Japanese andromeda (pieris japonica) leaves falling off

I have a couple of Dorothy Wyckoff Japanese andromeda that were planted about 2 months ago. I first noticed that they weren't growing well, then I noticed recently that they are actually *shrinking.*

There are no obvious signs of disease or damage. No lacebug damage, no fungus that's obvious, no yellowing or browning leaves. BUT, the leaves are falling off, starting with the ones at the end of each branch, and there is no new leaf growth.

They're planted on the northern side of the house, so they get some early morning and late afternoon sun. No obviously sign of wilting or too much/little water.

They're watered deeply around twice a week, and get occasional passing showers from thunderstorms. I have not yet fertilized them.

Planted in amended clay soil. I have dwarf azaleas and chocolate ajuga in the same bed that are doing well.
