Pluméria in PORTUGAL, need advice

IÂ´m "calling" from PORTUGAL, and right now weÂ´re entering winter. Here we donÂ´t have plumerias, but 2 years ago iÂ´ve been in BALI (Indonesia), and felt in love with the Frangipanis. I brought some seeds to plant, and now I need your EXPERT advices.

Our weather is not the best for my frangipani but iÂ´m doing my best in order to get at least one in my backyard.

Considering the photo below, how long must I wait until first BLOOMÂ (this is my best plumeria) It has 1 year and 1/2; 32cm(about 12Â´Â´);the vase has 7Â´Â´.

When is the right time to plant on the ground?

About the small ones below, about 5Â´Â´ each, do you think its better to take them inside home for winter, or cover them outside?

Hi Ric,
I am John from Athens, we are at the same zone 9.
I think, nobody can tell you when your seedling will bloom, I have seedlings 2 year old and only two of them flowered ths summer.

About the right time to plant in the ground is after abt 3 years in pot, to performance a rooting ball.

I bring mine seedlings in the house for wintering, when the temp going down of 10c (50f), the roots are very sensitive to low temperature and I minimize watering to once per month till to go dormancy, then I stop watering.

Most important than cold is to put your plants under a shelter to protect them from overwatering (from rains),well drainage soil, watering by spraying is better than soil watering,fertilizing with a soluble fertilizer 20-20-20 and much as possible sun.
I use also fron spring to fall fishfert-Seaweed and EM (Effective Microorganisms).

Hi,

I also live in portugal, Carcavelos, and i bought a plumeria in october. My neighbour has his growing in the garden planted in the ground facing east and he wasnt aware that it went dorment at all and its huge... i dont know now what to do with mine. it isnt going dorment and it's still growing, plus there have been a lot of heavy rain. should i force it to go dorment by placing it in the garage or should i leave it outside like my neighbour?

Hi Andy Unffortunately there are no fixed rules to guide us on watering potted figs Fig leaves' attitude are good indicators of the tree water needs through the growing and fruiting seasons.. Once they start bending down as the attached picture shows, they telling us they need some water. The higher the ambient temperature (wind also) and the more new leaves they have, there will be more consumption, eveporation, etc.. and more frequent will have to be the irrigation As for the figs still on the tree, assuming this is its firs year, I would take them off. I know I'm probably a lone voice in the wilderness, but I don't till. I have beds, not raised beds, just beds flat on the ground with lots of mulch and walking paths between them. I make the mulch/growing beds 2x the width I can reach comfortably and work them from both sides. When I have a lot of vegitive material I knock it over into the walking path then use a monster mower to shred it and throw it back onto the mulch bed. for weeds on the walk row, foot traffic keeps most down but I occasionally hula hoe. Catch weeds early and it really goes fast. After each harvest, I add more mulch on top, pull back just enough mulch to get seeds into the soil, and plug seed down into the richest soil around. Just for curiosity, I dug one spot to see the soil horizons, and I have a text book class A soil with 6 inches of coarse mulch, 2 inches of composted mulch, a 2 inch A horizon, 12 inch B horizon and a beautiful deep brown C horizon. And it only takes about a year for the soil to get like that. You might want to use a machine drawn cart of some sort to pull mulch into the garden and produce out. I just use a home made cart similar to a gardenway cart. well, ... sorry I wasn't any help about tillers. Arthur The Date Palm Guy

They are actually very easy in containers. If the outside site is reasonably protected (from wind and excess Winter sun), a healthy tree would probably make it in and around NYC Metro. They will do quite well too with indoor light conditions. A coolish room is better than an overheated NYC apartment if that is the choice. BTW.,, they are also easy and fast from seed. Fresh fruit used to be available in Chinatown in June. My biggest issue with outdoor growth is suburban DEER..., they love the evergreen foliage in the dead of Winter... ., though imagine that is not YET a concern in NYC, LOL. Good luck.

Hi again Mysteryegg -- have you run screaming from your own thread yet? Just a quick question so we can incorporate our various views into helping you find a LR-to-hall color that makes you happy...even though if it's one color it will probably look a little different room to room! can you share some photos/art/clothing that you're drawn to? could be rooms, landscapes, street scenes? can you tell us a bit about why you like what you're sharing? Sometimes that helps provide a great starting point when combined with a room's lighting, geographic location, "permanent" elements like floors or tile etc. Because if you're someone who's drawn to soft misty shades, or bold jewel tones, or earthy forest hues and your room's natural + artificial lighting isn't doing your favs justice...that's where compromise happens. You'll either need to get to a color that works well *enough* for your personality AND place or choose a side.* *see April, I did read your posts ;) Temperament: it may explain that Scandi love of white walls even when the snow's up to their chins.

Hi neosai,
ussually at South Europe and at zone 9 most plumerias goimg to dormany from January, plants known better than us when they go to dormant, so don't be hurry to bring your potted plumeria in your carage.

You can leave it out (is better) till the temperature going down of 45f (abt 7c), is very important to protect your pot from heavy rains (overwatering)is better to put it under a shelter.
