Need advice on new engine to use for Troy Bilt tiller
Comments (1)For me, the hands-down winner would be the Honda over the Briggs. As it happens, it's even less expensive to buy. Your tiller is geared down to drive the tines at less than 10 percent of the engine's speed at wide open throttle. That means the torque and hp of the engine are more than ten times greater as far as the tines are concerned. If your old engine did a good job when it was new, then there is no real reason to increase the hp because all you are increasing is the amount of fuel you will burn each time out. If you find those engines too expensive, you might want to consider a Honda clone from places such as Harbour Freight. After all, most people don't even put ten hours per season on their tillers....See MoreBuying a rear tine tiller
Comments (1)I recently purchased a Husqvarna 700 DRT that I am very pleased with so far. I especially like the dual rotating tines feature. I don't have a lot of ground to work as of now, but I am fast approaching 65 with bad knees, bad back and all the rest that goes with too many birthdays. I also gave a good local dealer that I have a lot of confidence in. I will keep you posted as to my progress with the 700. Look forward to hearing from you on your selection. Good Luck!! Comments (4)I'm an admitted Honda zealot, but it's potentially a lot of tiller for the money. I don't know the specs, but you're comparing one machine with a retail price of $800 to another at $2000. How can there be any comparison? Honda's commercial stuff (and I've never owned any) seems to be built a little stronger and a little less "feature rich" than their homeowner stuff, which is, in turn, a big step up from their "big box" stuff. This tiller may be fine. Does it look trashed? Is it dirty, dented, leaking oil, etc.? Or does it look good? Are the air filter and oil clean? Are all the original adjustment knobs and pins still there? Does the engine fire right up, respond readily to the throttle and not smoke? Is the gearshift easy and smooth? Maybe they'd let you rent it for a day and apply the cost of the rental to the purchase....See MoreMantis Tiller/Cultivator
