th birthday. I hope I'm half the woman, grandmother, and role model she was to us!!
