Thanks, Michelle! I don't have time to play with it right now, but I think that will help. I was trying something like that before I posted and I emailed it to myself to see if it would work, and it didn't, but is there a difference in emailing it and posting it like there is for pictures? I felt too dumb to try it here since I didn't know what was gonna happen--and we can't modify our posts to make them look less stupid! But now that I actually have another dumb thread going, I'll just try it later when I have a chance!

Now, now. It's not a dumb question at all.

If I understand the question, it depends on what email browser you are using. I use Outlook Express, and it will only show me the links if I have my browser set to display HTML to me. A HTML browser for email like Hotmail would likely show the link, as that code snippet I gave above is HTML.

So, you really can't depend on people's email browsers to all do the same thing.

A lot of email clients will display as clickable anything that starts with http:// but sometimes, if you put it in an href, they'll make it not clickable (exactly the opposite of the way it works on a web page.

If you want to test how it will look in a browser, you can create a file on your hard drive with an extension of htm or html and when you double click it, it should open in a browser window.

Do you have Firefox, Skybird? If you do, there is a marvelous extension called bbcodeXtra. With that extension, all you do is copy the link or pic or whatever, come to the board and with a right click a little menu will open. Pick the htmlxtra for use in GW and easy-peasy it is done.

My primary email is AOL, and when I sent myself the link, it came thru exactly like I typed itÂwith all the >>, etc. (it was active, but obviously didnÂt go anywhere!) But when I post pictures, I need to use a separate link for posting and for email, so I kinda wasnÂt really expecting it to work in the email anyway. Links I get in AOL mail are almost always active, so I must have something set the right way. hehehe CouldnÂt tell you how to change it if my life depended on it!

No, Jali, I donÂt have Foxfire. IÂve heard good things about it, but once I figure them out, things usually work for me with AOL, so IÂve never downloaded it. Once I get my olde brain around this active linking stuff, IÂm sure itÂll be unbelievably easy just like the photo posting was. But itÂs really amazing how hard this stuff can be when you donÂt have a clue what youÂre doing!

P.S. You guys arent' gonna believe this, but I had to make a correction, and I was trying to type it...

One problem with trying to show you here, Skybird, is that if we type EXACTLY what is necessary - it creates a link. I did that a couple of times in that post to Catlady Karen. Then I saw I'd made a mess on "Preview Message" so tried it again and again.

Michelle is demonstrating the technique by substituting one symbol "(" for another "The http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_url.asp webpage is a tutorial but ALL I did was copy the first sentence . . . paste it in a Word document . . . then substitute what I wanted to stick in here as a link every time I want to do it. Trying to remember the symbols & sequence is beyond me and unnecessary as long as I've got that sentence as a reference. That sentence is my crutch.

Creating a file on your hard drive is easy and you probably do it all the time, just not realizing that's what you're doing.

Start notepad (Start/All Programs/Accessories/Notepad OR Start/Run then type notepad in the box that pops up) and type in what you want to test. Then choose file save as and save it as something like test.htm or test.html. Then, when you double click it, it will open in a browser.

For those of you who want to demonstrate how to type in HTML, you need to escape the HTML codes. In order for me to show you how to do that, I need to escape them twice.
