Newbie, how do I repot a very short stalk, branched, long stemmed

I'm a newbie at Plumerias. My 1st attempt was a failure. The stalk rotted. Second chance:

A friend sent me a rooted cutting to pot up and try again. I'm looking forward to it. However, I am unsure as to how to pot it.

The cutting is not straight, but "Y" shaped.

The branches (stems) of the Y are 12" long.

The stalk length, from branching to crown, where there are very fine roots, is very shallow. Only, 1" long.

With such a short trunk, I don't want to pot it so deep, that it might rot; nor too shallow that it falls over.

She suggests I make a mix of 1/2 Cactus Mix and Perlite (I have both, so that won't be a problem).

Fill in a 1 gal. pot, up to about half way, with the mix.

Set the crown, where the fine roots are, on top of this.

Then, gently, put in the rest of the mix, thus:

Cover the very short stalk and the branched stems of the "Y", until they are about 1" above the mix.

Water once, give bottom heat and plenty of light.

After lots of leaves are out, I can water as usual for plumerias.

I thought the crown and stalk would be planted, just up to where the branching begins. But her instructions are to plant the whole thing, as described, deeply.

Is this sufficient? Would you do it differently?

Thanks, Bob
