Favorite places to walk, lets see yours

This is Broyhill Park in nearby Lenoir, NC which was made by the owners of the Broyhill furniture company. It is a Japanese garden full of evergreens, maples, and lots of colorful annuals. The Appalachians start rising up dramatically just past Lenoir, so there are lots of hills and rocks. In the fall there's a sculpture exhibit and music.

There used to be lots of ducks in the pond, around the pond, and walking right on the walk trail quite a bit. People complained about the droppings so they successfully got rid of the ducks by stretching ugly wires every few feet across the pond so they couldn't land. Finally they took the wires down and now the ducks are starting to come back. It is so much prettier and more alive with the ducks back.

These steps lead up to a little gravel path that winds among rhododendrons, ferns, wildflowers, hydrangeas and other shade lovers:

Fall is a nice time to see this park also, with the colored leaves against the grey granite.

Linda, that is perfect scenery. I can see why it's your favorite place to walk. Nice topic this is, by the way.

My favorite place to walk is also a Japanese Garden. It's located in the local Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. However, I don't have any pics to share of it.

I also very much enjoyed my walks this summer at Moody's Gardens on Galveston Island, Texas this summer. Here's a few photos I took on my walks there.

This area made me think of the movie, Jurassic Park. Note the pyramid in the background. It houses a "rain forest":

Note the old River boat in the background, on the bay between Galveston Island & the mainland. Moody's Gardens is on the bay-side of the island, as a garden like this could never be maintained on the windy sea-side:

Lush tropical foliage on every side of this path. Galveston was once the richest city in Texas. But in 1900, the deadliest natural disaster in United States history hit the island. A monster tidal surge hit that year and killed 6,000 people. Today, Galveston is protected by a man-made sea wall.

Down by "The Bluff" Its the lake 15 minutes from my house Lots of boat houses and just people hanging out on their boats. And enjoy stopping by to feed the ducks, swan etc...

Oh, yes, I can imagine myself chilling out in that room any day, any time. I LOVE everything about that house. I could move right in and would not have to change anything, and I cannot say that very often (if ever). I linked the architects website below with more pictures of this house. There's two different things: leashes and collars, so I'll talk about leashes first. I like the leather leash for regular walks, it's the easiest on the hands in my opinion. A flexi leash or just a long line with a clip is useful for walking in big fields or on nature trails when I want to give them a little more room to explore. As far as collars, it largely depends on the dog. One of my dogs is a greyhound, so he needs a martingale (aka limited slip) collar because his neck is fairly wide and his head is narrow, which can make a regular collar slip right off his head. He has great leash manners so I haven't tried any other collars on him. However martingale collars (either all nylon or nylon with a small chain portion) are good for dogs that are mild pullers. They can't be tightened all the way like a choke, so they protect the dog's neck, while at the same time being a reminder to the dog not to pull. My other dog is a bouncy, pulling maniac. ;) I have a variety of tools I use with her, depending on the situation. A regular flat collar for boring occasions, a Halti head collar in very stimulating places (I like these better than the Gentle Leader although they are fairly similar). We also have a prong collar that we use rarely, however it is a tool to teach leash manners also (which I quite prefer to the choke collar btw, especially when comparing how it acts on the dog's neck). For our nature walks on a flexi I use a regular body harness. I'm not a fan of the Easy Walk and similar harnesses for a couple of reasons. One is that they are very easy to slip out of (which my girl has done even with a normal harness, but this would be way too easy for her). Also, because of how they go around the chest/front legs, they put a lot of unnatural pressure on the elbow joints which can cause problems over time. For your dog I would be tempted to try a martingale collar if she just needs little reminders (some folks like the nylon with the small chain section because the dog learns to respond to the sound of the collar tightening). Alternatively, if she needs a bit more work I'd try the Good Dog collar (aka Triple Crown collar) which is a plastic, gentler version of the prong. I hope that helps, sorry it got a little long. :)

Celeste , I am guessing it is the extreme harsh conditions I am growing in. Although according to the "powers that be" that say I am growing in a zone 6a , the soil is what is known as Appin Blue Clay. Any amendments I have added seem to get swallowed up by the clay and I am guessing about 2 feet down is a really nice layer of composted rich earth.......my plants just dont get to access it . Couple that with bitter harsh winds that blow across the farmers fields and over my property here ( very little tree protection) during the winter, frost heaving in the thaws during January and February , extensive droughts that last from ( this year alone) May to October and spring flooding that sits on top of the grounds for weeks at a time , plants need to be made of tough stuff to survive here .

Randy, love your pictures too! I've been trying to convince my DH to move to Texas but he won't budge ... I'd love to move out there!

One of our favorite places to walk is this beach we discovered in Pacifica (about 30 minutes from us), it is one of few beaches where dogs are allowed off leash. The kids really love this place too.

Alanna with Bella this past summer

This second place is very close to our house, it's part of the Hayward Shoreline park, we call it the Grant St park cos it's at the end of Grant Street :o) - the girls love going here and again dogs are allowed off leash, it's gorgeous to walk around sunset, we can see the Golden Gate bridge on a clear day, other views include The San Mateo Bride, The Bay Bridge & the city of San Francisco. Lots of birds and it's really peaceful. I love going here in the morning with Bella - we hardly see anyone.

of course, these pictures were all taken when Bella was still a little puppy! in these pictures we had her sister with us as well for a short while.

