Name That Rose!

mystery pink rose still no ID 5 years later...

It has been a long while since I've posted here - glad to see the forum is still vibrant and fun! Well, the mystery rose I found growing on my 1940's property still has not been ID'd.

Some facts:

shell pink with a slightly darker reverse

carmine in the bud

slight tea/rose/black pepper fragrance in the cooler months

maroon new growth

bush is about 5-6 feet tall 4-5 feet wide

blooms singly and in clusters of 3

blooms about 4 inches across

many blooms nod

about 22 petals

All you lovely people have suggested many roses through the years and I've ordered and compared just about all of them.

This rose is not:

Queen Elizabeth

Radiance

Mrs. E.G. Hill

Betty Uprichard

Mrs. Wakefield-Christie Miller

Lady Alice stanley

September Morn

It might be Lady Mary Fitzwilliam but the blasted squirrels are all 3 buds off my bitty band, so i'll have to protect her and wait for next year.

I'm going to try to post some older pics and an arrangement i just made from this year's last flowers.

I'm no expert but check out La France on HMF. Looks close to me.

HA there are only dozens of roses it could be, however, if the leaves are as bluish grey as it appears in one of your pictures, I would narrow it down to a alba. However that can be hard to say. What is the tone of the fragrance, is it more fruity (with lemon undertones) or damask, rich pure rose fragrance, can you describe it more? You say like a peony , but Ive smelled different peonies fragrances as well. You could scroll through Helpmefind.com , the hieght gives it a partial clue, as its too tall for a # of gallicas, but not all , thats for certain. Its either a alba, gallica or centiflora rose IMO. Its very hard to tell, I grow a couple of found roses, one I nailed down, the other is still up in the air. Even without a name, I would grab some of the suckers and grow it. Silverkelt

The fourth unidentified one -- the small red with about 10 petals appears to be Dr. Huey, which is a rootstock sucker, and should be gotten rid of. Yank it out (don't cut it off, that only encourages it). If it is attached to or near a different rose that is still growing, and if you continue to let it grow, it will eventually kill the other rose by stealing all the energy away from the plant grafted to those roots. If there's nothing living in that general vicinity, I would still get rid of it -- it's a disease prone once-a-year bloomer that is not worth the effort to care for it. As for the others, the red and the pink could be anything -- there are too many red and pink roses out there to even make an educated guess. Dig around some more and see if you can find more tags -- happens all the time that they are somewhere in the dirt nearby. For wild a__ guesses at the others, how about Rio Samba for the yellow-orange and Bride's Dream for the very light pink? Kathy p.s. Oh all right -- I'll take a stab at the other two also -- how's about Mr. Lincoln for the red (intoxicating scent -- is it there?), and Miss All American Beauty for the first of the two pinks. But that last pink bud's gonna hafta open before we can even guess at that one.

Well, as a little update, I think I figured out what my NOT 'Mme Platz' actually is. The blooms opened white, and looked a lot like those on the baby 'Mme Hardy' I got for the cemetery. But the rest of the plant was totally different. I checked alphabetically, and I'm almost certain that what I got is 'Mme Plantier'. And that's a good thing, because I was considering it for the cemetery, anyway, but didn't order it. So one less for me, one more for them. I'm not contacting RVR about a replacement, since the error is something I'd have wanted, anyway. On a related note, the second error from RVR arrived with the tag 'Duchesse de Rohan', but the plant looked a bit odd, being rather stiffly upright and showing China-influenced-but-still-OGR foliage. Then it sent forth flower buds, which began a deep dark purple-tinged red, opening "old rose red". Looking through the alphabetical list again, I think it's 'Duchesse d'Ossuna', which was another I was eyeing but didn't actually order. So, again, since the error turned out in my favor, I'm keeping it, and will re-order the other eventually without mentioning the mix-up. :-) ~Christopher

@User One more question, if you don't mind? Since I originally found this rose as a tiny twig (like 3" tall the first year), can I assume the entire thing is the same rose? The entirety of the root system fit in the palm of my hand at the time.. There are some small buds forming last year's canes, so I am wondering if they will be indicative of the entire bush's potential future blooms? Or are you saying that only the weirdly tall new growth is probably Dr. Huey?

I checked out La france on HMF and some pictures look very close. I always thought La F. had a lot of petals - more than my rose - but I read that it can have only 26. Maybe you have an ID. : ) Thanks. I'll put La F. on my spring order and post back.

Out of the ones you are considering for possible IDs, I grow Radiance, Mrs. Wakefield-Christie Miller, Lady Alice Stanley, and La France. I don't think your rose is any of these ... I think it's the gold tinge to the bottom of the petals of your rose is a good clue. Neither Mrs. WC Miller or Lady Alice have this ... and their petal reverses are distinctly darker than the fronts. Your photos do show a rose with similarities to La France, but that tinge of gold is getting me again.

I can't give you an answer right now, but we may be able to get closer to solving your mystery when my roses start to bloom. You're in Maryland, just a short drive from here ... when summer comes, let's arrange a visit if you'd like to do some comparisons in person.

Its definitely not 'La France' which has much more matte foliage than your rose. 'La France' never displays any hint of peach, it is always a clear, cool pink, and heavily scented. Your rose is much more modern than that.

Connie, thanks for your reply! Yes, I agree, the slight yellow at the base (more apparent in cooler months)eliminated the roses on your list when I compared the plants.

Thank you for the info on La France, trospero. I haven't grown this rose, but was going to order it in the spring for comparison.

I'm still leaning toward Mrs. Wakefield Christie Miller, which is now under 4 feet of snow. I hope I didn't lose her and am able to keep the squirrels away from her buds long enough to see a bloom! : )

Of course, I keep dreaming that my rose is the long lost HT My Maryland (1908) which she closely resembles in a watercolor in the book The Old Rose Adventurer by Brent Dickerson...

The written description, especially the darker reverse, reminded me of Duet, the photo looks a bit like Peggy Lee. I can dig up a Peggy lee photo...
