Can you help me identify growth on tree?

Hello. My husband and I just purchased a new home. We live in southern New Jersey. The large oak tree in our front yard has a strange growth on the trunk, about six feet from the ground. The growth is bumpy and swirly, like the wood suddenly went crazy and forgot how to grow. It is very large: about three feet top to bottom and at least four feet from side to side. While it seems like the outer surface of this growth is mostly wood/bark, I also see some fungus type growth toward the top. Lateral "mushroom" type things. Any ideas? I've come across "gals" in my reserach, but they seem like they are usually much smaller.

Thanks!
