Dad in car wreck--prayers appreciated

My dad was in a wreck today; he appears injured but apparently will be okay. He was T-boned by a speeding car, his vehicle was flipped, took crew over an hour to extricate him from the wreckage. I'd appreciate prayers for his total fast recovery, and strength for Mom, who's in a temporary health crisis of her own while trying to take care of him. I don't know the extent of his injuries yet, but so far, he doesn't have enough use of his arms to even go to the restroom himself. Both Dad and Mom have always been so healthy that these new health crises are going to be an adjustment. They're 2000 miles away and I feel totally helpless. TIA for your prayers.

Ohh bo Im soo sorry!! It would be terrible to be so far away, but prayer reaches anywhere, anytime! My prayers are with you and your mom and dad!
Keep us posted how he and your mother are doing!

Sorry I got here late - but it's nice to see Lee posting again, although sadly under a tragic circumstance. Your parents should not be out any money because of this accident - there is clearly someone else at fault, and the attorney should be able to take care of that for you. Your father is lucky that the driver was caught - so many times these accidents are hit and run with no witnesses, and that would have been even more tragic. I think you are good at keeping a positive attitude, as are your parents, and that is always a help. My thoughts remain with your family for a speedy recovery. Lars

I know that I should not hold him at fault, and I don't completely. I know that all the things took time, I just don't understand why he couldn't have just called 911 right then instead of going nextdoor to ask what they thought. And it's not only that he didn't really seem sad hardly at all. My dad had been taking pain killers for many years because he had broken his neck around 1980 and it would still give him pain, he had become addicted to them. A couple of days later we found a whole bottle hidden in my uncles car that were my dads and I know that my dad would not have given them away thats for sure. I can promise that(my dads family has a way of trying to deal with things through alcohol and drugs). And also my dad didn't have one dollar on him and that is unexplanable, my dad always had money on him, always. I don't want to accuse him of stealing from his dead brother, but fact is he is a bum and had been there mooching off my dad for weeks, he had been staying with friends in another town and they had to tell him to leave because he was stealing from them so I wouldn't put it past him. All in all he is my uncle and I love him still and if anything like this did happen I will leave it in gods hands. What I ment when I said that my husband tells me to try not to think about it, was that I will sometimes listen to songs that remind me of him and I will look at his pictures and I will just cry so much, and he tells me that I am making myself more sad by doing that. He has been very wonderful with helping me grieve. We have a 3 year old little girl and she misses her grandpa too very much, she will upset and tell me is sad, I will ask her whats wrong and she will say "I miss pops" thats what she called him. It makes me really sad too when she tells me that. I have always been afraid of those late night calls, I would think about how I would feel if someone close to me died, I never imagened that my dad would go He had always been such a strong man. I think about it still so much almost like it's not real I mean my dad, my dad, he's not just a phone call away anymore or a two hour drive. No, flatbed scanners can't be counted on to accommodate negatives. You need to find one that has settings and physical properties that will allow negative scanning. Scanning negatives requires backlighting. I was recently on the phone with a Canon techie, and he mentioned that my scanner was so great because it takes negatives of different sizes, and it was the only one Canon made that would do that. Unfortunately, it's not being manufactured now. I took a look on Amazon and found this one, which will scan slides, negatives and medium-format panoramic film up to 6 x 22 cm. I usually have the negative holder on my scanner set to an opening of 2x3". If I want to scan a 2x2" negative, I just set it in the opening, leaving blank space around it. The preview will come up as a black rectangle, but if I draw a crop box inside the rectangle, my image will show up. I can then adjust the crop to include what I want before I click Scan. Perhaps the DPReview people can recommend other scanners. I'm also wondering if you could use a light box to "scan" the negatives with your camera. Scanning is basically the same as taking a picture. I've handled some slides this way. Because these slides were damaged (mounted under glass and now stuck to the glass--and even worse in some cases), and because I'm not using a tripod, the results aren't wonderful. But I think I could do a lot better if I put some thought into this and started out with better slides.

