Hot Pepper Report from New York (pics)

Jalapeno cross with a red "devil tail" that grows out of the bottom of the pepper while it's still green-

These are supposed to be bhut jolokia, though they don't look like the jolokia I've seen elsewhere. Grown from ebay seed. Any other jolokia growers in Central New York?

Round "cherry" peppers growing on a jalapeno, but I've never grown any cherry peppers-

A day's pick of Cayenne, Thai, jalapeno, Tabasco, & two that came off a habanero plant. These ripen to red after the orange phase.

Casey - Your 3rd photo looks like they could be some variation of Trinidad Scorpion (possibly 7 Pot). See the post by trfanatic for a good photo of Bhut Jolokia. The pointed one in the foreground of the last photo could be Paper Lantern.

Could those cherry shaped Jalapenos be random mutantations? Or do Jalapenos sometimes take that shape if the plant is lacking in favorable conditions (not to imply anything...)?

I had two groups too. The first group of 10 were pruned radically, both tops and roots and put in fresh Pro Mix in the garage. Later I radically pruned some others ( but not the roots)that were inside and they stayed inside. CAP 503 and Rocoto,Giant Red Peru On December 1 it got below freezing in the garage so I brought the garage plants inside and since it stayed very cold decided to just leave them in the back bedroom--temps in the lower 60's but under lights. On December 12th I took these pictures: Rocoto, Giant Red Peru-pruned but had stayed inside -the one in picture above Rocoto,Giant Red Peru 2--from the garage At this point, all of the plants that were pruned but stayed inside are doing well. Of the ten that were in the garage until December six are showing good regrowth, one has just begun, two look like they will eventually produce leaves , and one looks dead ( Trinidad Scorpion-FG) Here is a picture taken today of the Rocoto,Giant Red Peru that above has only the tiniest leaf And CGN 19198 which just put forth a tiny leaf So don't give up on those in the attic don't look so hot.

FlFerrari, I love ur garden! Unfortunetly for me, I live in a row home in Philadelphia. Property in our city is sky high for almost no square footage. I have a 25' X 16' (concrete) yard, and a balcony on my second floor which is about the size of the yard. I have the containers on the balcony. It is basically the roof of my kitchen. I figured it was better to keep them out there and safe from squirrels or racoons. Luckily I have access to all the 55gallon drums I want from work. I cut them down to less than half and used those as pots. I thought it would be more than enough space for them to grow and I drilled about 25, 3/8" holes in the bottoms and lower sides for drainage and ventilation. I have been considering building a raised bed garden for next season. I could use the entire middle of the yard and just have walkways on either side. Just some thoughts I had. Of course I have to clear it all with the boss (wife). Lol. She thinks I'm crazy. Went from 5hrs a night boxing to gardening. Anyway, I've babbled on enough. I'll definetly check out your book when it's available. Thanx for the tips.

In my opinion the peppers aren't to blame. You used too many for your tastes in heat. Since you seem to like the flavor you got in your recipe just cut down on the hot peppers as far as ratio goes. Also if you find to get the right heat you want but lost the flavor by cutting down on the peppers ,as suggested above use other strains or varieties of peppers. Try Jalapenolite,Jalapeno M and if you like the Chinense flavor try any of the Aji Dulce-Trinidad,Tabago,Costa Rican or Venezualian Seasoning Pepper Strains. There are Suave Orange and Red Habaneros developed by the N.M. Chile instatute too. I like some of the Super Hots a whole lot-Mostly the Trinidad Scorpions and 7 Pot varieties ,but I use them in moderation. I'm not a masochist,I like their flavor but don't eat them by themselves. Like with a campfire.I like a nice bed of coals for cooking but a bonfire to keep warm.

Thanks! I'm really getting anxious with the watermelons. Still no stems turning brown. Not sure if the plants will hold up but I noticed more little watermelons starting to form. Since I have no experiance with watermelons, I can't even guess when they will be fully ripe. The bottoms are getting quite yellow so maybe not too much longer. Jay

I guess I'll have to wait until the "jolokia" are all grown until I complain to the seller.

They couldn't all be cross-bred, could they?

I'll be a bit annoyed having spent since February trying to grow bhut jolokia.

These were supposed to be "Bhut Jolokia"....which they aren't.

Im growing hot peppers in southern NY a lil north of the edge of suburbia entering into rural country. My pepper plants are doing well. I wanna try growing some of them Bhut's next year if i research on how to get some seeds. I never tried a Bhut Jolokia.
The peppers that you are growing that look like other varieties could possibly be crossed or maybe the seller just sent ya wrong seeds.
Buy anyway i hope they turn out good for eats.

What was sold you as bhuts are not.

Best way to avoid this problem again is not to buy chile seeds on EBay. Find a reputable chile purveyor and buy seed from him.

Search EBay on this forum, this happens to many, many people. EBay is a lousy source of chile seed.
