What I learned on my Summer vacation

Well, our season is officially over. I would like to thank everyone on the forum for all of the very generous information they shared over the past 6 months. I only looked on this forum to begin with because I was frantic over roseslug in the Spring and had no idea what it was.

After I saw the rose gallery and the Austins, it was all over. When the season started, I didn't even know what blackspot was or an ownroot from a root canal. An ownroot is much better than a root canal.

I'm thankful I opened this thread so I could read your appreciative remarks.

And I'm thankful I got outside this afternoon in time to save enough roses for four bouquets before the temps reached 25 degrees. Four rose bouquets on the thanksgiving table--works for me, and I'm thankful I have a sideboard for the turkey which got bumped by the roses! LOL

redsox--I'm also thankful you have started participating so actively on this forum. It's been a pleasure getting to know you.

Sarah, I can't believe I left out #7! The pickerel rush, the water celery, the lizard tail and all the cattails are doing just that! Fortunately I know 2 people with barren ponds who are getting plants asap. Pam, you really think these babies will change color? I've got some much smaller that are showing distinct sarassa and shubunkin colors but these have stayed dark. Are some later bloomers than others? They'd be easier to re-home if they had some bright colors, that's for sure! Catherine, your ambition is my inspiration! I'm getting a tropical lily next year (it'll go in the up-sized lotus tub) and it's all your fault! I keep saying "If SHE can do it..." Vanessa

I guess starting this off with Cheech and Chong, I should have been prepared for that last one! I just want to go on record as saying that I respect all traditions and beliefs that promote peace and brotherhood. In my garden and home you will find Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Taoist, Hopi, Lakota... all sorts of spiritual symbols - all directed toward increasing comity. And the only weed I've been involved with for many years is the kind I need to remove from my hostas!

4. Planting 3 or 4 kinds of morning glories on the arbor look as lovely as you envisioned. But seed collecting - well, that's going to be problem....if you want to keep the seeds from the BLUE plant separate from the seeds from the PINK. And NOW you have to explain to garden visitors why there are little pieces of colored ribbon tied all over the vines.... Hear, hear. I use bread ties which are decidedly more "pokey" compared to ribbon. I'm sick of apologizing for everyone getting snagged. Now I suggest that they bypass the arbor and take the long way around. Which leads me to: 1. Stop ignoring the sizes listed on plant labels and seed packs. If something says it will grow to 10ft, assume that it will and only plant one. Nobody needs 50ft of Morning Glorys to fill an arbor "nicely". 2. When you give extra plants away they then belong to the recipient who can do with them what they want. They are allowed to plant them in unsuitable (and laughable) conditions, slowly kill them in any manner in which they are good at or even launch them into space if that's what they want to do. Until someone creates the RSPCP (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Plants) you cannot take legal action against them and you should just relax. 3. Cut as many bouquets as possible and give them to everyone you know (including the cats). 4. Your garden may not be picture perfect. You might have planted orange, blue and pinks together, caterpillars have eaten off half your flowers and there are yellow leaves and floppy plants everywhere, but you know what? All that mess is much more rewarding than having miles of perfectly green antiseptic grass with perfectly spaced cone shaped shrubs planted around an empty flagpole. This is a great topic btw. :)

I'd like to ditto Redsox's thanks. Everyone here is so knowledgeable and helpful and has been fantastic at enabling me. I've gone from having 2 Duchers to having about 16 roses (11 different varieties) in an area where I thought I'd only ever have 2 roses. Hopefully once my new roses start growing more I'll be able to contribute more too. But thanks everybody!

My many thanks, too!! I only got here in late October and I have learned SOOOO much.

Sleeping, creeping and leaping, Who Knew? So helpful for my patience barometer.

And... the new litany in my head.... chinas, teas and noisettes..chinas teas and noisettes... Lol.

Maybe most of all is permission to live with spots and the info that they may outgrow it. Well, maybe not in Florida, but I can dream.

And let me not forget the simple, low cost, yet elegant, re-bar tripods. I love this list and all the antiquers, too. Thank you!

Thank you Redsox. Every time when one asks a question one has to measure again and again what answer should be given or worth to give. Furthermore, I think, all of us learn form others' answers.

About 99% of the time it is a great pleasure to participate in GW overall and I love everyone's exchanges in the rose forum. As you note, a constant learning experience. Your curiousity and persistence in learning more are wonderful. Every time you or someone here in the forum grows curious about something we all learn.

I enjoy your humor. I can see your little smile often when you post and that's very fun. Thanks for the official button-up of the season:) I don't know about you but I'm very excited to see what next years growing season holds.

I`m sitting here about to burst! Great Thanksgiving with family and friends. Picked up my laptop and saw this thread and just had to join in.
