Palm Springs (Very Off Topic but I Promised KG :-)

I apologize to anyone offended by the lack of roses in this thread but I promised Serena I would share some pictures I took at the resort in Palm Springs last week. Please forgive the intrusion ;-)

Oh My Goodness!! How lovely is that.....all the flowers and the pond with the fountain is so gorgeous. Was this a vacation for you? I used to live in Southern California and I loved to visit Palm Springs....really nice place.

A number of years ago I was hired by the owners of a large estate to be the Estate/Property Manager. They took a big risk in hiring me because the estate included various formal and informal gardens and not only were they a total overgrown mess, but I didn't really know a lot about gardening. I soon found tons of information from various sources, including the internet, local cooperative extension office, nursery people, magazines (big Garden Gate fan here), books, etc. I gobbled up as much information as I could as quickly as I could and pretty soon my staff and I had that place looking pretty darn swell. ***** CATALOGS ***** One of my favorite ways to learn about gardening has been studying catalogs from reputable online/mail order companies. I find it to be a lot of fun. I started off by ordering catalogs and now I simply study the online catalogs for reputable companies including those that are rated in "The Watchdog 30" by www.GardenWatchDog.com and others that I read about on this forum. It's amazing how informative catalogs can be, especially when they're written by people who truly enjoy sharing their passion for gardening and their knowledge of plants in an honest and friendly way. And that's why I also enjoy this forum so much. So, I highly recommend throwing forums and catalogs into your mix of learning opportunities. Best of luck in your gardening endeavors!

Bluegirl, that's a good point about adjusting to whatever your experience says is normal - like traffic noises or train sounds if you live near their passages, or heat in a Nevada summer, or cold in a Minnesota winter. It's just what you expect and we build positive associations with it for the pleasant events that happen in that period. As a relative outsider to cicadas, the negative associations have gotten firmly established before any positive ones could set in. Tammy and MG have plenty of their own negative experiences too, and if they start laying eggs in my rose canes we'll definitely move them into my mental "bad bug" category. Of course, I'm not big on loud repetitive uncontrollable sounds anyway - having lived in landlocked places all my life I find the sounds of ocean waves to be slightly disturbing and annoying, though not to the same extent. I'd way rather listen to crickets chirping than a tape of ocean sounds during "deep relaxation" parts of yoga class, but I realize I'm in the minority here. So, Michael, if these chirping sounds are all mating behaviors, does that mean that crickets and grasshoppers are just more, um, horny than other bugs, or is it that they have quicker life cycles and we're hearing new generations of cricket males like perpetual teenagers desperate for a date on Saturday night? You'd think if the same old thing didn't get results last night, they'd give up or try something new, but I guess that doesn't apply to teenagers either... Cynthia

And so, Sandi, like SJN said, the scarab beetles went running up your legs and you went screaming, "Take me to Jerusalem!" Fortunately for you, the beetles were flying beetles, and they en masse lifted you off the groundtoward Jerusalem. Alas, however, they were still only on your legs and you were flying upside down. Equally unfortunate, they had not flown with a person before and panicked, all running together for comfort, but the gathering was in your crotch, and you also panicked, in addition to a very uncomfy upside-down flight to Jerusalem. But fortunately as both you and the beetles were screaming, they had the good judgement to settle you and themselves down right next to the wailing wall in Jerusalem, and your collective cries fit in well at the wailing wall. Unfortunately, you did not have a prayer to stick in a crack in the wailing wall, and a group of people gathered around you as you and the beetles became the center of attention, embarrassing both you and them. But fortunately one of the men huddled around you said something in Hebrew, distracting you and the beetles under your pants. Both you and the beetles said, "Huh?" at the same time, and the beetles all ran out your pants legs and hopped up on your knees to look at the young man who was speaking to you. Unfortunately, the young man young man had a beetle phobia and typically handled his anxiety by sucking his left thumb and picking his nose with his right index finger, and he fell on his back with a panic attack as people pointed at him. Fortunately a very handsome young man looked at you and realized that you are drop dead gorgeous and leaned over and lifted you and the beetles and kissed you passionately as the people and the beetles cheered. Your fear of the beetles left you, as you became grateful to them for bringing you here,and you introduced them to the very handsome young man, who was actually a prince. Unfortunately the beetles were hungry from the flight and equally unfortunately whispered in your left ear that they were dung beetles and could they please have lunch. You were so grateful to them that you and the prince,who didn't have any hangups about that sort of thing, took them to lunch at a pile near the roadside. But fortunately you and the prince had a wild torrid love affair and after a week you revealed to him that you always wanted to go to Hawaii. The prince jumped with joy into the air and told you that going to Hawaii had always been his secret dream, but that he had always wanted it to be with a group, and now he had a group with you and the beetles. Unfortunately, as all of you are flying to Oahu there must be food for all to eat on the long trip. Felling kindly toward the beetles, you have carried a sack of sh** for them, which you have suspended from your belt and placed them in it. But fortunately, the prince is not like many men, who would leave you holding the bag, as it were. And beside, he is grateful to the beetles as well, and he lifts the bag from your belt and places it gently and with respect on a pillow across the aisle. You are very grateful that this lovely person respects your sack of sh** that you have been carrying from your past, as he knows that we all have a sack of sh** from our pasts. And the prince loves you just like you are, and you lean back in your comfortable leather seat and looking out at the clouds, with a profound sense of comfort in knowing that you do not need to be any better than you are for the prince to love you and knowing that you will learn to love his sack too, even as the Father of the universe loves us and the sack of sh** we all carry from our past. Merry Christmas and Hanukuh to all. You have brought joy and love to my life. Jim And now I wish that all of the daffodil bulbs that I have been frantically planting do indeed bloom and are gorgeous this spring.

