Welcome to AZ and to the forum. We sure hope you post often. It sounds like you've gotten the information you need from mangled--great information as usual. Despite swearing I'd never buy queen palms since they don't LOVE it here the way so many other palms do, I did purchase some awhile back and they've done well. Mine at only about 9 feet tall and they get ten gallons of water twice a week, plus palm fertilizer in early spring, late spring, and then mid-summer. That *should* help keep the yellow fronds away but you never know. They are not the easiest palm to keep happy here (the way Mexican and California/Desert and date and pygmy palms are) but they sure are lovely when happy. I would never recommend them to friends who like super low maintenance plants, but I do a lot of things I wouldn't recommend. :) Good luck and keep us posted! Take care, Grant

Is there still green on the new frond, but it looks burned/dried/torched on the tips? If so it sounds like frizzletop. Was all of the previous growth otherwise healthy and deep green? or was it turning yellow? If it's frizzletop you can treat it with manganese and magnesium. I would also apply a well-balanced palm fertilizer as well when you add these. Queen Palms are very "hungry" palms and respond well and pretty quickly to this treatment. If the new growth is brown and dried up...then it sounds like you have the sudden death of Queen Palm disease that has been going around. It seemed to really spread after the hurricanes a few years back. Hope some of this helps! Why not supply a photo of your palm and a few closeups of the new growth???

Queen Palm and Ponytail Palm in Austin?

What part of the RR/Austin area are you moving to? The winter lows are moderated nearest the downtown area and nearby neighborhoods due to a small urban heating effect on calm, cold nights. I can't say I've seen any ponytail palms in the ground in the Austin area. Without winter protection, I doubt they would last too long in the ground; but one could always try. There are a few good sized Queen palms planted near Taco Cabanas at two locations: south of the lakes downtown & some on highway 79 neat Redbud lane. A cold winter could certainly kill them without protection, but if they are near a building facing south and have some added heat, they can do alright at least for a few years. I have one in front of my home for 3.5 years. I planted it as a 7 gallon palm from HD that was perhaps 6 feet to the tallest frond. I've put C9 Christmas lights (w/o a sheet or tarp to trap the heat) on it to protect the trunk and bud from the winter. The coldest it has seen was 17 degrees for a low temp. Some tips were a little brown on the fronds, but it didn't lose those fronds. It is now about 22 feet tall to the topmost frond and the trunk is about 1.5-2 feet in diameter at the base. Drip irrigation and fertilizer help a lot. I have some smaller ones in my backyard on the north side that were planted as 3 gals 2 years ago, they have handled the cold without any protection and are growing at a good rate. Others in my neighborhood have planted Queens in the past few years and they are doing well. They don't cost very much at these small sizes, and seem to grow pretty well, so you might try them as an experiment. These queen palms might be a slightly different variety compared to those from Florida as the Texas varieties seem more robust, but perhaps that is just due to the soil and nutrients available. If you can find them, there are hybrids between the Butia and Queen (and some other combos as well) that should handle the worst of the cold weather better than a Queen and grow faster than a Butia. As other posters mentioned, if you want trunk forming palms, the California and Mexican Fan palms do well, with the California being much hardier to the cold and ice here. The Butia (Jelly) plams do fairly well except in heavy limestone and are cold tolerant. Sabal palms are also very tough. Windmill palms seem to grow well and are pretty cold hardy. Date palms seem to grow well, but a record cold outbreak cold kill almost any palm, with a trunk, as the all time low is below zero. Good luck.

I hear some say they grow fast some say they don't grow that fast until they form a trunk hmmm.... i'm still learning about this one lol. :~ )

If y'all want Queens, mine drop fruit and germinate all over my landscape. I try to keep em pruned, but with 12 on the property, some reaching 35' tall, I have to wait for the tree guys once per year or so. I'll pot some up and ship em for free except cost of shipping, unless there is a trade. Just a thought...what'ya think? It takes about a month to fill a small pot and flush a leaf or two. Mine in front are 35' tall and I grew them from seed in 1993. The side Queens are nearly as tall and were planted from 7gal in 2001. They are carefree except good feeding to keep them lush. Mine are very lush! Greg btw I've got to take a pic of my mature Triangle at fmy front driveway. Its got 8' of clear trunk and is about 30' tall- beautiful!!!! Now, PLEASE PLEASE I'M BEGGING send some rain. Dry for over a week, once in 4 weeks!

Nice Queen topher. Are you going to put it in the ground soon? I have 3 queens. 2 are over 7 ft and another is 6ft. They haven't been growing that fast for me but since it got humid in the 90's and low 70's they have started to push out new spears faster. Plus we're finally getting some rain down here. At their current rate I don't see them adding more than a foot to their overall height by the end of the year. Good luck with yours!

NO i'm going to keep it in the pot i have some experimentals to try this winter so i want to see what happens with them .

These palms are fast fast fast!

I planted this one from a large 3 gallon/small 7 gallon about 3.5 years ago. For size reference, the Sabal on the right of the photo has about 15 ft of trunk.

As further reference to Greg's post about growth rate of these palms, here is the same palm pictured above in June 2005, August 2006, and January 2007. The increase in trunk girth this past year has been outstanding.

P.S. If you are interested in a Mexican Tall coconut, I could send one to you. They wash up on our beaches here in Texas in the Spring and Summer, and sometimes us growers actually get lucky and get them before the tourists pick them up and before other locals chop them open to drink the milk.
