herb gardening can you plant them together

Hi everyone. I just joined and have a question that is actually for a friend. She wants to grow some herbs like dill, mint and basil just to name a few. Isn't it ok to plant them all together? She thought they would take on the flavors of each other. Everything I read has herbs mixed in with vegetable and flower beds. I thought she had a good point but I didn't know if it was true. thanks

They do not take on the flavors of each other. Plant them together for a nice display. Or plant them, then try to keep them apart when they reseed!

I have heard that growing basil with tomatoes enhances the flavor of the tomato, but that is just what I have heard.

It's not a god idea to plant anything edible with roses in the same bed or close by, because roses need spraying to keep BS at bay. If the spray could cause you or anyone else physical harm, you should not do it. Unfortunately, there are many poeople who feel that if here is any space left over in a rose bed or garden, it should be filled to the gills with something. Not cool. Either you have roses or you have edibles, but not together.

I have sent potted small plants by mail successfully. I used plastic 4 inch pots. First I wrap the pot in Saran wrap to keep the soil from falling out(with the plant). Then I place the pot in a US postal service priority mail box. I perfected a technique by trial and error of using cardboard strips as 'seat belts' to keep the pot from moving. You are doing it right when you can invert the box and the pot will not drop out. This is because the Post Office cannot be relied on to keep the box upright. I sent dozens of plants this way and maybe 5-10% of the shipments did not reach in good condition. Hope this helps.

As your plants grow, use you nose and taste-buds to help ID them. Also, research what they'll look like when mature - Google Images has a lot of herb pix, and the sites they come from have information on their mature size etc. Taller plants at the back, the rest will look good no matter how you arrange them. I rather like a herb garden to look higgledy-piggledy and untamed, which is probably just as well, because it's my experience that herbs will do best where THEY want to be, not where YOU want them. Sage can become a fair-sized shrub, so put it towards the back. It won't get as big as the rosemary, however. I have found it to be rather temperamental. A healthy basil can get quite large, too. I've had them grow to 1.5 metres or so tall, and about the same in width. It's hard to give a mature basil plant a hug, unless you have arms like a spider-monkey! Thyme can spread by layering, but is quite well-behaved - grows to about 20cm tall, but I've seen it taller. It's a short-lived perennial, and in a couple of years the 'mother' will die off, hopefully have layered several babies which can be separated from their mother and replanted. Keep an eye on the oregano if it shows a tendency to take over. Makes a nice ground-cover, though it can get to about 60cm tall. Parsley is a biennial, so it will go to see in its second year. This is not altogether a bad thing, as if you let the seeds fall, you'll get more plants the following year (or so). The seeds will not usually land where you want them! Remember, parsley doesn't like being transplanted (it has a long tap-root), which is why I said that herbs will grow where THEY want to! In short - don't try for a manicured herb garden. In the long-term, those plants will will decide for themselves what they're going to do. By all means, start out with neatness in mind, but I assure you it won't end up that way - which I reckon is a good thing, by and large.

[smiles about the Triffids] FataMorgana that reminds me of 5 years back, the first summer with my husband who had no experience with gardens or yardwork but was very enthusiastic about my organic gardening. In June/July of that year I received a groaning/sobbing phone call at work from my husband that went something like this: "...I'm so sorry hon, I'm sorry, I couldn't do anything about it, they're dead, they're all dead...(choking/gulping sounds now coming over the phone.) I am now in terrible dread thinking that my sheltie dogs got loose and were killed by a car. "I tried to stand them up again but they just fell over, they're dead. There's dead TRIFFIDS in the yard everywhere." Now at the word TRIFFID I snapped out of my grieving for what I thought was a call about my dogs and said "HUH?" Alan continued "there was a terrible storm with wind and hail, I dunno maybe it was even a tornado and now all of your TRIFFIDS are dead." I said "Hmmmm....ah, honey, what is a TRIFFID?" Alan said "I don't know what they are, you know those huge tall flowers you have all around the yard with the big yellow flowers, they look like the TRIFFIDS from that Sci-Fi movie from way back." I'm hooting and laughing now "You mean SUNFLOWERS?" He says "YES!" LOL, TRIFFIDS in MY yard, ie SUNFLOWERS.

Mint is extremely invasive once established, and will try to choke out everything else. I strongly suggest putting the mint in a separate container (never even in the ground). : )

Be careful of that darn mint. Mint types will muddle eachother's flavors so you have to keep them separate. Also, I put my mint in a container and it GREW OUT THE D*MN BOTTOM AND ESTABLISHED IN THE BED!!! AAAKKKK! Thankfully, it's in a small hell strip in front of the garage and not running wild through my beds. PJ

oh, yes. Sorry. I forgot to mention that about the mint.

Oregano can do the same thing. So can Lemon Balm- that's the one I am battling at this time. It started in the herb bed, jumped across to the bean bed, and now is residing very happily where the tomatoes and some squash are growing. Not all the same plant, but they are all relatives. LOL

Anybody remember why you're not supposed to plant dill and fennel together?
Cyndi, your friend may have been thinking about peppers.
I've been told that the hot ones will 'warm up' the sweet.
Heh, heh...what a naughty trick to play on those without an asbestos tongue!

Dill and fennel are so closely related that they can cross pollinate, and their seedlings come up as a hybrid of dill and fennel. The same holds true with the peppers. There's no way that growing a hot pepper next to a mild pepper will produce medium peppers on the current plants, but their seedlings could come up as a mix between the two.

Don't plant your herbs anywhere near an Angel Trumpet...it will make the herbs useless in cooking. The kids take the leaves and make a tea out of them...hallucinations, or get high or something.........I read an article where a lady did this, and it made them all very sick when she used her oregano in a spaghetti sauce.