Another place is Mavericks Beach in Half Moon Bay - another off leash beach that we can go to ... yep recurring theme of off leash places! If we can't take Bella it's no fun - so we look for places where we can take her too. This is the same Mavericks Beach where they have the world famous Surf competition around February or so ...

Looking forward to seeing everyone's favorite places.

I think your photos of all these places are terrific, this is like traveling without leaving my computer. Thanks for sharing and thanks for starting this Linda.

My backup disc with most of my photos got lost when we moved, I only have a few to offer.
This is CA Hot Springs where we used to live, this spot was up the road about 3 miles from our house.

The grandkids could never come visit without stopping to see Smokey the Bear. Until they were older they actually thought this wooden cutout was real. It was a big deal to wave as they went by and call out to him:) The last summer when we moved they wanted their pic taken with him.

That pic was taken right after they'd been swimming down at CA Hot Springs Resort. Which is a public pay swimming pool & hot tubs fed direct from the hot springs, a deli and gift shop. Earlier years it was a lot more. This next pic is what I make up for my friend who owns it to sell in her shop as postcards.

Favorite spot when all the kids were young and we still go there everytime we visit my parents is Pismo Beach, CA.

Last pic I took with a zoom lens of Red Rock Canyon, NV. it was cold & just started snowing that day as we got to this point.

NY Botanical and Brooklyn Botanical Gardens are 30 minutes in either Direction and I live in Soho my neighborhood is adjacent to Greenwhich Village great walks in every direction. I;m including a link at the end to my photo galleries and my walk arounds should only take several hours!

Wow..these are fabulous pictures...everyone is lucky to have such pretty places to walk or to visit.

I think Broyhill Park is a really pretty walk-park, but it isn't my absolute favorite place to walk. That would be somewhere in the mountains here, or the CA coast, or Yosemite..maybe along the Merced river.

Randy, I love all those lush tropicals in Galveston. Would love to see inside of that pyramid.

Niecey, your pictures are great, I especially like the one of the birds flying. You have a lot of water around where you live, and a good assortment of ducks!

cajunrosegal, those beaches look so inviting and relaxing. Cute petunias!

aprille, your walk places are so beautiful...it looks like you can still go to a rocky beach in CA and have some solitude. I like Half Moon Bay a lot also. Haven't been there in about 24 years. THere's a neat trail down to the beach near the Palace of the Legion of Honor in SF - I used to like to walk there.

lesdus9, your photos are stunning also....nothing man made can compare to that waterfall. Did you live anywhere near Geyserville? I remember visiting there.

Labrea, there must always be stuff to do where you are. I'd like to see those gardens in person, and the city. I love the shots of the people among the purple flowers...what are those? Is that the garden Stephen Scaniello takes care of?

Those are a variety of scilla Spanish Bluebells approximately 40,000 planted in the Bluebell wood in Brooklyn. Stephen Scaniello was at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens Cranford Rose Garden now Anne O'Neill is the Curator.

Hi Linda, where we lived was just a little community about 200 people all spread out, up in the Sequoia National Forest, still about the middle of the state.

Up in the mtns anytime there's a good rain or snow melt you can find a nice waterfall somewhere:) I'm fascinated with the one in OR, Multnomah Falls. I've been there twice now. I have a framed photo in my hall too of it.

You're getting some really excellent photos out of your thread, this was a great idea.

Wow what gorgeous places to walk. And all so different. Thank you all for the beauty. Here's some shots from the desert garden at the Huntington. I love to visit there in the winter--in the summer it is pretty hot!

Wow, Hoovb...those are spectacular cactus garden pics. What an artwork that garden is! I have been there as a kid but don't remember the cacti.

Labrea, I don't want to neglect mentioning that I really like that picture of the lady with fans too. Seeing these pics makes me want to do some travelling. I haven't seen many botanical gardens.

love to live near a park like that. I love the Japanese garden
influence. I think North Carolina is a really beautiful place.

I also love Palos Verdes, California. Which you know well.
The cliffs here, the sunsets, the ocean breezes, the feeling
of being in a dreamy place, even though L.A. is not that far.

Sam, DEvon, and Peachykeen, Those are heavenly places to walk and such great pictures. I've been unable to get on the gallery for the past month.
Devon, I really will have to come back to Palos Verdes someday. I'd like my kids to see it. When I was a kid living in Palos Verdes, we had a favorite place to hike which we called " Tom Sawyer's Canyon". It was very rocky and we named a lot of rocks after stuff in Tom Sawyer. There was a big drainage pipe which we called "Injun Joe's Cave". We'd walk through that, very scared and feeling very brave and daring. ( kind of dumb..I bet there were rats in there but it was so dark). Palos Verdes is full of great places to explore. I keep thinking CA must be too crowded now but when I went back about 14 years ago there were still a lot of wide open spaces.