I do have a few more issues that I didn't cover (not defending his behavior), but since I am disabled I live in special housing and the total household income cannot be above a certain amount of money. If it goes over that, 'we' have to pay full rent which is twice what we pay right now.....hmmmmm We ('I') am hoping that his 'professional' license will be processed and that the situation will change soon. It won't involve waiting for the 'child support' to be finished. He is waiting for a letter from the medical board and it has been 3-4 months without a response. (I have seen the 'paperwork' and I do know he has followed through and is trying to 'better' the situation). I am on 'watch' to see what happens when the 'tables turn'. I have questions such as: "Is he going to give his 'money' to his children and leave us in the lurch. I did have the 'discussion' about this and he assured me that 'extra money' will be split evenly. I don't trust many, but I am waiting to see what happens and I am getting antsy about this because of this new little problem I am having right now. I do recognize this situation is not fully benefitial for my well-being. I am now definitely holding my ground with his eldest daughter and the whole money issue. If he thinks that I am just going to 'go with the flow', from now on, he will be mistaken. I truly think she is at an age that she can pay for a bit a gas to visit her father. I guess when things 'change' finanically, I will really stick to the plan or else this won't work out for me.

Bo, really sorry to hear about your dad. You keep your chin up and you and all of your family are definitely in my thoughts and prayers. Do you have any siblings that live closer to them?

Thank you all, so so much, for your prayers! You all won't believe this. I just confirmed this with my Mom--he's FINE. After a battery of tests, X-rays, etc., he's just walked out of the hospital with a couple prescriptions for pain meds. There are some things he'll have to be monitored for and he's terribly sore, but otherwise, nothing serious. I'm a little ambivalent about his quick release, but what a blessing! This could've been so much worse.

Thank you for the prayers, and thank God He answered so quickly!

Dad said "Fireman Steve" (apparently they got on a first name basis during the hour-long extrication from the vehicle) had told him, "Congratulations, Tom--you have the first convertible minivan in the county." The van had come to rest on it's driver's side so they cut the roof off, and pulled him out the back of the tailgate area. Don't exactly know why they did that. A gallon-size bottle of BBQ sauce he'd been transporting exploded upon impact, and the EMT's thought he was hemorraging! LOL I told Dad, "Now that's a true Texan who bleeds BBQ sauce!"

Dad heard a policeman at the scene say to another that it was amazing everyone survived. Seems that the other car was flying and never even hit the brakes before slamming into Dad, who was barely moving. For a little sedan to flip a minivan, it really must've been moving.

So, all is well and thank you, again, for your prayers.

How scary for all concerned, but that bbq sauce bit was a bit funny. I'm so glad he's okay. That kind of thing can really shake you up. I'd have trouble using my hands too, they'd be shaking so much.

I'll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Bo, I'm glad your dad came out of the wreck in such good condition. God must've had his hands on him.

This is one tale you can keep telling for generations. True Texans always have BBQ sauce on hand.

Bo, I am just now reading this, and can tell you that I am so glad all is well. You told some interesting stories about him, and I feel as if I know him. God bless all of you, and I, too am glad He answered so quickly. (((Hugs))))

LOL You can take the man outta Texas, but you can't take Texas outta the man!

My sister just sent me the video coverage of the wreck from the local NBC news station there--I'm glad I already knew Dad was okay! They described the wreck, showed the mangled van with the roof cut off, showed my dad on the pavement surrounded by EMT's and then being loaded into the ambulance--so scary!

Turns out the reason he couldn't go to the restroom is because they had him strapped down to a backboard and wouldn't let him up! Knowing my dad, that was worse than the wreck itself. LOL

They thought his neck was broken, and are still suspicious of one little place, but they said even if it is, it's in a place that wouldn't be serious. I wasn't aware that it's possible to have a non-serious broken neck! I guess it's just one of those little tags of bone that come off the side of the vertebrae, but away from the spinal cord. Even so--owww! Poor guy.

