Fig Advice

Hi there,
I have recently purchased a potted fig tree. It is a 'verdino fig'. I have read some things about not watering much (once a month) in winter and also letting it winterize, but I wanted to ask a couple of things that I am not sure about:

1) How much should I be watering it at the moment? The current temperatures here in North Italy are roughly the same asSouth UK I would think. It's not hot but not cold, about 14-17 degrees Celcius at the moment during the daytime. I touched the soil today and it was dry so I watered the tree, but don't want to overdo it as I read about roots rotting if the soil is too damp.

2) It currently has some fairly soft small figs on it, that were there when I bought the tree from a nursery a week ago. Should I leave these on the tree and let them fall naturally or take them off?

Unffortunately there are no fixed rules to guide us on watering potted figs

Fig leaves' attitude are good indicators of the tree water needs through the growing and fruiting seasons..

Once they start bending down as the attached picture shows, they telling us they need some water. The higher the ambient temperature (wind also) and the more new leaves they have, there will be more consumption, eveporation, etc.. and more frequent will have to be the irrigation
As for the figs still on the tree, assuming this is its firs year, I would take them off.

Perlite will dry out fairly quickly on it's own because it is a volcanic glass and is used to make for better air space and drainage.Adding about 40-50% vermiculite,which does absorb moisture,should help.Also putting a plastic baggie over the containers top will increase the humidity,just let it air out every few days. If the cuttings show some green,underneath where the bark is scratched,they are probably still vital. Brady

One fig forum member who lives in the North-East posted somewhere that even though he thinks the striped fig is beautiful and has an excellent flavor, it ripens too late for the north-east and doesn’t develop a good flavor once the weather is cool. There are a number of other figs in the Adriatic Berry fig flavor category that are green to yellow without the pretty stripes. They ripen earlier and have a similar or better sweet raspberry jam flavor. Some people have mentioned they like Adriatic JH, Battaglia Green/ Verte, Conadria, and Stella. In 7b you probably want to keep it protected for the winter season until the roots have had a chance to establish itself. Are you starting it in a pot? If so you can probably keep it outside until the temperatures start to go under 40F and it goes dormant, and then bring it inside somewhere cool where it will stay dormant over winter e.g. unheated garage.

You post - ouiallo Leafs were singular, spear shaped (not lobed), not glossy, fruits are purple with yellowish white flesh. I have doubts it is the common fig that most of us grow and eat. Perhaps a photo will help to identify it. Martin
