Winter Squash Harvest Tips

Ok, so my first yokohama squash is getting close to picking time. I can't dent the skin with my nail anymore. Growing up in the north, it was pretty easy to keep squash most of the winter, but down here, weather is going to be warm for some time. How do you guys get your winter squash ready for storage? I read that you can leave em out in the sun for a week or two, off the vine, to harden em up. Give me some pointers if you don't mind!
