What is it? Should I be worried? How do I get rid of it?

Is it 'white stuff' or a loss of the green pigment? I can see veins and stomata very clearly, and it looks more like chloroplast death than white stuff growing or being deposited.

Well if it is chloroplast death what causes it and how can I prevent it from happening to my other leaves?

I posted this quote several years ago when a poster named "Slashie" (I think...) had a posting going on JAs. The plants contain a substance called inulin, which cannot be broken down by the human digestive system, which can cause flatulence and, in some cases, gastric pain. Gerard's Herbal, printed in 1621, quotes the English planter John Goodyer on Jerusalem artichokes: "which way soever they be dressed and eaten, they stir and cause a filthy loathsome stinking wind within the body, thereby causing the belly to be pained and tormented, and are a meat more fit for swine than men." Inulin is a carbohydrate which has to be broken down to fructose and then conversted to glucose. From some of the references I have seen (I'm not a medical professional...) this can be beneficial for diabetics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inulin I bought some tubers one year from Gurney's and planted them in a cinderblock box so they couldn't escape and they have created a nice stand in the backyard near the alley. They are like tall, small sunflowers. Rather weedy looking though but I refuse to cut them down. I dug some up once and they spoiled quickly on the counter. Very thin skins. It is said not to boil them as they will become mush but rather to steam or bake them. I've never eaten them. Guess I should try them again.

I'm a bit late to answer, I know, but it might be interesting to note that snails and slugs love artichokes ! I have planted 12 artichokes, far apart one from the other, and they are fighting to survive against the snails and slugs. Ferramol the little buggers don't find it tasty enough. My ripe strawberries they don't give a rat's butt. Obviously the weeds they are fed up with. But the artichokes they are mad of them ! Gourmet meal ! Even the big hard leaves ! So I had to buy grounded coffee, kilos of it, and to make a ring around the artichokes. I sort of mulched around the plant and the circle is about 60 cm in diameter. I wish I had stock in starbuck because me alone have helped their business a lot ! Oh, there's hand picking as well, which I used to do at 6 in the morning, when only the artichokes were planted. Now I have to water the 50 tomatoes and 10 zucchinis and 5 squash (the lattest being a tasty meal for the snails too apparently ! ) so there's no time to pick the buggers before work any more ! Good luck ! Enjoy it that you're not here in the South of France where we have billions of little white snails called "limacon" ! They are so numerous that they stiffle whole big trees in summer when they stuck on them to avoid the hot soil !

Thank you, JOhnmerr and Rhizo 1 for your replies. I have never had this problem before. The grapefruit tree is 8 years old and the lemon tree is 2 years old. Can these "wooly aphids" kill our trees? I will look up how to treat unless you have suggestions. The grapefruit tree is way too big for me to sponge off with water and soap. It's about 15 ft. tall Ants have been very bad herein Texas this year due to the drought last year and the past warm winter then lots of rain in the early part of the year. Geeez...ants have been everywhere. I have been treating them with orange oil and molasses. Should I prune back some of the branch's to allow more airflow or is that not an issue? Thank you again ;)

Larry, according to George that is only a problem when they are cooked. LOL After he said that, he posted later that he now boils them and pours off the water and replaces it and boils again. As for me, I will just eat them raw. I just left mine in the ground last year. They are between the end of a raised bed and the fence and nothing else will grow there, but the JA don't seem to mind. If I were going to order them, I would wait until the weather was warmer. While they do fine underground in cold weather, the cold can hurt them when they aren't in the ground. George was kind enough to send me some when I was doing the seed swap one year, and after spending a very, very, cold day in the mailbox, some kind of turned to mush. I sent out the best but I wasn't sure that any had survived but I planted some of the questionable ones in my garden and they have survived.

potential causes include exposure to excess light and/or excess cold and/or excess heat.

We need a few clues to help you.

What happened just prior to when you saw the white stuff? Were you trying to harden it off?
Where is it growing? indoors; greenhouse, or outdoors?

Is that white on or in the leaf?
If on the leaf is it dusty and will it wipe off easily?

It's been growing outside since I planted it. Recently the temperature where I am has been in the 70s and the mid 50s at night. That doesn't seem like excessive heat and cold to me but could that possibly be the cause?

look like sunburn...

where did it come from...??

did it come from inside a greenhouse.. and you planted it out in blistering sun ???

that said.. its that growth point the matters.. it should flush out.. acclimated to its position ... and if it does.. then just snip these old leaves off ...

the plant is significantly stressed.. i would not now.. spray stuff on the remaining leaves.. for fear of stressing it even more ...

Ken, I did not get them from a greenhouse. A friend of mine had a bunch of small Jerusalem Artichoke tubers from her garden and she gave me some and I planted those tubers in my backyard.

It looks more like an environmental disorder than any kind of disease or insect. Wait and watch.
If it changes, please show us more images.

Is that white on or in the leaf?
If on the leaf is it dusty and will it wipe off easily?

did she have them in shade .. and you put them in sun???

regardless.. unless hers are showing the same problem... then the only diagnosis.. IMHO .. is transplant shock ...

the odds are so astronomical that you move them.. and some disease gratuitously finds these new plants in your garden ... that it has to be cultural.. most likely the transplant ...

again.. life is all in those buds.. so give them time to settle in and start growing... and see if that confirms my suspicion of shock ...

in no way would i ever recommend any kind of cure.. at this time... as there is nothing to cure ... except proper watering to get the roots pumping.. and see if it moves on with its life...

or i am wrong ...
