What did you learn this summer?

(Summer is not officially over, but it's close.)

Here's some of the things I've learned:

I know bugs a little better.
I can recognize a squash bug, baby squash bugs, and squash bug eggs.

I realize how devastating SVB can be. While I was so busy worrying about aphids and squash bugs, the SVBs destroyed my plants. The pretty red and black moths need to die--lesson learned.

Assassin bugs are scary but useful.

Sunflower blossoms do not live for weeks/months.

Certain varieties of squash are more resistant to bugs.

Just because the OSU fall planting guide says peas and broccoli can be planted in late August, one must use common sense and not plant little seedlings when it's 96 degrees and expect them not to wilt and die.

A steaming compost bin is EXCITING.

Thanks to everyone who has offered advice and insight. I have many more questions coming.
So, what did you learn? Even, you, the really smart, experienced gardeners...
