Yellow, wilting hedge - what have I done wrong?

Hello,

I planted seven Elaeagnus ebbingei hedge plants last October/November time in big holes with hedge plant fertiliser / compost mix. From January onwards, they have been wilting and turning yellow. The soil in our area is heavy and clay-like. When we dug one of the plants up again, there was standing water in the hole about 20cm - 30cm down. Is it the excess waterlogging that is killing our plants? Thanks for any advice!