Apparently it is going positive and northeastern canada is going to get cold again. I think a lot of people will be looking forward to that. They have been above average all winter and fall, and not a little above average either! Apparently a cold Feb. ahead for the Northeast but relief for areas that have been below average (I guess NYC was an exception because it looks like it will be staying cold here!!). There is also a chance for more snow here. The snow from the last storm didnt melt yet, and Im sure that there is a good 2 or 3 inches of snow that is still from the blizzard a month ago!! I cant remember snow ever having the snow last almost all winter (with the exception of the 30ft pile of snow at parking lots). It looks like that could be the case though with the snow this winter. I really miss seeing grass, even if it is a little brown this time of the year. I actually saw some a week ago before the last snow storm dumped 6 more inches of snow! So long story short, a lot of snow and cold here, and looks like it will continue like that for most of the winter and all of January. Most of the cold will likely focus over New England and upstate New York, sparing NYC, the rest of the mid atlantic, and the southeast. The plains might get a break, but the coldest days probably havent been seen yet in many areas of the plains if they are right about this next cold blast. The west will be warming up. Not bad considering that the west coast is suppose to be colder than normal during a La Nina year! Good luck! -Alex

Yes, this was a short vacation. The pictures are the front gate/drive and the office/club area at the Oasis Resort, a time share condo type property.

Gorgeous, gorgeous Boxofrox! hurray! And I love the fish fountain, but your lovely fish statuary in your Garden area with the cascading rocks I like EVEN BETTER if I dare say! Your fish is much cuter by a long stretch!

But that is a beautiful resort, so peaceful and FANCY! I just love the arrangements of palms, and bursts of petunias and snapdragons??? or whatever those spiked flowers are! And wow, what is that mass of magenta brilliant pink??? What plant?? Very beautiful! And with mountains in the backdrop too! What a wonderful vacation!

By the way, Boxofrox I wrote in your other thread how much prettier your pink rhododendron turned out than my version. Mine is just pom-pom "cute" but doesn't have that vivid, gorgeous, lacy contrast that yours does. Mine is the same type as your pink one (not your St. Broward's).

Yeah, the stay was very therapeutic. They even had honeysuckles blooming by most of the pools. Twas definitely a pause that refreshed. Whether riding the bicycle or walking through the grounds, the wafting fragrances were divine ;-)

The dark pink/magenta is bougainvillea, it is very prevalent in Ca and Az at this time of year. I think many locals almost consider it an invasive weed but for us out of staters, it is quite an impressive display.

Totally awesome pictures, Boxofrox! It's good to hear that your stay was very therapeuitic. I think your photos have been very therapeuitic for all of us as well. :)

Hehe, well I love that Bougainvillea! It's hard to believe that it's considered invasive. Very beautiful!

Debbie, sigh, I am beginning to think that KG is beginning to be my initials for Killer Girl, when it comes to my roses screaming bloody murder on me! Looking at Boxofrox's gorgeous photos is such delight compared to the disheveled heap my Lumpy Garden is turning into. So if I get all discouraged, all I have to do is come here and bask in his gorgeous garden.

Boxofrox today, I had to email Jim how beserk my backyard roses are getting...I told Jim they are thorny Poodles that came out their "trim". Clumps of massive leafing alternating between sections of bare cane. Sheesh!

Nice pictures. Those bougainvilleas, snapdragons, and petunias sure put on a good show. Palm Springs is one place I would like to visit. Did you happen to take one of the Red Jeep Tours or go up the mountain tram to the restaurant on the top while you were there?

By the time we get to Palm Springs, we usually just want to relax and not go-go-go. This trip was quite short and we had to fly into and out of LAX so we just wanted to chill and enjoy the 88 degree weather. We did find out from talking to some folks at the pool that there was an Easter sunrise service at the top of the tram. If we hadn't gotten in at 12:30 the night before and would have known about that (and packed some really warm clothes), we would have loved to go up. They even had a brunch :-)

Very Pretty, I know where that is. My parents live in Rancho Mirage and all the resorts look so beautiful in the spring. They keep the flowers looking very nice all year round. The entrance to my parents gated condo looks so pretty , last summer in 115 heat the front looked like France with the mix of flowers they had planted. They know how to plant the right plants and keep them looking perfect. Glad to hear you had a good time. The palm desert area is a great place to vacation. Downtown Palm Springs is fun lots of shops and restaurants. I love the town, I am lucky to live 2 1/2 hours away in Az. and visit alot. I always have fun.

I agree, our two favorite getaways are Fountain Hills, Az in February and Palm Springs in April.
