Sweet cherry (Prunus avium). Found trees can be intentionally planted orchard cultivars, rootstock sprouts or spontaneous seedlings - in my area this species is actually a weed. To find out if this example is a named orchard cultivar you need to show at least several ripe fruits to an orchardist, nurseryperson or other party thought to have the necessary familiarity. Otherwise, if it happens to be one of the same cultivars being sold at a nearby store you may be able to see for yourself that the fruits are the same. However, if your only concern is if the cherries are safe to eat then you have already found out that they are.

That is VERY impressive. Think of it as the wood cells losing track of which way they are supposed to grow. There was likely a wound there and the encapsulation process went a little crazy. Would I be correct it is a structural problem?

We have some of these in our back 40, so I rarely see them, but they make large trees if they survive the wood borers. The flowers have a nice aroma, and the birds like the dark bluish berries that form. In our neighborhood, the old guy who taught me about the trees here on our propertly called it woolly buckthorn or gum tree. It is known by many different nicknames. Oddly, one sprouted near our chicken coop too, likely planted by a bird, and we just saw it off at the ground about once a year. It slowly resprouts and sends out new shoots, but I can't let it grow there because it would block the walk-in door to the coop. Out back where we have left them alone, the slowly form an ever-enlarging thicket over time. They aren't picky about soil (ours are in dense, red clay) and tolerate drought (2011 didn't even kill them). Dawn

Oh for heaven's sake, lighten up!! The two species are very closely related and almost indistinguishable from each other except for sizing. And since there is no way to determine an accurate scale based on the photos, that's a bit of a guess. The sure way to determine between the two is to examine the reverse of the leaves.....L. japonicum has raised venation; L lucidum has sunken venation and fewer veins. And they can also be used interchangeably in the landscape.