Thanks for your concern, everybody. As soon as Dad and Mom retire, they're painting GTT on the door and moving back home to Texas. I'm sure you'll meet them at a plant swap one day!

There Is a GOD!!!..And I KNOW he is ALWAYS so close..I am sooo Happy and Thankful for you Bo and your Mom and Dad!!!
My brother was a "cutter" for trees..and one day he was cutting and another cutter was cutting and the other cutter's tree fell on my brother...
It hit him on the head......and cracked his hardhat...and he passed out...NOONE KNEW....
They found him with blood in his cracked hardhat...and called the ambulance...
The Hospital released him saying a concussion...He had a crack in his skull!!!....BAD RELEASE!!!
3 days later his legs drew up behind him..he could'nt move his legs..he called my mom.....they "carried" him and put him into their car...they took him to a different hospital .. and they showed 2 fractures to his spinal cord...
for 6 weeks my brother had a halo...(skrews drilled into his head and a huge metal halo surrounding it)...he had broke his neck......
He had to lay flat for 6 weeks....OHH HE HATED IT..LOL..but .. then they had to gradually lift him on a board....at different angles..so that he could learn to hold down food again...AND all his internal organs would shift to the proper places again....He got soo skinny...
Anyway.......
What I really wanted to IMPRESS..IS..THERE IS A GREAT GOD!!!
Im Soooo thankful Your Dad is OK!!!!! And ..you CAN have a SPINAL Injury and survive with full abilities...WITH PRAYER!!
Im still keeping you and your family in my prayers!!!
And Thankful that God answers Prayers so Swiftly!!!

Bo, so happy to hear the good news. Hope he has a very speedy recovery and tell your mom that I hope he's a good *patient*! It may end up being harder on her than it is on HIM!!

Dena, wow--your story was scary and awful and wonderful at the same time. Thank God for your brother's complete recovery! I've seen trees smash cars and houses--it's a miracle he lived through it at all, and more because of no lasting injury. Amazing! Parts of his story reminded me of the book, _Joni_, a true story about a young woman who suffered a paralyzing neck injury. It sounds like he was on a Stryker frame, like she was. Bless his heart!

Kristi, apparently you've already met my parents! You just summed it up perfectly. Dad is a terrible patient, and Mom fusses over him constantly! It's hilarious, but so sweet at the same time. :-)

Mom was diagnosed with a rare fatal lung disorder recently, and given a prognosis of death likely within 2-4 years. (My mother is a very youthful, health-conscious, slender, early-sixty-something beauty, though the prednisone treatment since her diagnosis has added a lot of weight.) We've been absolutely covering her with our prayers, praying for an "impossible" healing of this "incurable" disease. Well, the Friday before Mother's Day, we found out that it was a misdiagnosis! Her new team of doctors at UVA discovered that while she does have a rare muscle disease that affects lung tissue, it's a treatable disease with a prognosis of LIFE instead of DEATH. That was a happy Mother's Day, to say the least. We're so blessed!!!

I'm so glad he's OK, and thanks for the laugh! What about the car that hit him? My mom was hit by a speeder and unfortunately it caused extensive damage to her arm, 11 surgeries later she can't move it, the bones are broken and can't be fixed and she wears a splint 24/7 on it. The guy that hit her didn't even get a ticket.
Dena, I'm glad they took care of your brother. A friend of mine was waterskiing, she took a fall, had some neck pain but didn't think anything about it, she's and ER nurse. A couple of weeks later her neck still hurt and she went to the chiropracter, luckily he took x-rays. He came back in the room, pale and shaking, he had already called 911. She had an unstable c-1/c-2 fracture!! She had to have a halo also but eventually was fine. You just never know do you?

Head injuries suck!!! No one wants to believe their neck or head is broken. I don't blame them! Scary,scary,scary!!!
I think if a person loses consciousness for even a second...x-rays are appropriate!PJ
