queen palm and pigmy palm

hello,

I am new to Arizona and we recently bought a house with some queen palms and pigmy date palms....

both species are on the same watering line, how often should i water them? and how long for?

Plus, 2 of my queen palms are doing well, but the 3rd and smallest one is not....it looks like the fronds are leaning down, the leaves are a pale green and some are yellow, with some brown/black spots...what could it be? i was reading about manganese...could that be possible? but why only the small one is having that problem?

The smaller one having issues is deficient in Magnesium, buy some mag sulfate and follow the directions on the bag, should be fine if it is not too far gone.

We lost a 20' royal palm that way, and another looks pretty awful as well, we hope it bounces back.

How much water is being applied in 45 minutes? If you only have a one gallon emitter, that's less that a gallon and far to little for your palms. I'm going to assume these were planted from a 24 inch container. You would need at least 4 gallons just to moisten the container soil, plus you want some of the surrounding soil to get wet. Applying a minimum of 8 - 10 gallons should do this. Try adjusting your irrigation timing and/or adding emitters to apply enough water. FYI, these palms are sensitive to cold temperatures too. If frost is predicted in the coming months, be sure to cover with a fabric sheet or blanket - not plastic. The cover should extend all the way to the ground with no gaps. That way it traps warmer air inside.

They can reach 10-12ft after SEVERAL years but this would take a really really long time. The change will likely be so slow you won't even realize it. And when it finally does get too big, they're cheap to replace, especially for a 4ft one. I wouldn't try anything to stunt their growth as you could end up just killing it.

Does anyone have a Photo of a Pigmy Date Palm seedling?

I dont have a pic but the seedling should look like a single blade at first and the leaf should be skinny and dark green with a shine.I have seeds on my tree but they are not ripe so I cant give you a pick of a mature seed either. The seed looks like a date palm seed but smaller maybe 5/16 in length and a 1/8 inch wide (roughly)

Hi The white is a very bad choice lol They easily get over 6 feet the first summer lol. . The standard orange would be much better though there are strains that get over 8 feet but takes a long time. There are dwarf , as well as different colored strains but are difficult to find . A good choice for a pot would be S ,regina "juncea" has unique leaves being tube shaped allows the flowers to display beautifully . good luck gary

Welcome to AZ and to the forum. We sure hope you post often. It sounds like you've gotten the information you need from mangled--great information as usual.

Despite swearing I'd never buy queen palms since they don't LOVE it here the way so many other palms do, I did purchase some awhile back and they've done well. Mine at only about 9 feet tall and they get ten gallons of water twice a week, plus palm fertilizer in early spring, late spring, and then mid-summer. That *should* help keep the yellow fronds away but you never know. They are not the easiest palm to keep happy here (the way Mexican and California/Desert and date and pygmy palms are) but they sure are lovely when happy. I would never recommend them to friends who like super low maintenance plants, but I do a lot of things I wouldn't recommend. :)
